Run report

Monday, May 07, 2012

So it has been a while since I last wrote a blog. Things had been pretty busy with graduation looming and trying to finish my internship hours. All done and all that. :)

I did find the time to log in pretty regularly and track some meals. I did manage to track almost all of my workouts. However, I did run into a few things that bothered me. Sparkpeople's cardio tracker only gives you points for every FIVE minutes of cardio. What if I run for 64 minutes instead of 65? I want my runs to be accurate by time and calories burned. I only credit for 60, so what about the other four minutes? What if I run for 64 minutes three times a week? That's TWELVE minutes that I don't get credit for. I suppose I could TRY to run four minutes faster but that is much easier said than done. I will ask SP if I am being cheated out of points. I'm kind of weird in the fact that if I can't track it or count it, then why bother?

I ran my first 12K yesterday (time was 1:42). Here are tips that I learned.

1) Bear in mind that your pace will NOT be the same as when you run by yourself. There will be others in your way, and it will slow you down.

2) Clip your toe nails before the race. Some of mine kept catching and pulling the nail up. Not painful but I was worried that my nail would rip off.

3) Wear light colored clothing. Reflective is even better.

4) This last one is for guys. Don't forget to bring two small band-aids. Enough said.

That's all for today.

If I wanted the points I would sort of calculate the difference myself - like doing 64 min one day and 32 another - would register 60 minutes the first day and 35 the other and still have one minute "saved". It sounds like you are not that lid back about it bu if the calorie count is the most important that follows the minutes - itīs "just" that you donīt get spark points for it (coming to think of it I have not checked, the other day I noticed that walking faster did not give as many spent calories as the same amount of minutes as a lowers pace... weird!

I use this web sites calculator-

http://www.exrx.
net/Calculators/WalkRunMETs.htm
l

I find it more accurate then SP's , and then I manually enter the calories and time/ which allows you to enter a description of the activity, in this description area I put the exact time and miles etc.. I'm not too worried about points- that's just me.

Continued Running Success!

My honest take has been that SparkPeople's fitness tracker has lots of little quirks, but tends to average out okay. Worst case, round up yourself one or two of those days and then you won't mind it rounding down the other for you. (And just because we don't get points for minutes shouldn't mean the calorie count is short.)

Ultimately, though, if you're getting 12 bonus minutes of exercise, that's GOOD. It allows for the times we didn't really burn as much as it calculated or ate slightly more than was logged or even just a smidge more burn toward our goals.

Thoughts for today

Thursday, March 29, 2012

So I don't know how to describe how I am doing. I do continue to get leaner and stronger but . . . .

I wish I could write something uplifting to go along with, but I am not really feeling it. I have a run scheduled some time today and odds are that I will probably get 'er done. My heart is not in it, though. Typically, I feel good afterwards, so I have to trust that I will today.

I have been feeling discouraged and uncertain in other areas of my life, most notably professionally and medically. I don't what my future will be when I graduate. I will have to start selling myself to prospective employers. That's not so easy to do when you have a lot of negative self talk going on.

The news about the degenerative arthritis really is gnawing at me. I continue to fight the flab but wonder if I am only rearranging the deck chairs on my own personal Titanic. Maybe this will be my last chance to look and feel good. Sorry for being such a downer, everyone.

I sure do hope that I figure this all out.

The negative self-talk is such a bummer... I try not to gor there but as soon as I let the guard down it takes over. I wonder if it is possible to get a change where I donīt have to fight it so much!

Fighting for your health and wellness is ALWAYS a worthy cause! Regardless of how your arthritis progresses, the outcome is going to be SO much better with fewer pounds!

I know some days are less inspired than others...been there, done that...DOING that...but locking in those good habits and putting one foot ahead of the other still offers such benefits.

Hang in there,

Don

I know what you mean about uncertainties - it can be hard to look forward past them because they muddy the future.

In terms of positive thoughts, you ARE graduating. You have learned what you've gone to school for. You have been able to, in your personal life, set goals and work toward them and overcome obstacles. That is all part of what you have to offer prospective employers.

As to "rearranging the deck chairs on my own personal Titanic", weight can be a negative factor in degenerative arthritis. Unlike those deck chairs, giving up on fighting the flab would have a direct effect on your quality of life. At least for me personally, when I can't control one aspect of my life, that makes me really want to control the aspects that I can. You can't get rid of the arthritis, but you can implement the changes needed to deal with it best. You can't guarantee an employer will hire you, but you can control how you convey yourself on application, resume, and in an interview.

I don't blame you for being worried with an uncertain future and a family to support. Valid concerns!

In the meantime though I think you are doing EXCELLENT in controlling what you can control - your health. You may have degenerative arthritis, but you are not letting it stop you from your journey towards healthy living. Your heart is not into today's workout, but you are getting it done anyway. I mean, WOW! With a will like that, you won't let abstract adversities take you away from snagging that job after you graduate.

Every time you act, you inspire not only us, but I hope yourself as well.

Awkward times

Thursday, March 22, 2012

Well, I continue to exercise and eat right . . .

I am running 3 times a week, come rain or shine. I try to get every rep of ST that I can push out.

I found the reason for my chronic back pain was due to arthritis in my spine. Glad to know it was not something more serious. It still sucks because I realize that this is a condition I will have to deal with for the rest of my life. My doc offered me PT to help but the stuff they would have me do is the same stuff I am doing on my own.

I am starting to get comments regarding my weight loss and I have noticed that some times women are flirting with me. My basic response is confusion at the surrealism of it. Trying to find things to wear is difficult as some of my clothes no longer fit while others just don't fit yet.

It has become apparent to me that I need to get a better support network in place. I am out here on my own most of the time or so it seems.

That's all for today.

Good deal on those pounds lost and toning up! And yes, support is important during times of change.

You might want to consider a few rounds of PT, just in case they can teach you a few moves that might be new to you and add to your arsenal of back defense moves!

Finding out you have arthritis is a downer, but it sounds like you are doing what you can to keep the arthritis at bay. So many do suffer from this, but staying active and losing excess weight helps so much. Reach out for support...we are here to help you and lots have been in your position.
I know it's hard to buy "in between" clothing because you know you'll soon be out of them...but maybe just one new pair of pants might be in order. Have you ever looked at used clothing? On my way down, i got several pairs of jeans at at Goodwill. Wore them for about a month, lost more weight and donated them right back. I now lots of women's clothing has some elastic in the waist but I don't think much men's clothing ever does. Nice sweats might work, too...you'll look great. BTW, just enjoy the flirting...you've always been this adorable person on the inside and now others are seeing it on the outside!

Aww, what a bummer about the arthritis emoticon I hope you will be able to keep the flares down.

Awesome on the comments! In addition to weight loss, I think eating right/better + exercising just does something to a person's glow. I know you're surprised at the attention, but I'm sure the better feeling you have about yourself is pretty obvious too.

At any rate, enjoy it! You deserve the extra attention.

P.S. If you need support, you've got it here! It can be really hard to get it offline, I know. In this time around on SP, I made a conscious decision to not tell anyone about my weight loss except for SP. (I think my enthusiasm in the past drove people away or attracted others to sabotage) What happened was "meeting" a bunch of people who "get" me and my healthy living goals (i.e. only Sparkers understand my fear about falling off the wagon and how to handle binging). But then it just seemed like me focusing on my goals inspired people in my real life to jump on the healthy bandwagon. Can't still understand it, but whatever! Anyway, to end a rambling paragraph, just shout and we will be there.

Yesterday I tried to wear my favorite jeans, but I am just not there yet....however I was able to wear a pair of bell bottoms that I couldn't wear 2 months ago!

And I am known for writing blogs about wearing sweats, stretchy pants and "fancy sweats" as my usual attire.

I am so sorry to hear about the arthritis in your spine! That totally stinks sparkler- I hope those sticky heating pads bring some relief to you from time to time. I hear Shaq wears them.

5K run, no wait . . .

Monday, March 12, 2012

So I turned 42 over the weekend. Having been training for three weeks for a 5K, I saw on the Active.com website that one coincided with my birthday weekend. I signed up for my wife and myself.

Back in 2010, we ran a 5K in just under 36 minutes. Yesterday, I was running and became concerned at 50 minutes. I was not paying attention to many of the mile markers because it was raining, and cold, and my glasses were fogging up pretty badly. I just figured, "Well, you ARE two years older and you are sort of out of shape. Deal with it and finish strong."

I ran until just near the finish line and sprinted half a track to finish in just over an hour. I walked for a little, grabbed some water and waited for my wife to finish. She came up after about ten minutes and informed me that it was FIVE MILES, not 5K. I said no way.

While she was going around the track, I asked an official. Yes, indeed. Five miles it was or about 8K. I felt silly but with a real sense of accomplishment. Not too shabby for 5 miles. I used to run like that in the Army on a regular basis.

I became aware of two things after the race. First, I will not plan anything else on the day of a longer race. I was exhausted and irritable afterward. I plan on resting after a longer race from now on.

Second, I am a bit peeved about something. SP fitness tracker considers a 13 minute mile to be walking. I did walk for brief periods but the majority was easily jogging/running. I call it running.

That's all for today.

    FIVE miles?! Way to go!

May people are unhappy that SP refers 13 MM to walking. I have to agree with them; even at my absolute fittest, there is absolutely no way I can walk 13MM!

Well anyway, we know that you ran it. Be proud! 5 miles is a wonderful accomplishment.
