New Experiences

Wednesday, August 31, 2011

Today after my run at the gym I used a foam roller for the first time on my quads, hamstrings, and calves. I had watched a SP video on how to use it to prevent or reduce soreness. I think it helped.

I'm extra excited about my 5K on Saturday as my 25 year old niece is going to run it with me. That will make it extra fun! Wonder if her fiance will come to watch and support. That would be good, too. We'll see.

My family loves the foam roller. Even the boys use it after soccer training. I have definitely found it reduces soreness!

Good for you thinking of a different way to keep you stretched and loosened up after your runs!! I read about them on Sparks and it looked interesting in the video. That is great about your niece, you will have a workout buddy to keep up with and keep motivated! I hope the fiance does come and take photos too, a hint wouldn't hurt!

Unexpected Obstacle and a Kind of Funny

Tuesday, August 30, 2011

This morning we had a shower of sparks coming out of our kitchen light/ceiling fan fixture. I ended up spending the time I intended to use for exercise holding flashlights and tools for hubby. Right now the fixture is not back together -- it is dangling down, but the problem wires are not touchig so it is functioning safely. Hubby has to go buy a part to get it back together, but we were able to fix breakfast.

Little Gwen is napping right now. I go pick up Natalie from her 9am-noon PreKindergarten program in a half hour. Gwen at eleven months is starting to take steps. Yesterday when she tried to step from one piece of furniture to another, she slipped. Natalie yelled, "She did a cartwheel!"It did kind of look like that is what she was attempting. Luckily, there was no damage, and barely a whimper. I predict she'll be walking all over very soon.

DD is working 10am-8pm today which is a very long day for a massage therapist. DSIL will get off between 5 and 6pm and join us for supper, then take the girls home. After that I hope I have enough energy to get in a good walk. We'll see. At least I got my run in yesterday and today is suppose to be a less challenging cross training day.

I'm trying to imagine Gwen about 15 years from now doing a cartwheel! Maybe this is just early practice! LOL

    Hi Marsha
That was interesting about your light. Hope you got it fixed. It is so nice that you are able to watch your grandchildren growing up and seeing Gwen attempting to walk.
Did you get a walk in tonight?

Thanks for sharing.

Yikes! Glad you were able to safely fix your fan! Never like to see sparks coming out of those :(
Maybe you need to invest in a jogging stroller ;) Or perhaps, hubby could mind the girls why you get out for some quick exercise? If they are very active though, you probably kept up your activity levels chasing after them..
But if you are tired, you need to listen to your body and rest. Maybe after the run rest was called for...
Take care of yourself always..

Think I Guessed Right

Monday, August 29, 2011

When I woke up my quads were still sore. They were sore Saturday when I ran the 6 miles and sore all day Sunday. So I wasn't sure if I should run or not today. I would say it really wasn't pain and definitely was in the muscle. So I decided to try a run and see how it felt. It felt pretty good. I went a total of 4.5 miles in 60 minutes. One mile I ran in just about 8.5 minutes (7 miles per hour). One minute I ran at 7.5 miles per hour, an 8 minute mile pace. I first spent 10 minutes warming up slowly, then walked at 4.5mph, then jogged at 5mph, did my speed work, and then had a long cool down. I did the stretches that Coach Nicole here on SP recommends for runners. Right now my quads feel almost back to normal and my hamstrings feel just a tiny bit tight. Think I guessed right about the run. I'm expecting to be ready for my race on Saturday. I sure would like to set a personal record. We'll see.

Social Running

Saturday, August 27, 2011

I was trying to write out my status this afternoon to share my morning experience when I hit something and my status appeared before I was finished. Grandkids were needing me at the time so I decided to just let it be, flawed as it was. But in case you are curious, here is the rest of the story:

This morning at 6am I met up with a group of runners that follow the Galloway method. I ran 6 easy miles with them, doing a 2 minute run and 1 minute walk repeatedly. We were gone about 100 minutes but took a 5 minute water/potty/greet other runners break at the half way point. This was only the second time I tried to run with a group and really only the first time I actually did run with a group for a significant amount of time. I thoroughly enjoyed it. I have heard the entire group is 60 people and 10 of them are women who are around my age or older.

We met at the Starbucks that is open 24 hours per day. For those of you who know Lakeland, it is the one at Lake Miriam shopping center. My group ran north on S. Florida Avenue, turned east and twisted and turned around through residential areas, including one home at the end of a cul de sac where a cooler stocked with water and a stash of pretzels are there for runners at least on Saturday mornings. We ran to the golf course on the corner of Edgewood and Buckingham where we took our break. Many of the people we met are training for half marathons and marathons, so some groups started much earlier and ran many more miles.

At the end of our run, we walked the parking lot for a 15 minute cool down and did a little stretching. Then more than 30 runners sat at the tables outside of Starbucks, enjoyed lively conversation and many sipped various iced and hot drinks. I enjoyed the run. I enjoyed the company. I enjoyed the coffee. I got in a great run and a social hour and was still home in time to start my child care duties at 9am.

This experience of running with a group and making it a social occasion is definitely one I want to repeat -- maybe over and over and over again.

    Hi Marsha
That is great that you found such a group. It can be such a bonus and motivator when you need it.
I haven't looked for any groups but do have a walking partner that walks with me several nights a week. It makes it so much nicer.
Again, I think you will really enjoy the social part of it. Thank you for sharing.

Used to love my runs with a group of ladies (or often just one other lady) from my Y in the mornings, who shared my pace and my reliability about showing up . . . and then the social chat in the locker room after too as we'd get ready for our work days. Miss that! Glad you can enjoy it!!

Not Pulling Together

Thursday, August 25, 2011

Sometimes Kahlua, our just turned year old Shepherd-lab mix, walks on the leash just like she learned in obedience training. And then sometimes she doesn't. There are times I think I did not burn the calories indicated by the time and mileage because it was dog-assisted. And then sometimes I think it ought to count for strength training because I'm the one doing the pulling!

Overall I recognize that she has made progress, even if it has not been consistent. We'll keep at it.

Kahlua, honey, you have to stop pulling on the leash, though.

wild4stars may have something there!! Maybe she is your new interval training coach!!! LOL. A well trained dog is always a bonus, but you do have to work at it and be consistent with it, both you and hubby if he walks her too. Bendix would walk on a leash, but we couldn't get him out of the habit of bolting after anything he saw that he wanted to chase :( I think poor Angus's arms grew longer as a result of all the bolting poor Bendix did LOL.
Good luck with her!

We trained our furbabies to walk beside us without a leash, even with it on, we only have to say beside me to keep them from pulling. Makes life a lot easier-hold a treat she likes to train her to stay by your side and reward every so often until she will walk at your side, with or without a leash.
Always great for a good workout with a pooch!
