Birthday Bash with a Touch of Splash

Tuesday, June 05, 2012

Last night’s party went off well, it was my DD 19th Birthday, my baby is all grown up *sniffle sniffle* . She's wearing our traditional special occasion tiara.

She wanted a mermaid themed party - and she's how old again???? glad she still celebrates the kid in her. Went to the ever-so-dangerous and tempting Mexican restaurant. My meal strategy worked great and I decided to stand up and mingle with everyone (to keep my mind off nibbling those yummy chips), sheesh disaster averted on that one and I skipped the guacamole, YEAH. DH and I shared a chicken breast with cheese and onions and some rice, so I came in 30 calories under for the day and I even had a three bite-size piece of cake.

To my surprise, my daughter absolutely loved the homemade birthday card I made her. She loved the Disney mermaid reusable shopping bag I put her gifts in – with the Disney mermaid beach towel, an IOU for another surprise and a sundress (that shocked me - mine and her taste tend to differ greatly in the fashion department). She even loved the homemade mermaid birthday cake - the ole SP diet coke cake recipe. She got a sassy pair of leopard pumps from her BF's family - she better hide those, cause momma really liked them. She has a "thing" for shoes too, bet you know where she gets that from.

We all left and to my surprise she was home when I got there – she wanted to show me all the stuff she bought at the mall yesterday. Her BF took her on a shopping spree for her birthday and she tried on the dress I bought her – it fit perfect and she was very happy, and it looked really great on her, I can’t wait to borrow it, lol.

And they all lived happily ever after. The End.

You Know You're a Runner When....

Monday, June 04, 2012

First off please forgive me for slacking catching up with SP today - thanks to all who commented over the weekend, it's been crazy busy.

Happy Monday everyone, what a crazy whirlwind of a weekend. I won't bore you with all the details, just a few, lol.
Got to spend time with the cutie pie grandson - he's getting so big.

Enjoyed a great long run on Saturday (13.5 miles), almost didn't happen. Supposed to leave at 0430, but I awoke at 0330 for some strange reason and it was thundering, lightning and pouring down rain. For a second I was relieved I didn't really want to go, but then I was disappointed - all in the same minute. Got up and decided to chance it, no sense in cancelling, worst that could happen is getting caught out in the rain, but that's what cell phones are for (just like Friday's bike riding adventure to work - it was hubby to the rescue due to a tornado warning). We decided to change the route at the last minute (originally planned an 18-mile) and what an adventure that turned out to be, we had no idea how far we would actually ran until we arrived home, to be disappointed that we ONLY ran 13.5. My husband said.... "ONLY". Ha ha, so I had to laugh and shrug it off, there's always next time.

Birthday celebrations are in full swing for this week - lots of partying to do. Today is my DD 19th birthday, celebrating tonight at her fav Mexican restaurant. That should be my only challenge this week, surviving Mexican, the whole cake thing is not even tempting, but Mexican???? OMG, my weakness. But I'm armed with a plan and have been chatting with my SP buddy all day about it, she's given me the "pep talk", so I'm gonna do it for ME and do it for HER too. No sweat.

I did manage to get about a 15-minute break in all my hectic-ness, sat in the lawn chair to browse the sale ads with my shadow with me, what a life, eh?

I received the following in an email and absolutely had to share for all my running friends. For a good laugh, here it is... You know you're a runner when...

~you no longer make fun of fanny packs because your running belt looks very similar (although cooler)
to one.

~you have more running clothes than regular clothes in your laundry pile.

~you're not embarrassed to wear spandex.

~you're always hungry.

~you smirk when non-runners ask you, "So how long is this Marathon?"

~you know where exactly one mile from your front door is (in any direction).

~you own more pairs of running sock than dress socks.

~you get jealous when you're driving in your car and you pass a runner.

~a beautiful summer day turns overcast and you're glad because it's much better running weather.

~you call 5 miles a "short run" and people look at you funny.

~you spend the last two miles of a marathon thinking about what you're going to do different when you run it next year.

Hey June

Friday, June 01, 2012

Welcome June, my favorite month. Lots of family birthdays in the first 12 days - 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12 - sheesh I'm gonna be broke, just like Christmas.

I woke up to see my kitty Harley sitting at my window, he's doing his morning meditation ya know.

I did a recap of May yesterday, so let's move on to June and what I hope to accomplish. Not too many changes from last month:

emoticonI'm still going be running (I'm officially registering this month for my first full-marathon - woo hoo, color me green - Shamrock Marathon, March 2013, it's a ways away but have to send $$ in early). Even with the summer heat getting bad, I am going to work on getting my body acclimated, take it slow and easy, I don't want to bench myself just because it's hot. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate.

emoticonI'm still going to give myself smiley faces for every day that I am 100% on track (this is going to prove difficult considering all the birthday cakes that will be coming my way in the next two weeks, lol) and I am going on an all-girls getaway to the beach next weekend for 5 days.

emoticonI am going to concentrate on more weight lifting and ab work. Need to work on getting the jigglies at lot less jiggly, lol.

emoticonI am going to make EVERY effort to find ways to stay active and burn calories - Seize EVERY opportunity and find creative new ways too. I decided to start the month off on the right foot by riding my beach cruiser to work this morning - 10.5 miles - great way to start the day with 486 calories gone. The ride home should prove interesting since the weather is predicted to include severe thunderstorms, torrential rain, hail and a possibility of tornados - oh my, guess I didn't think that one thru all the way, but I can always leave my bike here and have someone give me a ride, but lets hope for sunny skies til I make it home.

New Mantra - "It's All About Me" a promise to myself... I am making June "MY" month, after all it is my birthday this month (8th), so June is hereby deemed "ALL ABOUT ME MONTH".

And now..... for the moment I've been waiting for since May 1st. Drum roll please.....{Click link below please}

www.youtube.com/watch?v=itAOGRiYRLI

I lost ONE pound - woo hoo. That's almost 0.5 ounces every day in the month of May. I'll take it. It's the lowest weight I've been since 1993, and it's only taken me 3+ years to get here, lol. Hey, Hey, Welcome to 130-Ville.

While the scale didn't exactly make me jump up and down with overwhelming excitement (I was hoping), I do feel a sense of pride and accomplishment. I started this journey when I was 39, exactly 6 months before my 40th birthday. As I approach the big 43 next week, I can smile and truly see the positive changes. I am ECSTATIC and I remain POSITIVELY POSITIVE.

"All about me" is wonderful. Many folks don't understand that being selfish, in the true sense of the word, is a good thing. I believe one should take care of him or herself first, to have the means to take care of others when necessary.

Dinner - His and Hers

Thursday, May 31, 2012

Last night the DH was going to be late getting home from work so I decided to take advantage of the "ME" time. I put in a new yoga DVD last night (Robert Yee) and I spent 60 minutes of glorious yoga time. No one can say that yoga is for sissy’s that’s for sure, my arms are killing me this morning. And there was one pose I got into last night that caused my cranky hip to knot up, but it’s a great way to find out exactly which muscles are weak and need some work, yikes. (upside down bow – OMG I thought I was gonna be stuck like that, lol) I really, really, really liked that Yee guy and would love to be wherever he was filming that DVD, looks like Hawaii. I definitely think the atmosphere in which you practice has a big influence on the outcome. Kinda hard at home, with the phone ringing and the dog barking and my cat, Harley thinks it’s time to weave in and out of my legs while I'm in downward dog and then bite me for some attention, you know he can’t wait til I’m done for me to pet him, lol.

The His and Hers Dinners....Can you guess which one is mine??

The DH wanted hot dogs for dinner, I used to love hot dogs, but now...not so much so I wasn't looking forward to dinner, but I fixed hot dogs for DH. He had his meal and I just heated up some odds and ends… one left over pork rib (2 oz), microwave minute brown rice (half of that), fresh broccoli and some frozen peas – turned out to be a great meal for me but I did end up having 2 oreos while watching the Hatfields and the McCoy’s last night. (Pics are not meant to down talk the DH, he eats all the healthy meals I cook, he just needs his comfort foods like everyone else)

Great weather day today, gonna be hot. Hoping to get my run in this evening, but just found out my well laid out plans for today just got changed, my GS has a playoff baseball game so will have to shift things around for that, but I wouldn't miss it that's for sure. (my wheels are turning now, trying to work it out) OK, I've got the solution, I'm going to arrive at the ballfield at 515 and map out a two mile up and back, to be finished and end up back at the park before the game starts, and I've even recruited my SIL to go with me (he's training for his first half in November). Now I have to go home at lunch to get my running gear and pack me a wrap for my dinner at the ball park. How's that for some fast thinking?

May Wrap-Up: I earned 27 smiley faces out of 31 - not too shabby, all in all I felt like it was a great month for both eating and fitness. Tomorrow is doom's day, gonna step on the scale and see how the month went according to the evil beast. To be honest, I'm really kinda scared and nervous about it. Staying off of it for the whole month has done wonders for my mood and I really don't care if I lost any weight or not (yes I do care and I'm hoping I did), just as long as I haven't gained. I know I had a great month, I treated myself well and I've been doing some great running, so I call it a SUCCESS already. Will let everyone know tomorrow.

Getting Ripped emoticonNo Excuses.

High-Stepping the Short Cut

Wednesday, May 30, 2012

Last night I decided to go for a run after dinner, it was still pretty hot and the sun was still blazing - 85 degrees with 75% humidity, uggghhh. I don't do well running in the heat, but I really wanted to at least get out and walk, so that was my plan, to just walk. I have a feeling it's going to be one hot summer.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-mU-YSk32I

I headed out to my usual running route and I had walked about a half-mile, still trying to decide if I wanted to run, well of course I wanted to run [just give me another couple minutes to let my dinner be completely settled in my stomach]. I usually run on the road, right where the run-off gutter and the road meet so I don't get run over by crazy drivers and there's plenty of room for me to hop up on the curb in case some nut gets too close for comfort.

There were a lot of branches and pine needles littering the gutter from the downpour we had earlier. I happened to look down and I almost stepped on this..... [don't look if you are weak hearted or squimish, lol].

A gigantic snake. Low and behold, that sucker was huge - holy ham. I run this way in the mornings when it's dark, I could have stepped on it, when it was alive. My heart was about to jump right out of my chest, thank heavens it was a dead snake. Live snake, dead snake - it makes no difference, I'm deathly afraid either way. I decided then it was time to run, lol. I didn't stop to check it out too closely, I just got on my way and from then on...my eyes were peeled and on the lookout for slithery, slimy creatures. I run by several lakes and waterways on my route, so no surprise I was bound to run into one of these disgusting things sooner or later, but I really would have preferred not at all, but now I will be ever so cautious where I step, that's for sure. And my boss just told me a story about a snake hanging from her tree in the back yard, so I'll be on the lookout.... on the ground and in the air - oooh now I've got the heebie jeebies.

The heat was getting to me, so I slowed my pace, alot. I still couldn't stop thinking about that stupid snake - I shoulda stopped to take a pic, hey that would make a great blog. I decided I'd go the same way back and snap a pic, at a safe distance of course, one can never be too far away from a dead snake.

I wasn't running fast enough to keep up with my usual playlist since the heat had me running at a slower pace - a snail could have been faster than me, so I just turned off the ole ipod and decided to just focus on the run. I started thinking about lots of things...

how people can run when it's 95 degrees outside?
would one of those cool rags I saw on TV work in my hat to keep me cool?
Could I live in a tropical climate?, etc., etc. then something really weird slipped into my mind....

those old marching band days. It sure was hot enough out there to feel like band camp. I spent numerous weeks out in the hot summer heat practicing with the marching band. I thought about the parades we used to march in, that was fun, but my thoughts went to the high-stepping marching [was the heat cooking my brain, where did this stroll down memory lane come from?]. I'm such a geek but it made me smile to think about those fun times back in the day. [for inquiring minds, I played the clarinet in the Marching Tigers band], ya'll can stop laughing now.

I was approaching the elementary school on the corner, I usually make a diagonal shortcut to cut that corner, but it is in the grass. Should I take the short-cut, there might be a snake in the grass. Oooh my....decisions, decisions. It was pretty hot and I was about OVER the run, so I said what the heck. I decided I'd just tip-toe thru the grass...or tip toe thru the tulips (that sounds much more flowery).

Tip-toe - HECK NO. I was high-stepping it thru that grass, lol. So that's where the high-stepping thought came from....must have been my subconscious preparing me to high-tail it thru the grass. Bet I looked absolutely ridiculous to all the cars passing by, but I had to hurry and get out of that grass.

Only one mile left, so I started to look for the exact spot of the snake, I found it, ewwwwhhhh, but I had to snap a pic so I could show the DH, he would never believe I saw a giant anaconda on my run and of course I had to make a boring running blog exciting.

Beware yall.... summer is here, the heat is on, and be on the lookout for creepy, crawly things.

Now that's an interesting run! Snakes dead or alive give me the heebie jeebies too! Love the high stepping short cut through the grass, great workout!!     Baaa ha ha ha ha haaa! Funny stuff! See, I'm just the opposite. I would have done a full forensic examination and texted multiple pics to the DH for his amusement. I'm kind of weird that way. Live snakes, however, are another matter entirely! I played clarinet in the marching band a few eons ago, too! I'm sure glad I don't have to do that now, though. Too hot, and my knees are too creaky!

So with you, don't like the heat, AT ALL.

Good for you on your run. For some reason, marching band in the summer when we were younger did not seem as bad as it does now, did it? Oh youth :)

HA HA HA - You make me laugh. That was great - felt like I was there with ya. I was thinking while reading the blog about how if you came to visit you'd have to be on the lookout for snakes. We live right in front of a river and get snakes all the time. In fact, my kitty is a great snake killer. I had one get into my kitchen during the springtime while I was cleaning house. I was walking from the living room into the kitchen (which is right by our back door) and got stopped in my tracks by a snake coiled up on the floor right in front of our stove. My cat was there playing with it and tortured it for a very long time and then dismembered it into 3 pieces. Can you say - EWE.
I too high step it through our grass but not because I was in marching band but because we have snakes.... Hee Hee. And I think it's cool you played the clarinet. Thanks for sharing.

Highstepping it - oh yeah! Way to mix it up, girl! We were driving home the other day and saw two girls freaking out in the grass like you and there was a snake on the sidewalk. What the heck is going on?

I was saying' Tip Toe Through the Tulips just before reading it. Great minds think alike!

Have a great HumpDay! I know I am!!!! emoticon

You could have them in your house . . . have I got a snake tale for you!

Good job getting it done. We had similar weather yesterday, but with the pretty severe thunderstorms I took the high rd & ran on the treadmill. Almost felt like Austin . . . made me homesick.

You're so funny! Snakes are gross, but I've learned which ones to allow to live in my yard. Some keep the bad ones away, so I have to let them alone. (I live in the country.)

Band camp...oh the memories... I remember the heat and being burnt to a crisp! I was in the colorguard. (The Super Fine Rifle Line!)

Love your blogs, Girl!

YIKES!!! That snake would freak me out, too!! A couple of weeks ago when we were out doing our long run on the trail, a bicyclist who had passed us was standing next to his bike and pointing to the ground.....giant snake!! It finally moved off to the grass and we all went by quickly.
Good idea to take it slow in the heat.
