We ordered our dining room furniture!

Wednesday, May 21, 2008

I am so thrilled! We have lived in our home for almost 21 years and our dining room has been a play room, den, and office at different times, but never a dining room! We really never needed a dining room because we didn't have people over to eat very often until recently. Our breakfast nook was small, but it can handle 6 people if they all sit close to one another! Our house is not very large, so we have utilized every inch of space. With my older son moving out, now we have more room.

There is so much work to be done, but it is very rewarding work. We have to move my husband's office to my son's old bedroom. He has an extraordinary amount of stuff. That will be a major workout. I could burn off a whole cheesecake moving all that stuff upstairs to the new office! Then, we will paint my husband's old office and move my office from the dining room to the downstairs office. Then, we will paint the dining room and assemble the furniture for it. Finally, we will wash and put up the new Pfaltzgraff Tea Rose dishes that we bought on our trip to Pigeon Forge, TN. It will be almost like living in a new house!

I miss my older son, but he lives only 30 minutes away and he loves his new apartment, so I am happy for him. I went into the my grocery deals website to update my profile. Previously, we had one dog and two sons living at home. I changed dog to zero and children to zero and felt a little sad. Then, I thought about how much my grocery bill will go down and I got over it! My younger son is still living here, but will move out on June 6. However, with just my older son no longer living here, my laundry load has gone down by about half. That boy sure got a lot of clothing dirty!

Oh wow! Is that YOUR dining room? You actually have a fireplace in it? If so, I am sooooooooooooooo green with envy! That's something I have always wanted! I can't wait till the time our kids are out for good now so we can work on the house, too. Definitely cured of the empty nest syndrome here! Hugs, Calen~

I've missed you all!

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

I have missed all of you! I've had an interesting week off from work and away from home.

Monday, May 12
My husband and I drove to Pigeon Forge. We had rented a gorgeous cabin called Black Bear Lodge. It was clean and beautiful, but it didn't have local TV channels and the fireplace didn't work. We had a great time anyway. We spent entirely too much time shopping! We bought coasters and Pfaltzgraff Tea Rose dishes. I also got new tennis shoes.

We returned home on Friday and had a busy weekend. On Saturday, we mowed my mother's yard and then came home and painted my son's old room. We had dinner with my husband's family for his birthday and then I cleaned the carpet. My son's old room is to be my husband's new office! On Sunday, the carpet was dry and my husband moved in a few things. But, he has a lot of stuff, so it will take a while. We went out to eat at Red Robin on Sunday, my husband's 53rd birthday. I got the Garden Burger and it was delicious!

On Monday, I had to wait for a dryer repairman and then do a whole week's worth of laundry. It would have been overwhelming if I had also had my older son's laundry. Today, I walked in our neighborhood while listening to brisk walking music. It was fun!

Tonight, we are going to Skids with my younger son for dinner. We are enjoying spending time with him before he moves out on June 9.

I've started my new life...

Sunday, May 11, 2008

My mother-in-law told me that when my sons move out, I should start my new life and ENJOY it! She is right, so I have started my new life and let my sons go. I am happy! After all, they are only moving 30 minutes away.

My older son moved out on Friday. He totally shocked me by bringing home a Siberian Husky puppy on Thursday night. I couldn't believe that he would want to get a puppy in the middle of moving. We had told him that he couldn't get a pet while living at our house because I took care of his dog and ferret and he was very unreliable about caring for them. So, I was completely shocked to see this puppy. He is very cute! However, Thursday night was very, very bad.

Tornadoes struck our area, so it was tense all evening watching the weather. My son's new puppy bit the wire grate on his cage door and got his teeth hung and couldn't get loose. He was screaming in pain. My husband and son took the front off the cage and got him loose, but it damaged his teeth. Poor puppy! Then, when we went to bed, the puppy began howling like his heart was broken. They didn't tell me until the next day, but he had been with his sister at the pet store, so no wonder he was crying. He missed his sister! I felt so sorry for the puppy. My son stayed up with him most of the night and his brother helped. A friend who spent the night even helped. Everyone tried to console the puppy, but he was miserable and so were we. Nobody got very much sleep.

We had taken off work on Friday to help our son move. So, we loaded one of our CRVs with a few boxes that my son already had packed. My son wanted us to wait until he signed the lease and ate breakfast with his friends and then he was coming back home. So, we took apart the sleeper couch in our living room that he was taking. Then, he called saying that he had forgotten his check book. So, we took his checks to him so that he could pay for his apartment and complete the paperwork. We unloaded the boxes and took them up three flights of stairs to our son's apartment. Whew! I thought I was in good shape until I carried heavy boxes up three flights. My husband and I made a total of 5 trips. We put the couch together and then came home. We were exhausted!

On Saturday, we drove to my mother's house and mowed her yard. We got home and did a few chores and cleaned my son's room. We put together the two new chairs that we bought to replace the couch ($177 each at Target). I love them! Then it was time to cook dinner for my son's family. It was my brother-in-law's 49th birthday, so I cooked his favorite: cubed steak, gravy, rice, and biscuits. We had a nice dinner. My son who had moved came with his puppy and things were going much better with the puppy. I could tell that he and the puppy had bonded. He named his new puppy Tako.

Today (Sunday), my husband cooked lunch for our mothers. We had steak, baked potatoes, salad, and Texas Toast. We had carrot cake for dessert. My younger son had to work. My older son called and said he might come and then didn't show up. We had fun anyway!

Tomorrow, my husband and I are leaving for a few days of vacation. I'm already packed! I won't have Internet access for the next week. My younger son will take care of the cats while we are gone. I am really looking forward to getting away. We will try to come back early on Friday to mow my mother's yard and our yard so that we can spend Saturday painting my son's room and moving my husband's office upstairs.

Poor puppy dog. Hope his teeth are ok! The first night Gorgeous moved in, there was lots of whining and barking and growling (the CAT was the one growling, believe it or not)... no sleep was achieved. Next night I was so exhausted I granted everyone's wish to sleep in bed with me. No whining, no barking, no growling (the CAT was still mad though :-D) and everyone slept!

Anyway, yay for part 2 of your life! You've earned it! You did all that you were supposed to do as a MOM and now you're getting rewarded by getting to reclaim your life! hurrah!

Enjoy - you deserve it! You're such an awesome person, Sheila!

I got tired just READING your blog!

When we sell a pup, we send along a piece of the bedding that they lay on. It has the smells of their littermates or of mom on it. I buy old stuffed animals from rummage sales and put a windup clock in them. Just cheapies. they snuggle against it and hear a "heartbeat".

Enjoy every minute of that well earned vacation and have fun redecorating when you get home.

Looking forward to time off...

Monday, May 05, 2008

I am really looking forward to having a few days off from work. I have only taken one vacation day this year! I will be off Friday and then next week too.

On Friday, we are going to help our older son move to his new apartment. I was sad about him moving and then I cooked lunch for my sons and moms on Sunday and he was grumpy. He was almost mean to me and said that the cubed steak was nasty. Normally, I would be angry, but this felt like a sign to me. It is time for him to move out. It is time for him to grow up. It is time for us to have his room! So, I shopped online today for furniture. We don't have a lot to spend, but we will need a small dining set for our breakfast nook after we move our dining furniture to the dining room. We will also need a couple of chairs for the living room since we are giving our couch to my older son. Our house is small and that really helps to keep our furniture costs down. In four more days, I won't have to do my son's laundry, put up his dishes, or grocery shop for him. My husband and I will each have our own offices and we will be able to park in the driveway! Yay!

I took my cat, Mickey, to the vet today for a recheck. He had a mast cell tumor removed from his head in February. He is doing well and doesn't have to go back to the vet until August. I didn't get my exercise in this morning, but I should make it up on Friday when I help my son to move...

Yeah, I agree with Dee. Of course boys are so macho they just can't admit they're gonna be lost without mom! I think you're doing well! Hugs, Calen~

I wouldn't be surprised if his 'grumpiness' isn't his own emotions dealing with mixed feelings about all the changes. I have a feeling you will enjoy your 'new' house once the boys are gone. And I'll bet you still get to see and hear from them often.

Good luck, and happy decorating. Hugs, Dee

It is going to take him some time to adjust to actually doing for himself. Don't be surprised when he shows up with dirty clothes for a visit. My sisters son did that and out of habit the first three times she washed them . His visits always coincided with her days off. LOL

You are going to LOVE LOVE LOVE having more room. Enjoy every inch of it.

Nice Weekend...

Sunday, May 04, 2008

I am having a great weekend. I have been happy and relaxed.

Yesterday, my husband and I mowed my mother's yard. With both of us mowing, it only took two hours, so we had time to relax and talk to my mother. I enjoy spending time with her so much! We came home and I sprayed our weeds with Round Up. That stuff really works! I went to buy hanging ferns for our front porch, but they were $14 apiece and I'm just not paying that much for them.

Today, my mother and mother-in-law are coming over for lunch. I can't wait! We are having cubed steak, brown gravy, brown rice, vegetables, and a healthy graham cracker/pudding/cool whip dessert with oreo bites on top. I browned the cubed steak and put it into the crock pot early this morning so that it will be tender. I'm hoping that one day, we will be able to eat on the deck using the new tile table/chairs that we bought. Maybe today will be the first Sunday this year without rain and with a temperature in the 70s.

Later this afternoon, we are going to Lowe's and Home Depot to check out a dining room light fixture and pick up ferns for the front porch.

Have a great Sunday, friends!
