How Do You Find a Good Doctor?

Monday, December 03, 2012

I got a call from my doctor's office. She is no longer accepting my health insurance. I was encouraged to change insurance providers, but as much trouble as I had getting insurance I think it makes more sense to change doctors. My current doctor is older than I am and she will certainly retire soon anyway. I have Humana HMO coverage. On the web site it shows 48 doctors who accept my insurance within 5 miles of my house. Any suggestions on how to choose a doctor? Thanks for any input you can give me!

I have a great doctor who has an office right down 98 from where you live. He accepts most health plans and takes his time with every patient. Other doctors go to him so you know he's great!

I would have asked at the Dr.'s office if they had a recommendations and then googled them to see if there was any information online. Do you have a preference, male or female? Anyone living within that area that you value their opinion ask who they might recommend. I have one that I really like up by the Mease Countryside hospital if that is anywhere close to you. Send me an e-mail if that would work. I am not sure if he handles Humana or not. I switched to Universal last year and have been very pleased. It is Dr. owned and it is located in St. Petersburg.

I got lucky and kind of "backed in" to my current doctor. He was new to the practice when I needed a doctor, and had the most space... and we clicked! He's young, too... hopefully his practice will always accept the insurance my employer provides (so far they have changed carriers 3 times, and he's accepted them all).

I agree with the others... ask around, and try them out. It's OK to "interview" a doctor, to see if his/her philosophy of health care matches yours! Good luck!

I agree with some of the others-ask friends and neighbors if any of them go to the drs on your list. Also ask other health care workers such as nurses at your local hospital. However, never limit yourself-if you don't like the dr, then you need to move on because I think you need a dr who you can relate to.
My DH had an orthopedic surgeon he had seen previously, but they did not click and he had no confidence in him so we asked our internist for a recommendation and then checked with friends and found 2 who had gone to him and loved him. We also talked to some nurses in other dr's offices and one had had surgery done by him and thought he was fantastic. So, that is who we met with and he did the surgery and we are impressed and would certainly recommend him.

I've checked for reviews on line. We had the perfect doctor in Northern Virginia. We moved down here. I chose a doctor for me, she only had to misdiagnose me once and she was outta here. I finally found a doctor I liked AND he's a runner. D still hasn't made up her mind. Let us know how you did, Marsha. All the best!

hopefully with all your running and good eating your won't really need a doctor for a while.

I've changed insurance 3X over the years to keep my Dr. ! I dread the day that he retires. I agree with what's already been said---talk to people and ask around. There are probably some good ways to research it on the internet too but that doesn't account for "chemistry". My Dr. inspires confidence and respects (actually listens to!) what I have to say. Good luck and don't be afraid to keep trying until you find one you like!

Ask any friends and acquaintances who they like, if you were happy with the Dr. you have, you could even ask her. My family Dr. was always good at finding me the best specialists to go to. In my province we even have an online Dr. rating system where patients write in and say whether they like a Dr. or not, and if not give their complaints, its really handy, but don't know if you would have it in the US or not. You can also look up their board certification and credentials online to see how up to date they are with their continuing education.
But best is a referral from people happy with their service!
Good luck with it! I dread losing my Dr. as I have had her since I was 16, but I know she is leaning towards retirement too.

Celebrating Four Years of Effort

Sunday, December 02, 2012

Four years ago yesterday I rejoined Weight Watchers and started on my current streak of healthy living. Oh, there have been times I have slipped. Oh, yeah. Often I've gone over my calorie range, but what I am celebrating is that I haven't quit trying. Not once. I've exercised, burning at least the number of calories expected, every week except when I had injury. I don't believe there has been even one day I didn't eat 5 servings of freggies, and probably have averaged 10 servings. I rarely don't get enough fiber, calcium, or lean protein. I've done good on water. I certainly value sleep and try to get enough. Eighty pounds are now gone forever. I will never give up again!

Finish Celebrating & the New Pace Group

Saturday, December 01, 2012

Love my new pace group!! I ran 10 miles with them this morning at a pace I really enjoyed, just a little bit challenging. They are also very welcoming and supportive. There were 5 of us in the group this morning, although 3 of them ran 3.7 miles starting at 5am. I joined them at 6am. Most (maybe all of the rest) are training for a full marathon. I'm leaning toward sticking with the half marathon as my distance. I really am doing this for health and fitness and joy. I'm thinking 26.2 is probably just too much for me; I'm thinking that injuries would be much more likely than at 13.1. But time will tell.

Some things about my new pace group: although I'm the oldest by one month, all of us are over 60. All of the rest have been runners for years and years. Not one of them is overweight. But in general I will say as a group, I like runners. No matter their age or shape, runners just make me think, "good people." I have yet to find one who is cranky or negative.

I enjoyed celebrating my half marathon finish at my Weight Watcher's meeting yesterday and then I got lots of congratulations at the Galloway group this morning, too. This was the first time I'd run with the Galloway group since the half marathon because my family spent the week after at the beach. Some people in the group had even seen the 2 pictures I posted on FaceBook (they are in my Spark gallery, too) and gave me very kind comments. So I had a full two weeks of celebrating my half marathon achievement! Milking it for all it is worth!! Guess I'm done basking now. It feels so good. Now on to bigger and better or at least other things....

Bigger and better? Hee-hee! Congrats on your first run with the new group, Marsha. And go ahead and milk it... you earned it!

My own party continued all week as people kept returning to work from their own holidays... and I'd tell the tale all over again.

Lincoln Marathon sign up traditionally has started to open on December 1st, but this year they have decided to start the Full Marathon sign ups on the 8th, then not allow Half Marathon registration until the 21st. Thing is, since they cap the race at 10,000 total runners, and the half has become so popular, they have had trouble with full marathon competitors not being able to get in.

This is a problem because Lincoln is a Boston Qualifier, as well as the qualifier for National Guard's national marathon team. So...

This leads to the pondering... should I spring to sign up for my "home race" as a full for 2013? Or... wait and take my chances there will be a half spot open for me on the 21st?

I'm really leaning toward the full... bucket list, you know? Will I ever be in better shape to give it a shot than this year? I doubt it. The "if not now, when" reaction is setting in. I have a week to think about it. I welcome input!

Nephew Getting Fitter!

Friday, November 30, 2012

My nephew was in the hospital with ketoacidosis due to diabetes just over a month ago. He's 27 years old and didn't even know he was diabetic before the life-threatening incident.

Since he got out of the hospital, he's become a vegan. He is regularly testing his blood sugar and usually has it in the range the doctor recommends. I bought him athletic shoes and workout clothes which are getting good use. We've walked the lake together at least once a week and he's doing it almost every day. Plus he started Crossfit training.

He's also going with me to Weight Watchers usually on Friday mornings. This morning we walked the lake after the meeting. In the past I've had to slow down for him. Today he stayed up with my pace. He had to jog some to stay up with my walking pace, but he was proud he could do it. (I was pushing Gwen in the stroller, too.) He even talked about working toward a 5K, 10K, and half marthon. Could happen!!

His clothes are fitting better and he looks like he has lost weight. People even are commenting. He is eating lots of whole grains, fruits and veggies. But his loss hasn't really shown up on the scale. I've decided that it is fine. He is very motivated to stay out of the hospital and gain fitness. I think he's going to do it!

I've Been Promoted

Wednesday, November 28, 2012

I contacted my Galloway program director and asked how fast a "miracle mile" I need to run to move up a pace group. I told him I'd run a 9:06 mile on the TM on Monday and asked if that would do it, feeling confident I could replicate that time on the ground. My current assignment is based on the 9:44 minute mile I ran in June.

He e-mailed me back and told me not to wait until our next miracle mile challenge. He assigned me to Jan's group based on my HM time. Jan is the great lady I ran with after her New York Marathon was cancelled; she has been running for many, many years. She and two other long time runners about my age ran a 2:32 Space Coast Half Marathon. He pointed out that my 2:37 St Pete Women's Half is close and I should fit right in with that group!!

Oh, wow! I'm going to be running regularly with people I admire so much. This is going to be much more challenging. Can't wait to run on Saturday!
