Swimming Critique

Friday, April 12, 2013

My coach was at the Y this morning to observe my swimming and give me some hints. She said overall my stroke is good, and I was delighted to hear that. My head is in the right position. Mostly she said I need to relax (as if I didn't know that) and to stretch out more. She wanted me not to swim so flat but to swim on each side. She said to breathe bi-laterally if I can, every third stroke in order to get me to do that side swimming. She did say if I was going to do a triathlon I'd need to breathe every stroke because with the nerves of the race I'd need the oxygen. At this point I'm thinking more about competing in the Senior Games swimming events next year rather than doing a triathlon, but I'm not ruling it out. I did realize that I need to make sure I breathe out all the air bubbles when my head is in the water in order to be ready to breathe (thanks, Watermellon). My coach also said, as Joyinky commented, that due to my weight loss I'm having to adjust my stroke to being less buoyant and naturally lower in the water. Also, she said I am going pretty fast. I think she was saying I should slow down if I want to go farther for right now. I can do 200 yards (8 laps) of breaststroke easy. 100 yards (4 laps) of backstroke is no problem. 50 yards of crawl and I need to stop to breathe. Today I didn't want to overdo it since I have a 5K race tomorrow. So I'll practice next Friday if not before.

That is awesome you are doing so well with most of your swimming strokes!! Getting good advice from your fellow Sparkies and coach is priceless! All very interesting information you never really think about in regards to swimming.
Keep up the great work and all the best in the 5K, can't wait to hear how you did!!

Have you done much open water swimming in a big crowd of people? From what I understand, that is the real challenge of triathlon swimming.

I am so happy to have others doing the three sport thing... there's a guy at work toying with the CSG triathlon idea, and I get so exciting virtually living his training for his first, same as I did when you were going after your first HM. I get such a charge out of not just my own achievements but those of my spark friends!

As for the work thing? I always remember that however stressed I feel, my bosses have it just as bad. They are not squeezing the rest of us on purpose... and yet... somewhere up the chain... should there not be accountability for not starting sooner? As in, this law was passed two years ago, why is it no one knows the rules? Not even the feds!

Sigh. How do you build something when they don't draw the blueprints until the night before it's supposed to be finished? Still... if I didn't LOVE the puzzles, I wouldn't be in this line of work.

It sounds like you got some great feedback! I've watched some of the lap swimmers at the Y that are very fluid when they swim. (A few are competitive adult swimmers) They all have one thing in common and that is establishing a fluid rhythm when they breathe and stroke. They don't seem to alter their pace and they are very steady in rhythm. Some breathe on both sides, depending on the stroke, and other breathe only on one side. It was interesting to read your comments and feedback from your coach. Thanks for sharing!

Sweet! I'm going back to training for my swimming as well. I'm looking at Gulf swims one night a week with this Tri group. Even though I have an incredible amount of swim knowledge in the past, I'll probably have to learn a new stroke as I will be training for a Tri. It's great that you are sharing, Marsha, as it is helping me with my education as well. Stay focused and train well!

I also have the problem of not getting rid of all my air while my head is down. Then I have to finish breathing out and breath in the short time that I lift my head. Swimming takes so much concentration!

I appreciate that you have to adjust your swimming techniques to your now less buoyant self. When I was over 300 #s, I couldn't sink even though I wasn't much of a swimmer. Now, I have to work to stay afloat, but at least I can dive deeper.

Active Fun

Thursday, April 11, 2013

Enjoyed the senior dance with my husband this morning. That's our third time attending and I suspect that when we don't have the grandkids we will go. It's fun! Each time we seem to be dancing more, too.

This afternoon I got in my easy training run. I walked 10 minutes, ran 1.1 miles in about to 10 minutes, and walked another 10. Then I weeded for a while outside, too. It was 88 degrees and 48% humidity. For my race on Saturday, 70 degrees is predicted with 90% humidity. The race I'm training for on May 11th at 7pm will probably be closer to the 88 degrees. Just need to be flexible.

Tomorrow morning I have a swimming lesson with my coach. I call her my running coach, but she trains for triathlons, too. She is actually a professional cyclist at this point in her career. Hope she can give me a few pointers on my breathing when I do the crawl.

This eve our local SparkTeam is getting together for dinner. It will be fun, too!! Hope all my SparkFriends are having fun AND success!!

You're swimming has been on my mind a lot. Another factor that probably is making your breathing harder is your fitness! I'd forgotten. When I was obese I could lay in the water and just relax; very bouyant! When I got lean and had more muscle floating wasn't nearly as easy. I had to keep my lungs full to keep my face above water on my back. Where before I could float at the surface effortlessly, now just holding my breath and laying back I'm a few inches under the surface if I don't inflate myself or use my hands. I'm sure you are riding lower in the water as you do the crawl now than when you swam before. Glad you're getting some coaching and having so much fun being active! Stay with it! emoticon

Plans

Tuesday, April 09, 2013

Did my training run at the Y today. That was the first time I ever ran 3 days in a row. I think I'm fine, but glad tomorrow is an easy workout day calling for a short bike ride. Thursday I'll be enjoying the senior dance with hubby and then an easy run. Friday is an optional short swim and I will pick up my race packet for the 5K on Saturday. My niece and nephew are both running it, too. Looking forward to it.

Some of the sodium weight from the African buffet on Saturday is gone, but not all. I'm recording my weight daily here on SP and letting my over goal weight show on my SparkPage. I look forward to getting it back down, though. I'll get there. And I intend to stay there!

Training Run

Monday, April 08, 2013

I ran the lake tonight with my training group. It's 2.84 miles and I did it in 26 minutes and 4 seconds, which is a minute and 10 seconds faster than I did it four weeks ago. I feel pretty good about that!
