Running and Wellness

Monday, July 30, 2012

Found this poster on my FaceBook "Living, Losing, and Loving It" group. I think it is worth sharing:

Gwen's got the sniffles, so I didn't take her to the Y nursery today. I'm going to get my training run in today after her dad picks her up. That reminds me. For those who've been following my blogs for a while, you may remember it seemed like I just kept a cold last summer. I missed a 5K due to illness and had to miss quite a few training runs. I had a terrible cough that hung on and on. Well, this summer my daughter had a lingering cough, my hubby has had colds, both Gwen and Natalie have gotten over colds, but (fingers crossed and knocking on wood) I have been healthy.

It may be that starting to run last year challenged my immunities and made me vulnerable and now that I'm conditioned it isn't a problem. Or it may just be that last year I was unlucky. Probably won't ever really know, but today I celebrate wellness!!

Love the photo caption! You were very unlucky last year. But yes, you are more vulnerable to getting ill if you have run yourself down. I might add, eating the right things helps too -lots of vit C is thought to help shorten a cold if you do get one. The proper nourishment to keep your body running at top effeciency so your exercise can pay off for you. It all works together. I have no idea why I never get colds, but even when I had unhealthy habits, I still ate lots of fruits and veggies. Proper fuel and fitness hopefully increases your odds of not getting sick! So glad you have avoided it so far!
Thanks for the goodie! Probably wouldn't mind a dietition to let me know the best things to eat to maximize my energy for my condition :)

This has been our tough summer for sickness. Muddling through it and getting to my dance classes whenever our sick household allows. This has been a good week. Run on!

Easy Fun Ride

Sunday, July 29, 2012

This morning I rode early before the group, and then met up with them for a total of 16 miles. Am truly lucky to have a Weight Watcher Activity Adventures group right here in town.

I'm the one in the visor. Yes, I should have my helmet on. Next week I won't forget.

Hope you are having a happy active day!

Having a group to ride with is fun, never knew WW had organized fitness groups! Pretty good going 16 miles with a kid in the pack!
I just did 60 on the elliptical for my morning exercise. Might do more later. Kind of watching the Olympics :), but have to go to the club soon. They are over by 4 pm because of the time zone anyway.
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

My stepgrand just posted this picture to FaceBook today. Here's proof I was in NYC, taken in the theater district, on our way to see Wicked:

Glad I Did It All

Saturday, July 28, 2012

I'm sitting here tired, but feeling good. I ran 4.5 miles with my Galloway group (run 1 minute, walk 1 minute intervals) this morning and then went to the Y. I did 12 strength training exercises, 4 primarily core, 4 upper body and 4 lower body. I felt like my run didn't really challenge me, so I did a fast 35 minutes on the elliptical. Now I know I got in a good workout.

Part of my fatigue may be that I didn't get all my good night's sleep. Nap may be in order. Hubby and I went to a local performance of Chicago. It was funny and sexy and a rather polished performance for our not-so-big town. We didn't get home until almost 11. Now, no regrets. I'm glad I did it all. However, next week I'm going to make sure I have no Friday eve commitments as my 8 mile run starts at 5am instead of 6 on Saturday.

What a great day! I checked with the deep water instructor and she suggested that an easy water workout (not necessarily pumping at 100%) might add something to your training. You had already left by the time she was free enough to talk. Yesterday we did some relay races, strength training and games. It was a lot of fun!

Nothing Profound

Thursday, July 26, 2012

I just read a blogger who states she only blogs when she has something significant to say. It was a great blog. I'm glad she posted it. But I like to post even very mundane events and thoughts.

Why do I want to blog the mundane? Could it be because my successful maintenance depends on dozens of simple mundane choices each day? Do I eat the dibby dab of leftover casserole or pack it up? Do I mix up my nonfat milk powder or grab the fattier milk in the gallon container in the fridge? Do I make sure I have enough calories left after meeting nutritional goals when hubby hands me a Dove chocolate? Do I make sure my workout bag is in the car when I need it? These are the little choices that make a huge difference.

So, I wish I had something incredibly profound to inspire each reader. But since I don't, let me just encourage you to make many smart little choices today.

If writing a blog helps you in any way, even if the topic is mundane, I say do it!!! A blog doesn't have to be profound to touch someone else. You never know when what you've written will strike a chord in another person and inspire them. Many of us are surprised when we read the blogs written by others because we discover that we have similar feelings and/or habits. Keep those blogs coming Marsha!!!

Thank you for this very important perspective. Losing weight and getting healthy was such a profound life change that I forgot it was made up of mundane daily choices. Your example of successful maintenance is very powerful. Please keep sharing.

Seriously, you always inspire me. I didn't read the blog you're referring to but sounds a bit impressed with her written word. Sure, some blogs are more interesting than others but blogging each day helps us all to be accountable and remember why we're on Spark People in the first place. Blog on!!!

SLIMLILA 7/26/2012 9:46PM

And so in the end, it was quite profound after all.. it is the little things as in many areas of our lives that really do add up, isn't it?

Thanks for comments on my blog and for the idea to post the lowest weight for the month..I like that...

I don't know about this dating on-line, I think it may all be fake, how could everyone who writes have their masters? how could all their wives have died in accidents? (unless they were orchestrated by the man whose looking for another victim....) I've asked serveral men if they are real or if the messages are just computer generated, like I am expecting some honest soul to say, "Busted!" and tell the truth...haha!!!

That's life, mostly mundane with some little tidbits of profound throw in to keep it interesting and keep us guessing... and motivated...Lila

remember if we don't get rain in our lives, we won't have rainbows either...

You are so absolutely right and this is so absolutely profound: it is the tiny choice that incrementally make all the difference.

And: it's the smallest things in the world around us that give us the most joy too.

Thanks, SLENDERELLA! You inspire me consistently.

Slenderella, I loved it! You are so cute and funny! This blog made me smile and I needed that. I left a response for u on my blog, didn't realize where I was leaving it until it was too late (had already typed too many words by then). Anyways, keep doing u the way u do u! Keep blogging for sure. Whatever it takes to help u reach your goals! As New-Caz put it,"everyone has a voice" and whether it's profound or mundane, to each his own. I don't think profound is over-rated nor do I think mundane is under-rated. I personally appreciate it all! Enjoy!!!!

Knowing you've made it through inspires me, letting me know that it's all worth it--even though right now it may really stink!!

Profound is overrated. Write what is important
to you, however mundane. You still can inspire
and motivate other SParkers in some small way.
