What's Cooking? At Goal and Maintaining Team Challenge, Week 2

Monday, January 28, 2013

Here's my week two entry, Crispy Oven Chicken and Oven "Fries":

Here's a SparkRecipe that is very similar to the chicken recipe I used. The actual recipe I used was from the Ready, Set, Go! Weight Watcher cookbook. It is copyrighted and I don't think I should post it:
recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=703376

Here's the SparkRecipe I used for the "fries," although I used no spices as most of my family will say, "What's that strange taste?" since they aren't used to spices on their fries. They do like catsup. I used the long wedge shape option:
recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-detai
l.asp?recipe=35658

I split the difference between the two cooking temperatures and found that worked out just fine. I was really surprised how much everyone liked both recipes. The kids ate it; the picky adults ate it; the people who eat everything raved about the dinner! We will definitely do these recipes again.

Happy, healthy cooking!!

Linda, If you look you can see broccoli behind the featured menus. There was also a tossed salad and fruit for dessert. The chicken (protein) had a little corn flakes on them, not high in carbs. It was, indeed, a healthy meal. -Marsha

Not my version of healthy fare -not a piece of greenery anywhere, carbs and more carbs.. I never had a taste for 'fried' chicken, I like it grilled (cajun blackened) or baked. I feel for you and that bland North American diet so prevelant -my sister had the same problem too when she tried to cook healthy -her family couldn't stand the strange 'spices' -nothing but salt, ketchp, relish and mustard for them lol. Maybe some day spices will take the place of oil and grease for flavorings if we are so lucky.
I do like baked sweet potato 'fries' for a treat once in a while.

Wish I'd Had My Camera

Saturday, January 26, 2013

In 2012 I only had two Weight Watcher weigh-ins below 130 pounds, so at 130.2 today I weighed the least I have since September 2012. The other lower weigh-in was in January 2012. (At home, on the other hand, undressed and unfed, I had many weigh-ins with a middle 2.) So that is just another indication that 2013 is off to a good start. Still would like to stick around 126 at home and 129 at WW. Time will tell if I can do it!

Today I got up at 4 am to meet my running group at 5am. There were 5 of us at the beginning, but one other runner, a mid-50's ex-military woman, and I were going faster and the other 3 told us to go on, so we did. We covered 10.41 miles in 2 hours and 2 minutesat run 2 minutes/walk 1 minute, and that included a warm up and cool down. It was 51 degrees at the beginning of our run and I felt pretty comfortable in shorts and short sleeves throughout, although when I tried to turn my flashlight on and off while running I was aware that my hands were cold. We finished after sunrise around 7am. I would rather run at 6am or even 7 during the winter months, but the people running my pace like earlier, so I'll adapt.

I took along corn cushions, as I've developed a hard corn on my second toe. It didn't bother me as much as I feared it would and I managed without stopping for a cushion. I'm thinking after my 5K this Friday I'll try a corn pad to remove it and see if it works. I'm afraid I'm going to make my toe a whole lot sorer before it gets better. Anyone ever treated a corn? Anyone think it would be smarter to go to a podiatrist than treat it myself?? Any advice you can give is appreciated!

My nephew wanted to walk the lake, so even though I didn't need the exercise today, I walked with him and my niece, his sister, the 2.84 miles plus another .8 to get to the restroom and back to the lake. He's going to run his second 5K on Friday with me. She is leaving to visit her mom (my sister) in Tucson this week. We'll see how he does running without her to pace him. I do plan to race, so I'll undoubtedly be ahead of him, but will root him on to the finish! I'm glad I walked the lake because when I ran it was dark, but walking I appreciated the peace and beauty in the daylight. One day I'll take my camera to the lake.

Hoping everyone is having a super healthy and happy day!

What an impressive run! Well done!!
As I have many foot problems and corns are just one of them, I regularly see a podiatrist and its far easier to get them shaved off then using a slow acting chemical. It also doesn't hurt and you feel better walking on it right away. Corns are a bulidup of skin due to surface irritation. A podiatrist would be able to give you a clue as to why you would be getting them. For me its because I put a lot of weight and pressure on my big toes because the little ones don't pull their own weight since my surgery (they are shorter then normal and are not all straight and making contact with the ground)
Have a super Sunday, keep up the great work!

You have to be real careful with those pads or they can burn your good skin. I know because I done it. After that I had a doctor remove it and then he told me how to avoid it and that it has to do with how you walk on your feet.

Great show, especially with a corn! I had one once and it hobbled me. I treated it myself with an OTC preparation and pad, and the kernel popped out after not too long (a week maybe). It has been decades, so I don't recall how long exactly.

I'd be wanting the podiatrist . . . and to give advice as to whether now or AFTER the race.

Like you I travelled lots as a young woman and had my children later (at age 33 and 36). And like you I've "done lots" . . . or so people tell me! (I myself feel more like I've stumbled along and it's hard to get to be this age without having accomplished something!!). But: I still do see a lot of people who are worried about "missing out" . . . in comparision with what they had before, or what they would like to have right now, or what others have that they don't, or what they hope to have in the future but fear they won't be able to get . . . . .

I am a person who loves the moment: skiing today was absolutely marvellous, best conditions yet this winter and so gloriously sparkly!!

An Accomplishment and A New Experience

Friday, January 25, 2013

Accomplishment:
I finished the 4 week Official Tame Your Sweet Tooth Challenge here on SP and got my trophy. I do feel really good about my 2 weeks of cutting back especially on the artificial sweetener I was overusing, and then two weeks of abstinence from intense sweets, resetting my sweet threshold. I'm delighted that now I detect sweetness in almonds and bananas and things that didn't taste sweet to me before. Black coffee and plain tea taste okay to me now. I'm not sure my cravings have gone away, though. Seems like they've just changed. Now I'm craving salty crackers, but I know the more I resist, the more I'll be able to resist!

New Exercise Experience:
Today when I got to the Y, Gwen and I saw Cyndi water jogging. I had been threatening to join her one day, so I did!! We water jogged 50 minutes together - I think she'd already done 30 minutes or more before I got there. I have read in the Galloway running literature that water jogging is the only cross training you can do that actually improves your running form. So I was glad to have an experienced water jogger show me the ropes. To end my workout I swam 7 twenty five yard laps: 4 breaststroke, 2 backstroke, and 1 freestyle. It all felt great!!

A Touch of Trepidation

Thursday, January 24, 2013

My second personal training session is set for Wednesday the 30th. You may remember that my trainer had a family emergency and missed this second appointment a couple weeks ago. Then, about the time he was available, the dog and I collided and I had a week of a sore knee. Although I didn't cut out cardio, I did cut back, and I quit strength training on my legs for about 10 days. So, now he's back and I'm well and we'll try again.

I had a good strength training session on my own yesterday and awoke with just the right amount of soreness where I knew I had done a good workout, but the soreness wouldn't keep me from doing anything today. I swear my core felt noticeably tighter. I was really up for more strength training today, but I did what I'm suppose to and waited. I know the days in between the strength training sessions are really when your strength improves.

I can't wait for the challenge of my PT session and I'm approaching it with full force. Definitely don't want to postpone it again. I have just a touch of trepidation, though. I'm running my next 5K, the Rotary Twilight 5K, at 7pm on Friday, Feb. 1st, just two days after the PT session. So I'm hoping I'm not too sore to run. Oh, heck, I'll run sore if I have to. We'll see.

You are going to do it! A good trainer will push you hard, but only within your personal limits. Don't do anything that doesn't feel right, just be aware of your weak areas like your back -he probably could help you with strengthening it to prevent future injuries, thats where they really shine, focusing on weak areas to bring you up to a well rounded athlete, able to take on anything :) I envy this new step in your fitness adventure!
