I get a monthly e-mail from "Leadership Wired." Today's e-mail came full of quotes relating to vision. They all made me stop and think. I thought I would share them in hopes that you, the reader, would also get something out of it, if nothing but a moment to ponder the words. Enjoy ...
"The real voyage of discovery consists of not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes."
~ Marcel Proust
"I can teach anybody how to get what they want out of life. The problem is that I can't find anybody who can tell me what they want."
~ Mark Twain
"A vision is not just a picture of what could be; it is an appeal to our better selves, a call to become something more."
~ Rosabeth Moss Kanter
"Vision is not enough. It must be combined with venture. It is not enough to stare up the steps, we must step up the stairs."
~ Vaclav Havel

How to get through the final week of an MBA program with a comprehensive final exam, TWO papers (one team, one individual), one PowerPoint presentation, and five discussion board posts coming at you:
Final exam = 50 questions
Goal = 10 questions per day for 5 days
Team paper = 6 members of a hugely broken team
Goal = I did my part in writing half the paper; the others have their part; let it go and go to bed
Individual paper = Outline + key points + Opening + Closing
Goal = Outline completed by Tuesday night (check), key points by Thursday night, opening and closing on Saturday
Brain = fried.
Get some rest.

My company has so many small benefits that add up big. For the past several years, I have never taken advantage of them paying half of a zoo membership because I was so busy with school that I knew I would not use it. In addition, I'm such an animal lover that I struggle with the concept of a zoo at all. With that said, I DO understand the educational aspects of the zoo, as well as the fact that many zoos (including the Kansas City Zoo) strive to work with building the population of nearly extinct animals.
This year, I decided to treat our household by purchasing (at 1/2-price) a Gold Plus membership, which is a primary/secondary membership where either one of us can take a guest also. So yesterday morning, we did a very small walk at the zoo because the weather was so beautiful. They have a pretty great way of dealing with handicap accessibility. My partner's legs tired quickly with her MS, so we just took the tram back to near the exit.
Today, it was again a stunning day. I cannot study for 24 hours AND I needed exercise. So today I went back by myself and went for a really LONG walk. In fact, I made it through the entirety of Africa, which is very big and spread out at this zoo. I actually heard people complaining about how spread out the animals were today. I wanted to stop and explain to them that it was a win-win. The animals have more room and more natural habitat, while people get more exercise. Trust me, I didn't bother to try and explain.
So today, I saw playful river otters obviously relishing their environment as they frolicked together in the water, beautiful cheetahs, elephants, lions, crocodiles, baboons, zebras, giraffes, rhinos, tons of birds, chimps, and lots of other animals that I can't even remember the names of.
It was fun! And it was great exercise! I only saw PART of everything that is there. They also have paddle boats that you can rent (more exercise). I have decided that if the zoo is going to be here (and it is a really pretty zoo in a gorgeous part of the city), that I can support it to try and make it the best environment possible for the animals. And they have polar bears coming in June!
So this is one of the first treats I'm giving myself now that I have my life back soon!!

The SparkPeople calendar for today talks about milestones. The advice is to celebrate along the way because each smaller step gets you closer to the big goal - whatever your goal may be. With this in mind, I am thinking about what will happen for me in 9 days, then again in less than one month.
In 9 days, I am forever finished with my "formal" education. On May 15, I will walk across the stage (again), but this time for my master's degree (an MBA). I point out the word "formal" because I believe that education is never-ending, or at least it should be if you want to truly live life and all that it has to offer. So classes are over with on April 18 at midnight. I will have a lot of extra time on my hands. I've been through this before with my undergraduate degree, so if history repeats itself, in less than a few months after that, I will be again so busy that I will be saying to myself, "How in the world did you ever find time to go to school AND work?"
So what I am thinking about today is that I would like to start a new goal after school is over with. Well, OK, I admit it, I have many goals still left. That seems to be how I operate, but I operate well, so I won't complain or try to change it. With that said, I want to "add" to my list of goals trying to slow down a little bit. This year, I would like to take more time to RELAX!!
Only a person with a Type A personality could make a goal to relax!!!! :-) I love it!!!!! So when I graduate, I am going to throw a party to celebrate (OK, maybe a couple of them), then I'm going to try and take a chill ...
Any words of wisdom out there to help me toward my new goal?

I am, once again, reminding myself (as did the SparkPeople calendar today) about the many benefits of exercise. I have not been as consistent as I would have liked, in large part due to the abscessed tooth. So now I want to get back there again.
Here are just a smattering of the benefits:
- Feel-good chemicals (can you say "endorphin highs")
- Reducing stress
- Combatting depression
- Clearing your head
- Promoting health
- Promoting weight loss
- A wonderful way to spend your leisure time; good clean fun
So I'm making a date for tomorrow night. I can do my volunteer "beautification" for my neighborhood association (a/k/a trash patrol) and it's a true win-win.
