Reason One SparkPeople Helped Me Through Strength Training

Thursday, May 17, 2012

Today I'm a little sore from my SparkPeople Intermediate Runner's Workout I started almost two weeks ago. Guess I must have gone lower on those walking lunges or deeper on the squats. It's hard to decide if that soreness feels good or not; definitely not too bad.

Before I came to SP I had never stuck consistently with a strength training program. Over and over I tried to do it, inevitably overdoing it and then giving up. This time is different.

One reason for the difference is because SP has taught me to skip at least one day between strength training sessions. Before I'd workout every day and I never saw any progress. I really thought that strength training didn't work -- at least not for me. I first started doing strength training on SP not expecting any results, but just wanting to earn the 10 points. Now I just smile when I look in the mirror and see defined muscle.

Yea you! I used to do the same thing. Sometimes I still did it after reading the SP articles on weight training! Then, in the fall, my physical therapist told me in a nice way to stop before I really injured myself. I'm much more aware now. It just took a good verbal slap up the side of my head for me to listen.

We all need to listen to our bodies. I think as mothers and/0r caretakers we get used to putting ourselves on the back burner. We can't do that especially as our bodies age and injuries occur. You are very smart to pay attention!

It's nice to hear that you are succeeding in something you had doubts about.
I too ST, and circuit train. Three days a week with a day off. But I do cardio on all 5 or 6 days.
People I don't even know at the gym have told me they see the results I have been getting from the work I have been putting in. That's a good feeling. Besides how I feel myself when I know that what I am doing is making my bones stronger and defining my shape in a way that cardio will not do by itself.
Keep it up, stay positive.
Believe you can and you will.

Excellent job sticking with it! I have a hard time getting myself to do strength training because I tend to want to do cardio all the time. Thanks for the inspiration to keep at it:)

Smiling ear to ear too! I can just imagine how good you look! That was one of the first things I learned at Sparks -to strength train only 3 times a week and always a day of rest in between. If ST is done properly, you have worked your muscles to fatigue, causing microscopic tears, which, when given time to heal will grow back stronger..
Rock on Marsha!

Now Everything is Fine Again

Sunday, May 13, 2012

Just when I thought everything was just about back to normal following my son-in-law's car wreck, my husband had to have an emergency appendectomy. I actually was dressed and leaving to go to the gym for my Saturday workout, which is usually my best workout of the week. Saturday is the one day of the week I have no child care duties. Well, hubby didn't look good at all. We looked up his symptoms and we thought it confirmed our original suspicion, appendicitis. Four hours later the ER confirmed it and two hours after that he no longer had an appendix. His recovery has gone well and they sent him home 23 hours after the surgery.

I "slept" in his room at the hospital last eve. I'm looking forward to hitting the bed for a real night's sleep tonight. Kids will be here early, so I'm calling it a night. Very grateful that hubby is okay everything is fine again.

Thanks so much for visiting my blog and for your support and encouragement. I really appreciate it!

My goodness, you have had so much on your plate with family health issues lately. I am so glad that your DH is recovering well from his surgery and the worse of BILs car accident is behind everyone....I haven't gone back to read your blogs but I wish him a full recovery.

Dear, you must be so exhausted. Did last night's rest help restore you? It can be so busy with grandchild care (I'm doing it part time & work part time), even though it is so rewarding. Hang in there, too, this will pass. Maybe today the grandkids will be busy making some home made cards for their grandpa to cheer him up.

Wishing you a great Wednesday! emoticon

So glad your hubby is fine and that the infection was caught in time!! I had mine out once, in spite of having very minor symptoms. I was in tune with my body and knew something was a little off, so after waiting a bit to see if the discomfort would go away it did not so went to the ER. They told me I was very lucky as it had could have burst at any time! They couldn't understand why I wasn't having severe pain or nausea (I refused medication for these)but decided it must be the anti inflammatories I was taking for my RA that masked the symptoms. Lucky indeed..
Sorry your workout day was disrupted, I know I hate missing mine. I am sure you will find a way to get it back..

Everything is Fine

Friday, May 11, 2012

So glad my son-in-law will be okay. Since his car wreck on Wednesday, he can't drive and doesn't have a car to drive anyway. Now he can be alone, but yesterday and the day before he wasn't suppose to, so I got to see a lot of him. I've spent more time at DD's & his house, since he can't bring me the kids. Getting along with one less car for the family may make it harder for me to get to the gym, but thanks to SP I have a great new strength training workout I like and can do at home. Getting in the cardio at home is not a problem. I even have a treadmill here if I need it. So I can give my family the support they need without abandoning my needs and goals. Life is good. Again, we are all grateful that DSIL will be just fine soon.

Always Something to Celebrate in Spark Land!!

Wednesday, May 09, 2012

Just earned level 19 with 80,000+ SparkPoints. At times I have even commented that the points seem kind of pointless, but it is good to have them to give goodies and just to have positive things to celebrate. Thanks, SparkPeople.

Had a great stroller-pushing walk at Banana Lake Park this morning. Gwen and I both enjoyed it and I appreciate that it earned me 7 SparkPoints. Plan to get more cardio this afternoon. Loving the healthy lifestyle and glad to earn acknowlegement through SP.

New Percentage

Tuesday, May 08, 2012

Today, after I answered the 3 SP trivia questions as usual, I read something I have never read before, "you have answered 2409 of 2690 questions correctly, 90% correct". It had been at 89% for probably more than a year.

Admittedly, sometimes I get the same questions. Occasionally I even miss one I've had before and then I don't feel so smart then.

But overall I'm glad I play Trivia. I've learned a few things, even applied some of them, and enjoyed watching that percentage climb!! -Marsha

Well done for reaching the 90% average mark!! I love playing trivia and have seen many questions the same -and even worse have gotten the same question wrong many times! Sometimes, I just can't get it through my thixk head. I have the most trouble remembering numbers. Just doesn't mean anything to me how many people did what in what study so it just doesn't go in the memory banks. Also, I really struggle with strength training questions for what ever reason.. I have done much better lately though and averaged 95% on my last two months. My overall average is 90% right now, something I also just recently made.
Keep up the great work!
