Goals really help me stay ocused. I'm actually trying to decide on what should be the first HM in 2013 . . . cause I want to be signed up BEFORE Vegas.

Sometimes I totally know how I've done without the scale; sometimes I think I've lost & I've gained, or visa versa. Sort of lime TOM, I can never quite be sure these days.

Calling all Bikers (Cyclists) - Help !!!!

Help !!!!!!

I rode 8 miles on my bike last night, but the seat was totally killing my tushy. How the heck do you ride a bike with such a little, hard as a rock seat? I'm using biking as cross training but I can see myself really taking an interest in biking, but biking should not be painful.

What's the secret to a pain free bike ride? I don't think they make tractor seats for my bike.

Training Day 3 = complete.

Rocking It emoticon No Excuses

Borrowed this pic from a friends FB page - simple words make quite a statement. (Goal: I'm gonna look like that one day, for real)

i just started biking in the last couple of months and WOW. I was surprised how sore I was. I got a pair of biking shorts from aerotech and they have helped especially on the Newport News trail to Yorktown ride. I think what has really helped though is to just ride thru it. The more I ride the more - the more my body adjusts to it. I just wish I could stop pretty. I look like a weeble getting ready to fall down whenever i get off my bike :) Just like everything else in life - time and practice...

Okay, if you're serious about biking a sore tushie come with the turf until the tushie gets used to the pounding. It took me the longest time to find the saddle that best fit my style of riding. If you're doing a bit of distance (20+ miles), a cushy seat is not the answer. Visit your LBS and get some advice. One thing for sure, you can buy cheap tops, but don't go cheap on your shorts. I use ASSOS shorts exclusively. Expensive, but worth every penny. Good luck, my Bud!!

This is the bike seat I have and I love it. No pain ever even when I used it for the first time. Previous seats were painful. I have a "comfort" bike which is more like what I had when I was a kid 55 years ago. It is not a racing bike or dirt bike--it is fairly old fashioned and works beautifully with this seat. Good luck.

There's a variety of bike seats out there - padded, "anatomically correct", etc. And get some cushioned shorts, absolutely!
My first few times riding I had a sore butt as well - even 30-minute rides with a "comfy" seat.

Which bike are you riding? Riding position and distance dictates saddle needs. If it's a road bike with a tiny hard saddle, that's what you need. Add cycling shorts and it will help. If you're going to ride longer miles, then upgrade your saddle. If it's a hybrid or mountain bike and you're not going to ride more than an hour, get a gel pad cover to go over the stock seat. Let me know what you have and I will give you better advice!

NATPLUMMER 8/21/2012 1:22PM

You can buy a pad for your seat or by padded shorts or both.
I find that I can't do more than an hour max (even with my padded shorts) before I can't take it anymore.

Your local bike shop should be your best resource on this. Definitely there is some "adjustment" necessary to tolerate your bike seat. It can be tempting to go find some big cushy seat, but invariably, if one takes to serious cycling, you'll find such a seat holds you back from pedaling as well as you might with a better seat, plus such seats often prove to be just as uncomfortable in time and perhaps even worse than the teensy hard seats.

Most of the seat covers aren't worth much either.

If you think you're going to stick with cycling definitely invest in a good pair of cycling shorts. They will set you back but they are worth every penny. I recently bought a 2nd pair...both are Louis Garneau brand which seem to be pretty highly regarded. I upgraded to a higher quality short on #2, the Alveo style and while it was double the lower quality in cost ($100 as opposed to $50) this skinflint feels it was worth every penny. The higher quality bike short has more panels used in it's construction (10 panels as opposed to the 8 panels of the lower grade short) plus there is no internal stitching which I found could be QUITE annoying on longer rides with my other pair.

Back to the LBS (local bike shop): They can be a big help in double-checking your bike "fit" to be sure the height and position of your saddle is optimal along with other aspects of your bike. If you get a circumspect: "Yeah, looks okay to me" sort of fit, then shop around for someone who can do better than that.

Often they'll have you sit on a special piece of paper to see where your "sit" bones are positioned relative to your bike seat so that they can gauge whether or not a different seat might be worth trying.

Whatever steps you take, you will find that there is definitely a period of "breaking in" for your butt to catch up with what your body wants to do...namely go, go, GO! :-)

There are helpful message threads on the Cycling SparkTeam which might provide more info of use to you.

the larger the seat the worse it is for posture. Unfortunately the bike seat will hurt until you get accustom to it. The bike seats hurt because when you sit in a chair your butt bone hits in a totally different area than when you are on the bike. You will get use to it. Take a day off in between and you will start to notice it will hurt less and less the more you do it! Good Luck!

Depends of what type of bike you are riding. My road bike has a smaller hard seat and it has to have that seat on it and my big hybrid has a big ol butt bike seat on it. That seat is much more comfortable (check on amazon for bigger bike seats).

It does take a while to bet the booty better no matter what type of seat you have but keep on biking. I might go for one tomorrow night.

I agree with the other comments, the padded seat. Also, sporting goods stores also sell "bikers shorts" where there is cushioning in the lower region area. Both in combination, you won't hurt anymore. Good luck!

I've just started biking also make sure the seats at the right height and honestly that its not to big. (when i got my road bike the seat was smaller felt better? weird) also got a pair of bike shorts $ but so worth it!!!!!! 45 miles was longest ride, Flat road at the shore 13 hilly miles at home and no butt problems best of luck it is so much fun

I'm no cycling expert, Lisa, but I know my bike had a rock hard seat, too. I got an el-cheapo bike at Walmart. Good enough for my rides around the neighborhood. But, the seat was very hard, so I had to buy a better seat. Perhaps the lower priced bikes need better seats?
Good luck and have fun riding. emoticon

Daughtry Mania 2

Monday, August 20, 2012

I have to say that this was the best weekend EVER. I got to see my favorite rocker DAUGHTRY, and I got to meet Chris and the Band, OMGEEEE, a once in a lifetime chance. I had to be there at 3:45 to check in for meet and greet, we got there at 2:30 so we had a couple drinks at the pub across the street. I was so nervous, but it was awesome to meet Mr. Hotness. Since I had the meet and greet pass they let us in the venue first, so a lady I met in line helped me save 3 seats for my buddies who were waiting outside to get in. We were 2nd row right smack dab in the middle, OMG I thought I was going to die. Thanks Teresa for always making it a great time full of laughs and thanks for your paparazzi pics. Partied like a rock star, woo hoo. Enjoy the pics. I uploaded a v-blog of some concert footage also.

Party is over now, "but the memories remain". Now back to reality.

Half Marathon Redo training started yesterday - 190 miles til race day, giving it my best and my ALL !!!!
