Feeling Encouraged

Tuesday, October 16, 2012

I just went 3.35 miles on treadmill in 50 minutes. I did about 10 one minute run intervals and a couple two minute run intervals and one three minute interval. I mostly ran at 5.5mph, so I didn't push pace. It felt good; I felt no back pain.

This morning was the first morning since I twisted my back on Thursday that I got out of bed without pain. So I am feeling very positive about the prospect of resuming my half marathon training right where I was.

I have the two longest training runs scheduled for Oct 20 and Nov 3rd. The race is Sunday Nov 18th. I think I'll be ready. Really looking forward to it!

Camera Woes

Monday, October 15, 2012

I had a lot of requests for pictures of my new kitchen. One issue is that I don't have a camera. All the pictures I post are taken by other people. No camera-loving friend is available to shoot my kitchen at the moment.

I've been thinking about getting a camera and perhaps I should. Maybe I should set a goal and reward myself with a new camera.

My hubby used to be the family photographer. Our daughter borrowed his good camera in 1999 for a trip to Europe to celebrate her high school graduation. She lost the camera and was not in a position to replace it. A couple years later, maybe 8 or 10 years ago, I gave my hubby a digital camera. He never learned to use it. It's been a sore subject so I'd just as soon not borrow it and remind him.

Anyway, does anyone have a recommendation for an easy to use camera? My laptop computer is a Dell Inspiron and I would like something compatible. It would also be great if it was easy to print out pictures as my 85 year old mother does not use a computer and wants prints.

(Update on my back: healing, but not 100%. Still hoping to run tomorrow, but won't be surprised if I can't.)

    (digs out digital camera)

A few years ago I bought my first (and so far, only) digital camera, a Kodak EasyShare C190. While there are no doubt better cameras available, this one was cheap enough and easy enough to use. The only annoyance was that I was supposed to use a terrible piece of software to get the pictures from the camera to the computer. I solved that by pulling the memory card and putting it in a USB holder so Explorer would read it.

Fast forward, and I got a Win7 laptop in 2011. Turns out Win7 recognizes the camera with a direct USB cable connection, so I don't have to pull the memory card any more. But . . . that pales in comparison to my iPod touch (4th Gen), where not only can I send the pictures over USB, but I can send them to DropBox without even being cabled. Then I can read DropBox from either of my computers.

The down side to the iPod is that it isn't a very good camera. But the iPhone I have on order is supposed to have a good camera. It will also have the benefit of usually being with me, so I don't repeatedly walk past the gorgeous autumn trees and think, I ought to have a camera with me . . .

There is a learning curve. In my opinion, the two important things to look for are how good a camera it is in the first place (i.e., picture quality) and how easy it is to get the pictures from the camera to where you need them. I wouldn't be surprised if a little research gets you a better solution than I've found.

My first digital was (is) a Nikon Coolpix. I can take decent pictures with it, put the memory card in my computer and transfer the pics to the computer. From there, uploading them onto SP is a breeze. The Nikon only cost something like $150 (a few years back), so you can get a serviceable camera for not a hunk of money.

I'm starting to look at a slightly larger digital with a greater zoom capability, but haven't settled on one yet.

Good luck with deciding on what to do for yourself. Also, wishing you the best with the back problem.

ONEKIDSMOM 10/15/2012 10:53PM

I see a lot of others have suggested use of cell phone cameras. That is a whole learning curve of its own if you don't already own a Smart Phone, but my son has taken some great shots with his. I am only just starting to learn this kind of interface with a tablet PC that uses the same kind of operating system.

However, I do have this caveat about touch screen controls... I just reported my own comment as "inappropriate" because the links are so close together to "edit" or "report inappropriate comment". AARGH! emoticon

Some people can take pictures with their cell phones and load them directly to the computer. (I'm not one of those people.) You could just buy a disposable camera and have a disk made that you can load on your computer. That way you are only out 12-16 dollars until you decide if you want to purchase one.

I love my cannon powershot Marsha! If you haven't seen my robin blogs; they are a good example of the great pictures you can get with a simple point and shoot with a zoom lens. All my Sugar and Xena pictures too. Mine was a gift but they are reasonably priced. Have fun!

I agree with the other canon powershot person that answered. I had one but went up to a Nikon d50 and dh used the canon now and LOVES it...very easy for him to use...go to Walmart and talk to them in the camera department and they can usually tell you all about them...but the canon software is extremely easy to use! Good luck and can't wait to see the kitchen! Also so glad your back is doing better!

I love my Fuji but it is bigger and bulkier and I also have a smaller digital camera but would not recommend it so won't mention the name. It takes ok pics but the one feature I hate is that I have to delete the images individually! Hey after downloading them, I should be able to delete them all at one click and it doesn't! So that is one feature I would check out. I also like a larger viewing area on the back so check that out. Happy camera hunting!

I have a little Canon powershot that I love. Takes great pictures and the software should work fine on just about any computer. And slips right into your pocket. I upload the photos I want to print to Walgreen and can usually pick them up in less than an hour. They even send me an email when the order is ready. I think all my photos on SP other than my profile were taken with my camera. A good deal of quality is lost uploading to SP. The photos usually come out very crisp and bright. Be sure to buy a memory card. :-)

Looking for the Before Picture

Sunday, October 14, 2012

I've been wanting to find a good before picture. I can say I lost over 80 pounds, but a picture can make it more real. Here are a couple pictures I was able to scan today. I don't think any of them are at my top weight, but you can still see quite a difference.

Here is my daughter at about age 10, so that would be around 1991. I was 42 years old and that's my hubby:

Not sure exactly when these other two pictures were taken. I think I was in my 50's in both of them.

Can't remember what we were doing playing around with those glasses, but I sure don't have those double chins any more!!

Eventually I'd like to make one of those pictures with a before and after side by side. Still looking for both a good before and a good now picture.

Great "before" shots, Marsha. You had to go back a ways in time to find them. As I type, I am aware of some family portraits across the room... from when my son was a toddler. Yes, I was a lot younger, but the rolls of fat and double chins appeared below the smiles. Did we live parallel lives?

I may look more wrinkled now, but the smiles are every bit as real, too... it's a lot more comfortable being fit than being fat... and those of us in maintenance can attest to that! Now... to keep it this way... for a healthy rest of our lives!

Kitchen Update

Sunday, October 14, 2012

Well, it's been two full months since we started renovating our kitchen, hiring a neighbor to do most of the work. It is about 95% completed and almost paid for. The neighbor is just being extremely slow about finishing the last couple items. I really like the new dishwasher and the new stove. The cabinets are a much lighter color and the overall affect is lighter and warmer at the same time. Very much like the color scheme. I also like that there is no particle board like we had, all plywood and better quality materials. The matt (not glossy) tile floor is attractive, the new counters are bigger and look good. The back splash tile is my favorite part.

There were several weeks when we didn't have water in the kitchen and it was difficult to cook and clean, but we are weeks past that. So the renovation is not interfering with my maintenance efforts at this point at all. Good.

The new cabinets look great except two cabinets won't stay closed. One hides two garbage cans and I really want that one to stay closed. The corner cabinet has a two-part door concealing a lazy susan. He needs to move the hinge because it impedes the lowest shelf of the turn table. He said it's no problem to fix, but hasn't yet. He is going to install magnets for the two cabinet doors that won't stay closed. He hasn't reinstalled the curtain rods yet either.

The new white porcelain sink is much deeper than the one I had before. I like the size, but had forgotten how porcelain stains and even my bleaching cleanser doesn't leave looking sparkling white. Maybe there is a trick?

Overall, I expect to be pleased with the kitchen when finished. Not sure my hubby and the neighbor will ever speak again after this ordeal though!

Sounds awesome but I understand the waiting frustrations. We hired painters to pressure wash and stain the little cabin and it was supposed to be finished in three days. One day to pressure wash - wait a few days for it to dry - and then two days to paint. We waited 10 days for the pressure washing and it took 6 days for the painting to completed. The six days were spread over three weeks! In all fairness we had lots of rainy days here and they got behind and were trying to appease several customers at once. We have no complaints about the quality of the work-the cabin looks awesome but we are so GLAD it is finished finally! Hopefully, your kitchen will get the final touches soon and you will have that wonderful feeling of completion.

    sounds beautiful.
For cleaning your sink, I read this tip;

Use fresh lemons to whiten small new spots and stains weekly if possible. Lemon is a natural bleaching agent and can fade away small new stains without using harsh chemicals. Cut the lemon in half and rub it directly on the stain. Let the lemon juice sit on the sink for at least ten minutes. Before rinsing see if the stain has faded, if it has rinse, if not let it set for another ten minutes and check again

Showed Up Ready

Saturday, October 13, 2012

This morning I showed up to run. I was there promptly at 6am, with my new Amphipod hand-held strapped water bottle. Last week twice I dropped a bottle from my fuel belt, so I think I've solved that problem. I was dressed in my favorite running skirt. Okay, it's my only running skirt, but it's cute and the matching tank top is flattering, too. I had on my Balega running socks. Last week I bought three pair of cheaper seamless non-cotton socks, but they stretch during a run, and don't hug my feet like I like. Guess I've just been spoiled by the good ones. And talk about good ones, I had on my Moving Comfort Vixen black sports bra and Brooks GTS 12 running shoes. I had along some Gu Chews just in case, but thought we probably weren't going far enough today to try them out.

Yep. I showed up to run. But I was advised by my pace group mates not to run this week. My lower back (strained it Thursday lifting granddaughter) still hurts a bit when I stand up or sit down or twist or pick up something heavy. It's not hurting to walk now. So I walked for a little over an hour while they ran and then we all drank coffee together as usual. Next week we're schedule to go 13 miles, so I want to be ready.

Then my nephew called and wanted to walk, so I walked 2.84 miles more around the lake with him, his sister, and her dog. We are having gorgeous weather with lower humidity, no chance of rain, and at least a few degrees cooler than it has been. I enjoyed the reclining crescent moon at 6am and then the flocks of birds around the lake.

I like my two gym runs a week. Hope my back is ready by Tuesday. We'll see. For a gym run I don't have to get up incredibly early since Gwen can go to the nursery and I don't have to worry with sunscreen when working out indoors. But then my Saturday outdoor runs are extra special because I get a dose of nature. Today's walks were good, but I can't wait to run again!!
