Surgery + Patience = A New Start!

Monday, May 03, 2010

On Wed. May 5th I'll be having carpal tunnel surgery on both wrists and a trigger finger release. As the day nears I have some apprehension - am I crazy having both wrists done at once? - but for the most part am looking foward to the end goal of being able to do things I enjoy without pain, numbness or my finger locking. I didn't realize how many things I had stopped doing. Some were obvious - I haven't gone bowling in several years. Others just "fell by the wayside" as I became more inactive - riding my bike (hands fall asleep), sewing, crafts, even using my camera is difficult with three of my fingers always numb. Along with the inactivity came boredom and snacking and regaining of the pounds I had lost - ugh!

My husband, children and MIL are all committed to helping while I recover (I waited until my sons' college semister was over). I have a stack of DVD's and audio books ready on my Ipod to get me through the first few days. Since I won't be in the kitchen I am hoping to use this enforced rest to break my snacking habit!

I don't like not feeing in control so being the one depending on others, even for a few days will give me a chance to work on that virture "patience" as will the recovery & rehab time.

All in all I'm looking foward to this "new start", being able to do things I enjoy once again and using this "detour in life's road" to get back on track with a healthy lifestyle.

Good luck with your surgery. Just think of all the things you can go back to doing.

Bloomin' Tuesday Signs of Spring!

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

Going to get cold and nasty for a few days here in Central FL but spring is upon us here. Saw many trees starting to flower while we were out walking on Sunday. Here are two photos from my front flower bed and three courtesy of Wal-Mart's garden center.

Views from Saddle Creek Park

Saturday, January 03, 2009

Yesterday we finally got around to checking out a local nature trail just 10 minutes from our house. The trail is surrounded by lakes and marshland. We enjoyed the views, wildlife and photo opportunities so much we were there for over two hours and only made it 1/3 of the way around the first one mile loop. One of the most exciting sites of the day was a 12' gator - we were safely on the other side of the lake! We definitely will return often!

Can you find the gator in the photo above?

A very confused tree!

Thank you for your time and posting these amazing photos. I can't wait to have the spring back in my neck of the woods. We are getting ready for another big snow storm up in the North.

Happy Friday Dear Garden Friend,

Holiday goals

Wednesday, November 05, 2008

Having lost 23 pounds since Feb. of 2008 and maintained it all summer I don't want to gain any of it back over the holidays. Would actually like to lose that "last 5 pounds". To that end these are my goals for the holiday season:
1. emoticon Exercise everyday - no excuses. Living in Central Florida this is one of the best times of the year to be out and about. Walking, swimming, gardening and yard work are all still possible on most days so I need to get moving, at least a half hour every day.
2. emoticonFaithfully log my meals and stick to my calorie limits, treats should be treats not everyday parts of my meal plan. As I was using a food log program I bought for my computer I bought before joining Spark I will continue to use that to track all of my foods but will track my fruits/veggies and water on Spark. Surprising how you can stay in your calorie count and eat healthy foods and only eat 2 or 3 things from the fruit/veggie group!
3. emoticonStart ongoing list with one thing to be thankful for everyday to help stay focused and remember what is important.
4. emoticon Plan! Make a plan to get a project done, keep up on filing and all of the things that get me down when I let them get behind (even housework and laundry). Why let little stuff like this build up into a big road block when it can be brought under control so easily?
5. emoticonGet enough sleep! Go to bed earlier!
6. emoticon Enjoy the holidays with family and friends!
