Strengthening

Yesterday my personal trainer gave me a great one hour strength training session for legs and core. This was only my second PT session, and was quite different from the first introductory session in which we sat and talked a lot. I had asked him to give me some tests to see how I rank strength-wise with other people my age.

He had me do step ups with a medicine ball. He said that 46 in a minute was good for someone 55 and over. I did 57. I think the step was about 12 inches or so and the ball was 10 pounds. He had me do body weight squats and right now I can't remember how many I did in a minute (more than 40, I'm pretty sure ) and then in a minute and a half, but he said I was well over the standard for my age. So we didn't find anything that needs remedial work, although the DOMS I'm experiencing is letting me know I'm gaining strength today! Next week when we do upper body I bet we'll find some areas of weakness that we'll address. My lower back hasn't hurt for a month now, so maybe very carefully I can start doing some strengthening for an area I know needs it.

It is exciting to be gaining strength at an age when many aren't able or willing to do it!!

    Wow! You are an inspiration, Marsha! I'm unable to do anything in the way of a "step up" because of my knees. The last time I tried, I ended up having knee surgery. Ah, the joys of aging - except I was only 43 at the time and in very good shape! I hope that you're not too sore!

Water, Water Everywhere! and Other Challenges

Yesterday's SparkCoach challenge was to carry a water bottle with you all day. It didn't specifically state you had to drink it, just carry it. Well, I did it and was surprised that I drank even more water than usual and was really surprised that I enjoyed having it with me. My only problem was that the kids wanted to drink from my bottle rather than theirs, so I had to have 3 bottles and keep washing them, especially since Gwen has a bit of a runny nose.

Yesterday morning I weighed 127.2, tieing my lowest weigh in of 2012, and just 1.2 pounds over what I call my "happy weight". I'm not sure that is what I should call it, because I can be happy at other weights, too. But I do like that feeling I'm beginning to feel, especially in the core, of being tight and lean!

Today's challenge involves thinking about and then writing long term goals. I'm going to have to give that one some thought. Maintaining around 126 may or may not prove to be a good long term weight goal, but I probably need some other life goals. Now that I'm retired I'm not as goal oriented, but it could be a good thing. Hmmm.....

What's Cooking? At Goal and Maintaining Team Challenge, Week 2

Here's my week two entry, Crispy Oven Chicken and Oven "Fries":



Here's a SparkRecipe that is very similar to the chicken recipe I used. The actual recipe I used was from the Ready, Set, Go! Weight Watcher cookbook. It is copyrighted and I don't think I should post it:

Here's the SparkRecipe I used for the "fries," although I used no spices as most of my family will say, "What's that strange taste?" since they aren't used to spices on their fries. They do like catsup. I used the long wedge shape option:

I split the difference between the two cooking temperatures and found that worked out just fine. I was really surprised how much everyone liked both recipes. The kids ate it; the picky adults ate it; the people who eat everything raved about the dinner! We will definitely do these recipes again.

    Linda, If you look you can see broccoli behind the featured menus. There was also a tossed salad and fruit for dessert. The chicken (protein) had a little corn flakes on them, not high in carbs. It was, indeed, a healthy meal. -Marsha

    Not my version of healthy fare -not a piece of greenery anywhere, carbs and more carbs.. I never had a taste for 'fried' chicken, I like it grilled (cajun blackened) or baked. I feel for you and that bland North American diet so prevelant -my sister had the same problem too when she tried to cook healthy -her family couldn't stand the strange 'spices' -nothing but salt, ketchp, relish and mustard for them lol. Maybe some day spices will take the place of oil and grease for flavorings if we are so lucky.
I do like baked sweet potato 'fries' for a treat once in a while.

    I have been enjoying the funnies in the e-mails, but had no idea they had their own separate page -thanks for the link!!
An interesting feature of those cartoons is you can click one to enlarge it, then get a slideshow of cartoons from that particular artist -I clicked on one with a dog and am now happily enjoying a series of doggie funnies emoticon emoticon emoticon
