Women's Self Defense

Wednesday, October 13, 2010

Feeling a little better today, just not quite up to par. Started the Mucinex today, cuz this sinus crud has now settled in my chest. Hopefully, will be 99% better tomorrow, I'm really missing my workouts, it's killing me to come home and plop on the couch and read, but honestly, I haven't felt like moving. Hopefully today will show marked improvement. I have to suck it up and go to class tonight, it's our first one, so I can't miss it.

emoticonI enrolled my daughter and I in a women's self defense class at a local karate studio. I wanted to make sure my baby girl knew how to defend herself since she will be going away to college next year and mommy won't be there to protect her. I think all young ladies (and women) should take these classes, ya never know when you may be confronted by a stranger in a parking lot, someone trying to take your purse or even date rape. Want my baby to be aware of these situations and know the best way out of them. So I volunteered to go with her to the classes, to keep her motivated (wink, wink). Who knows, we both may end up liking martial arts. Will report tomorrow. Til then.... Hope all my SP buddies are working out extra hard this week just for me, since I can't.

What a great idea, and it sounds like fun! My parents always said they weren't worried about me, because I'm so mean that my attacker would be the one in the hospital by the end of things, rofl! I did learn a few self defense moves in the Army, but like someone else said, if you don't continually train, you forget it. So, keep practicing what you learn so that it's second nature.
Before we got a handgun, my hubs made me keep a hitch wrench (big, heavy, easy to grab) between the driver's seat and the door, so that I could easily whack someone if necessary. And pepper spray in the purse, lol. (He scares easily.)

I think it's awesome that you signed her and yourself up. You're right; women do need to know how to protect themselves. An ounce of prevention...
Hope you feel better soon!! Have a good day despite the crud in your chest.

That's awesome! I always feel like if somebody tried to attack me, I'd just pull the Chalene kick, punch and jam on them. Maybe do one on their groin. Just sayin'. emoticon

Hope you feel better soon. If it makes you feel any better, I've had the sinus stuff over three weeks now. The crap just won't go away!!! Maybe next week...maybe.

Taking a self defense class is a great idea. Everyone should do that!!!!! My only other thought is that I hope you NEVER have to use what you learn!!!!
Have fun in the classes and get better soon.

You NEED that rest right now. Take it, don't sweat it.

I am so impressed you signed your daughter up for that AND that you're going with her.

DH & I took a self defense course several years ago in Austin . . . not sure how much I really remember from it. That's the biggest problem, you gotta keep training.

I've been thinking of doing the same thing...enrolling myself and my kids in self defense courses. It'll be neat to hear how it goes for you two...

Still Feeling Yucky

Tuesday, October 12, 2010

Day Two of being sick - YUCK, I'm over it already. Hubby made some yummy homemade chicken noodle soup for me last night, he makes the best soup. Went to bed at 8:00, so you know I'm sick crawling into bed that early.

Woke up this morning, after tossing and turning all night, didnt really get a good night's rest - STILL SICK this morning and now hubby is too. I feel worse today than yesterday, but hopefully that means I will be better tomorrow. You know you always get worse before you get better - at least that's what I keep telling myself.

So we both will drag ourselves thru the day, pump up the Sudafed and have leftover soup tonight for dinner, hopefully whatever bug we've caught will leave very soon, cuz I missing out on a lot of exercise and fitness minutes :(

Hope all my sparkies are well and having a super day.

Bummer! I am so sorry to hear you've got the cooties. I have had some kind of yucky stuff for almost three weeks now. I just can't seem to shake it. Not enough to go to the doctor, but just enough to be annoying! Hopefully, you'll be feeling better tomorrow for sure!

Soup sounds delicious! I'm going to make your salsa chicken this week. Thanks for the recipe!

Don't worry about the missed fitness...right now your body needs YOU to take care of it and give the rest it needs so it can fight off this bug! You'll be back to full swing before you know it! Hey, at least you've got a guy who makes great soup...I'd be afraid to eat anything my hub made. emoticon Get some rest and feel better soon!

Under the Weather

Monday, October 11, 2010

I woke up yesterday with a terrible head cold, didn't really do much at all yesterday.

Starting the week off SICK really SUCKS. My head hurts, my chest is congested, stuffy and runny nose and coughing. Oh how I hate being sick. Just gonna drag myself thru the day. Whaaa, whaaa, boo hoo, woah woah is me emoticon

Hoping I can manage an upper body arm workout today, but I'm betting I can't run with a headache and chest congestion. This really is NOT a convenient time for illness, since it is going to interfere with my training this week, but as my sister says... "It is, what it is", so I'm NOT going to have a bad attitude about this, I'm just gonna feel physically horrible with a SMILE on my face. It could be worse, it could be race week. emoticon

Hope everyone had a great weekend and is enjoying a happy Monday. Could someone please pass the tissues and the Sudafed, cough, cough, sniffle, sniffle.

OUCH - Yuck - I hate working out when I feel crappy. Give yourself a break to heal up.
CHICKEN SOUP YEP - That is always good.
Feel better. I am going home tonight and back to work tomorrow.
HUBS is doing much better now. Still was a very bad trauma but we will make it through it and the worst is behind us right now.

I've always read that if the congestion is above the neck, you can run if you want to. But if it's in the chest, you shouldn't.

So take care of you. Your body is trying to tell you to take a rest. When I have a cold, usually the only thing I do is walk the dogs. They just totally wipe me out.

Oh, and chicken soup really does help. Feel better soon!

Kicked it, Boxed it and Ripped it

Friday, October 08, 2010

emoticonWoo hoo - yesterday afternoon we did the P90X Kempo, what a great kickboxing workout, then did the AB Ripper. - Boy was I whipped when we got finished. Glad to get in that workout before dinner.

Dinner with my son was nice, AND I DID NOT OVEREAT (patting myself on the back) glad I got to see him before he moves on Saturday. Wishing him the best in his new endeavor.

Today, is a "Take It Easy" day - gonna get in a 3-mile walk at lunch, no running today.

Tonight - High school football game against our rival and I'm saving calories for a ballpark hotdog, nothing says football like a hotdog, yum, they better have relish this time. Good luck to our DOLPHINS, we are undefeated - GO FINS !!!

After game tonight gonna do the P90X arms and shoulder workout - gotta get it in before the day is over. I have a plan and I'm sticking as close to it as possible, only one little slip up this week with missing a workout, so I can count this week as a SUCCESS, scale didn't move, but a fitness SUCCESS.

Tomorrow it's an early a.m. 7 mile run, only 2 weekends left before the race after tomorrow's run, gotta work on some speed.

Gonna be a glorious weather day, gonna take my motorcycle out for a spin to enjoy the beautiful weather. Hope everyone has a great weekend, I will check in with you all on Monday. emoticon

Training - Day 4

Thursday, October 07, 2010

Ended up running 5 miles last night before dinner - woo hoo - and had lasagna for dinner. Had to hustle to pack lunches for next day and wash a load of clothes before Survivor. I made it with 5 minutes to spare, good thing, because if I sat down 15 minutes before it came on, I would have fallen sleep, the run really whipped me last night.

Overslept, AGAIN this morning, but not a bad thing, I caught up on some much needed sleep, been running on low fuel in that department.

Leaving work a little early today. Gonna go home and bust out a quick workout, shower, then meet my son for dinner. I don't get to see him too often and he's moving on Saturday to Maryland. Makes me sad to think my son will now be 4 hours away. But hopefully this will be a great move for him, new job, new people, new life. Glad he's getting "it" together.

Dinner - it's Mexican, my son's favorite, so I will have to extra careful not to suck down a whole bowl of tortilla chips, I know it will be a very emotional dinner, saying goodbye.

This is going to be a happy and sad kinda day, just hope to make it through. "LIFE" it happens.

Enjoy your supper tonight it sure sounds like you deserve it. Even though 4 hours seems so far away, it is much easier to keep in touch now than it was when we moved away from home, I'm sure your son will always be close.

First, awesome job on the run last night! Second, don't sweat it on the sleeping in this morning. Obviously, your body needed it! Third, I can only imagine how you are feeling about your baby moving four hours away. I have only one son and he's 19. Went away to college last year and then came back to attend a local college this year. I missed my baby terribly, but love that he's back. I know one day he'll graduate and find a job somewhere else. That is his goal! I don't blame him! When that day comes, I'll cry my eyes out, but know that he is on his life's journey and he'll be ready. I need to find somewhere else to "vacation" anyway. Hopefully, he'll find a job somewhere warm! Fourth...MEXICAN? emoticon That's my all-time favorite! All I can say is enjoy! You deserve it. You can rock out six miles tomorrow morning. emoticon Unless, of course, this is you instead... emoticon. Oops! You said chips...not tequila!

Yes Be Strong - I am sure he will do well. It's hard being hours away from family. The times that you will have together now will be one's to cherish. Enjoy them and keep them.
Good for you on your 5 mile run.
You are such an inspiration to me. Thanks for being such a great SP friend.
