Week 10 of the Biggest Loser Fall Challenge...

I was supposed to write a blog last week for my 6 month Sparkaversary and having lost over 40 pounds in 6 months-- YAYYYY! I also wanted to do pictures and blah blah blah... but things have been crazy for me for the past few weeks so I didn't get to do that.

I do however need to get on here for my Lemon Team challenge for the week :) Here is the challenge:

So here is my stuff from week one.. lemme review:

1. I keep having to switch or adjust medication for thyroid. Hopefully this time I am done with that!
********I have been on the same medication and dose now for 1.5 months.. let's hope it stays the same!********

2. Lack of sleep from insomnia
********Blah... I have gotten better.. but not great. Hey.. I will take better over worse anyday :) ********

3. Not exercising first thing in the morning.. putting it off til later
********I did okay on this half of the time.. I still need to improve********

4. Lack of planning
********I did okay on planning .. but I did not do okay on the execution of those plans********

5. Eating over my calories on some days
********Guilty... still did that on some days ********

Reflecting.. What is the thing I will be working on for this Fall Challenge.

-----I want to focus on getting my exercise done first thing in the morning.

I only lost 9.2 pounds during this 10 week challenge. I know I am retaining water right now but oh well :) This was a super tough 10 weeks for me.. I am pleased that I lost weight at all. My goal was to lose 15 pounds during the challenge and I didn't meet my goal. I will keep fighting!!

I am happy to see that even when I am struggling I don't give up. Even if I do slow down from time to time.. I keep moving. If I have a bad day I don't give up.. If I have a bad week or several bad weeks.. I WILL NOT GIVE UP. I can't. I have to do this.
Over the past 10 weeks in this challenge I exercised an average of 6.6 hrs a week!! yay!!! I beat my exercise time from the 10 week Summer Challenge!

Moving on from here I have to step it up with the weight loss. I am happy with 40+ pounds gone in the past 26 weeks.. but I know I could have done better.

Next stop.. I want to be below 245 pounds by my birthday in February... I WOULD LOVE TO BE BELOW 240 POUNDS BY THEN!!!!!!!!!

MSMOSTIMPROVED also has a birthday in February-- HEY GIRL :) She put up a little bday challenge to me. We are both going to take birthday pictures in red dresses... so I gotta get busy so I can look all cute! Well I will try to look all cute.. lol.

Miss my spark friends.. I am not avoiding you guys on purpose.. I promise :) Don't stop fighting!!! We can do this.

    I, too, have taken the word ONLY out of the equations. You did FANTASTIC! Every pound gone is a reason to smile and jump for joy. I have lost 23 pounds since I began on Jan. 1.     You ONLY lost 9.2 pounds? That's about a pound a week average and that is GREAT!! Weight lost slowly, through positive lifestyle changes STAYS lost longer so you are golden!! I smiled at this "I did okay on planning .. but I did not do okay on the execution of those plans*" - I often have that problem too!

I'm sorry to hear that you are still having issues with insomnia. May I make a suggestion? Why not blog about it and the steps you have taken to help it? Perhaps some of your friends will have positive suggestions? Its something I've struggled with a lot and I'll be happy to share any insight I can give you!!

    Only lost 9.2 pounds in 10 weeks! That is practically one pound a week. You should be celebrating not saying "only". It has taken me almost a year to lose the over 40 pounds that you lost in just 6 months. Another reason you should celebrate. Take a few glasses off those lemons and make lemonade and then toast your victories! emoticon emoticon

Heyyy!!! I want to say thank you to everyone who has left supportive comments, messages, and goodies for me about the Dirty Girl Mud Run 5k and Obstacle Course. I want to personally thank everyone as soon as possible :)


Some of you have asked for me to share my race experience and some pictures with you... well here it is!!!

A few days ago I posted a blog showing what I decided to wear to the race. When my sister saw my outfit she liked it so much she decided for her and her daughter to dress with batman stuff.. then she invited her friend and she wore batman stuff, too. It turned out really cute :)

The night before the race my sister wanted us to get together and take some pictures before we were all covered in mud. I had a hard time choosing pictures for this blog because my other niece took TONS AND TONS of pictures lol. It was so sweet of her :)

Here are some pictures of us acting silly the night before the race:

I went to sleep... well i tried to go to sleep. I was so excited and nervous that I was only able to get 3.5 hrs of sleep in. I woke up at 4 AM to get up and get ready for the race.

Here I am SUPER sleepy on the way to the race over 2 hours away.

My sister and I were both TOMming so we weren't feeling good... but we weren't goin to let that stop us!!!

We arrive at the race!

We had to walk 3/4 of a mile from the car to the race .. at least it helped us warm up a lil bit :) Racers are to arrive at the race at least 90 minutes before your race wave is set to leave the finish line. There were a total of 24 race waves. A new set of runners left the start line every 15 minutes. We were in the 10:45 am race wave.

Around 48 degrees F. We are about to get all wet and muddy!

I just received my race number and pinned it on my shirt!! It's almost time :)

When we checked in we received a Dirty Girl Mud Run T-shirt and charm.. YAY!

After checking in we went to turn in our gym bags with towels, clean clothes, clean shoes, etc...

HERE IS THE DREADED BACK VIEW PICTURE-- I can't wait until my back doesn't look like that anymore!

Now we watch a few race waves take off from the start line, walk around a bit, and look for cute costumes. We try our best to stay warm.. but we still freeze while

Here is a group that had big fake booties... SO HILARIOUS!!! They were in our wave so when we could watch them when they went over obstacles with their big fake booties and it was so fun to see!

Here was a cute group called BOO-BEEZ :)

Here is a guy who ran dressed up as a girl... I didn't think they allowed boys but here's one! He was with group of girls all dressed the way he is dressed. We asked if he was really running the race and he said, "yes."

AGGHHHHH... It is almost time for the race to start!!!!!

We head to the start line where a man stands up on a podium and tries to get us pumped for our race! The music comes on... the song is, "I'm sexy and I know it." We are all dancing and jumping up and down for several minutes before our countdown begins. I am with my little group in the middle of our wave. We begin to countdown.. then WE'RE OFF!!!!

Here I am at about a 1/4 of a mile in... STILL JOGGING .. I haven't stopped to walk yet.. and I am STILL SMILING!!! I have had people pass me.. but I have also passed some other people!! Many people are already walking and I am still jogging.. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! AND SMILING.. YAY!!!!!!

After that point my niece who was running after us trying to get pictures couldn't continue on the rest of the course.. she would meet back up with us at the finish line :)

The course had 11 obstacles total. We crawled through mud. We climbed up hills. I couldn't do the tall vertical wall climb.. I had to go over the little bitty one.. but that is ok.. I will get it next time! I did try though. I jogged often through the race.. sometimes even passing my sister, niece, and her friend!

The obstacle that I wanted so badly to defeat-- I DID IT!!! I don't have picture of me doing it... but here is what it looks like.

When I came down the net climb I noticed that people who had already completed the obstacle were waiting at the bottom watching me... seeing if I could do it.. when I got to the bottom many people clapped for me.. I almost started bawling crying. Great.. now I am crying thinking about it..oh well :) My sister was down there waiting for me too and she was so proud of me. It meant so much to me because she was so mean to me growing up ...teasing me for being fat. We didn't have a relationship until I was in my 20's.. and for years she has apologized to me for the way she used to treat me. Seeing how proud of me she was.... really really made my heart soar.

After the net climb we had to crawl through the lake and mud under ropes.. we were getting close to the finish! Surprisingly because we were so cold.. the water didn't even feel that cold.

Just typing this blog up is making me want to cry with tears of joy...

running to the finish.......more muddy water... gotta get to that finish!!!!


super excited!!!!!

GOING THROUGH THE FINISH LINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I DID IT :) I was the biggest person that I saw racing from 9 AM until 1 PM.... I don't know if there were any racers bigger than I was. I know I was the largest person in my wave. I know it wasn't a competition.. but it was a competition with myself. I did not finish last and I was able to keep up with my sister, niece, and her friend.. and sometimes I even passed them. I can not wait to see what I can do in the future. I pushed myself.. and I even surprised myself. I faced my fears of social anxiety.. I faced my fears of being on display... I can not believe how many fears I faced that day.

For once I did not care if people were looking at me.. I didn't care if some of them were judging me.. I didn't care if other racers had a problem with me.. I didn't care if all of the people on the sidelines were staring at me.. I didn't care if my fat was bouncing all over the place.. . I DIDN'T CARE.... this was my moment and I was IN THE MOMENT! No one was going to steal that from me!

I FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WOOHOO :)

After the race it took about an hour to get our bags.. get some of the mud off and change clothes.. and then start heading back to the car. We were exhausted and frozen.. it took us a LONNNNGGG time to walk that 3/4 mile back to the car.. but we did it with smiles on our faces :)

I thought of my spark friends.. I thought of my Lemon girls... I took you all through that course with me :) Thanks so much -- to all of you who support me and believe in me.

    You are amazing. I have never felt so much pride in reading about another Spark members achievement. You ROCK!!!.
It's one thing to get out and run a clean 5K , but you did an obstacle course run and in the mud. WOW!!
You and your team looked so cute , Some of those other teams did too, , like fake booties , where did they get those?? What a laugh.

I am looking forward to the Dirty Girl Mud Run 5K and Obstacle Course this Saturday!!! Here's what I am wearing to the mud run :) I will be thinking of all of my spark friends while I am on the course!!! I took a few pictures to send to my husband while he is in Florida working. I can see that i am getting smaller.. Yay!!! Please don't look at my horrible eyebrows I need an eyebrow wax STAT! I am so excited YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

    You Look cute. Hope thats an outfit that either washes up real well or you can just toss it at the end.
We have an "Detroit Lake Mud Run" on Oct. 13th. Me and a few of my friends are planing to give it a try.
I am not one to get too dirty, doing this on a dare. Trying to figure out how to clean up once over so we can get back into the car. No one wants to get the inside of their car dirty. Ha!!
They say everyone who participates can expect to be slathered in mud by the end. We have seven age divisions and prizes for the top three in each category.
Where is you race being held?

About 8 weeks ago I decided to start charting the following things on a spreadsheet:

-Daily Deficit I create as shown by Spark People
-Daily Deficit I create as shown by Body Media (Body Bugg)
-How much those two differ
-How much those weekly deficit totals project I should lose each week
-How much I actually lose or GAIN each week

Well.. I must say that I am pleased with my little experiment. Spark People and Body Media are VERY VERY close to each other in their CALORIES BURNED ESTIMATIONS.

In fact...
Over a period of a little over 8 weeks the weight loss that Spark People's total deficits projected I would have lost and the weight loss that Body Media's total deficits projected I would lose were only .9 lbs different. That is less than a pound of difference that the two sources projected I would lose.

My actual loss from a little over 8 weeks was 10.8 lbs.

Not impressive, I know... BUT... as far as my little experiment went I am very impressed because of how CLOSE both Spark People and Body Media were at letting me know how much I would lose by how much work I had put in over the past 8 weeks.

No... Spark People and Body Media don't TELL me how much I am going to lose.. I have to do a little math to figure that out. That is where my spreadsheet comes in handy.

Of course we also have to take into consideration water weight fluctuations and what not. Which is why I thought it best to monitor these numbers over a period of 8 weeks as opposed to just 2 or 3 weeks.

I was using the deficit system before this 8 weeks to lose weight.. but it wasn't until recently that I started to document my deficit numbers daily to see how I was doing over time.

As most of us know 1 POUND is approximately 3,500 calories... so to lose 1 POUND we need to create a deficit of 3,500 calories with diet and exercise.

My goal over the past 8 weeks was to create a weekly deficit of at least 7,000 calories for 2 pounds lost a week. I didn't accomplish this every week. With the way things have been going I am really pleased that I lost weight at all!

Below you can see how I did every week. You can also see how much my weight fluctuated from week to week. This was from changes in medication, lack of sleep, water retention, etc. But-- you can see that over time the deficits in the end do in fact match the weight loss over time.

If I had a positive deficit at the end of each week that is great... especially if it was at or above 7,000. Even if it was over 3,500 for the week that is still good for a 1 pound loss.

Week 4 and week 7 were horrible.. yuck!

So, what have I learned from this?

-You get out what you put in
-Losing weight is not rocket science
-If I want to lose more I have to create bigger deficits
-I can see the weeks that I had the worst sleep I ate more
-What we do one week may not show that week on the scale
-One day of bad eating can cause water retention for several days
-Weighing in from Sunday to Sunday shows more gains than weighing in from Wednesday to Wednesday... My weekend food must be really high in sodium WHOOPS.


Now I know not everyone likes to lose weight by watching their deficits ... I am not pushing my plan on anyone else. We all have to find what works for us.


I also wanted to post my spreadsheet so that those of you who want to know how accurate Spark People estimates calorie burn... I can say from my little experiment that they are VERY close in estimation to my Body Media device.

I don't count regular every day cleaning or walking at the grocery store or things like that on my fitness tracker.. Here's why. Spark People already takes your BMI and multiplies it by 1.2 to estimate for the little things we already do everyday.

If you want to see what Spark People shows your daily deficit as... hold your mouse over MY TRACKERS until the pull down menu shows up. Then click REPORTS. Select DAILY CALORIE DIFFERENTIAL.

To lose 1 pound a week you want to create a 3,500 calorie differential or deficit every week. For 2 pounds lost you want 7,000 and so forth. So I use those reports and put my number on my spreadsheet everyday... Then I go to my Body Media and put in those numbers on my spread sheet everyday.. and voila-- I can see how I am doing.

Of course my weekly deficit or differential won't be EXACT. I may over estimate or underestimate calories I ate at one meal. I try to weigh and measure most of my food but there are those times when we can do our best at guessing.

Overall.. I am happy with how my little project turned out. I am not really happy about my weight loss-- I wanted more. I am happy that my weight loss was so close to what Spark People and Body Media projected.


Sooooo on Wednesday I started the Fall Challenge for the Biggest Loser Lemon Team.. WOOHOO
GO LEMONS!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a 10 week challenge. I will be using my spreadsheet and shooting for at least 7,000 calories a week in deficits. I will be exercising at least 6 hours a week. At least 2 hours Strength Training a week. At least 4 hours a week of Cardio. Those are my goals.





1. I keep having to switch or adjust medication for thyroid. Hopefully this time I am done with that!

2. Lack of sleep from insomnia

3. Not exercising first thing in the morning.. putting it off til later

4. Lack of planning

5. Eating over my calories on some days

Reflecting.. What is the thing I will be working on for this Fall Challenge.

-----I want to focus on getting my exercise done first thing in the morning.


So I have a high weight of 330+ pounds .. not sure how high it got.. I didn't have a scale then.
My highest documented weight after starting to eat right and exercise was 323 pounds.
I started Spark People on April 27th, 2012 @ 310 pounds.
I am now in the 270's.
260's HERE I COME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have so much catching up to do on Spark. I hope to catch up with all of you very soon!

You are doing something right, because you are right. Numbers do not lie and your numbers my friend are going down! I would LOVE to lose 10lbs~~ that is quite a bit of weight emoticon emoticon

We both wear body media~~ and I checked spark. They are comparable to what I am to burn daily. Which brings me to my question. I burn more than my daily target, typically, and always have a daily deficit. So, why am I not losing weight?? I can't figure it out!

    You are sparking the charts!! That rocks... I kind of let that part just happen. I just try to stay within the calorie range and document carbs protein and fat.
Adjusting my calories to match my exercise has been an experience. My thing lately is reading about strength training and recovery rate. I am really trying to put my energy into reading the outcomes of my efforts.

    I was just reading over your page. I'm glad to know I don't need to go buy an expensive body bug or something similar as Sparks is close enough! I hope you get your thyroid issues under control. Has it been really hard to adjust to being diagnosed a diabetic? I had gestational diabetes during my pregnancy and it stunk. There is NO time like the present to get with it! Enjoy the BLC! How you documented the calories in/calories out really lays it all out in practical terms. Gives a lot to think about -- especially when the excuses for why it can't possibly work out creep in (and we know that's not true, but this makes it all the more concrete).

  I love the BodyMedia Fit....I also follow the Calorie consumed pie chart to show my daily consumption of Fat, Protein and Carbs.....I follow the 45% Carb, 35% Protein and 25% Fat ratio for my tracking and I find it cuts down on the big fluctuations and drinking 12 glasses of water a day helps tremendously. Try it if you have a chance. I am full blown menopause at 49 and my metabolic rate is quite slow and sleeping 5.5 hours a night but what I have learned is that it is the quality ie.85% sleep efficiency of sleep not the quantity that makes the difference.

    Your weight loss is awesome. I would definitely call nearly 11 lbs in 8 weeks a huge success. I love your geekiness with the spreadsheet, number crunching, analytical stuff. I'm that way too. I've wondered about the SparkPeople calories burned also, so I purchase a heart monitor. Some of my workouts are pretty much spot on with SP, while others are about 10% less than what SP tells me. Of course this is mostly due to the intensity of the workout since SP can't really tell how much effort you're putting in. A HRM is the best bet but SP is a decent estimation.

    Way to go!! 10.8 pounds is wonderful!! You are losing this weight FOREVER. So losing at this rate means just that. You know it's not water weight or something that will easily creep back.

I love your experiment! I have heard many different opinions on how Spark differs from various tools. But I think what you are saying here is the important thing. It is not rocket science. The basics are the basics no matter the tool you use to get there.

    Ten pounds in 2 months is a fantastic weight loss congratulations! To put it in perspective, it took me 3 months to lose 12 pounds. I am older so it is slower. I just concentrate on the end result not how long it takes. After all, none of our weight came on in a day. So give yourself a great big pat on the back. Biggest Loser Summer Challenge 10 week review...

In this blog I will show what my goals were for the challenge and how I have done. I have really enjoyed being on the Lemon Team. It is a group of very supportive people. I was so happy when I was invited to become a co-leader for the team. YAY :) I am looking forward to our Fall Challenge. GO LEMONS!!!!!!!!!!!

So here were my goals for the challenge:

I really wanted my cardio and strength training minutes to be more for week 10 but I am still pleased.

It is strange because on my Wednesday weekly weigh-ins I never had a gain.... but on my weekly Sunday weigh-ins on my spark page I have some gains. That shows you how much our weights fluctuate throughout the week.. CRAZY!

Maybe I should just weigh in on Wednesdays... lol


So my overall feeling about the challenge. I feel that if my sleep was better that I would have done better on the challenge. I am still proud of myself ... The past couple of months have been super stressful.

    Come on over to weigh in Wed so I have someone to hold hands with on Tuesday in prayer! LOL! 1st of all, you have shown real dedication and commitment to the Lemons just based on your log- I have no idea what you lemon peppers are up to but, it must be good. Next, don't fret because getting kids involved on a regular basis is no easy feat. Last but not least, YOU ARE MOVING TOWARD YOUR GOAL!

    Awesome!! Wow!! You definitely earned every pound lost!! You can definitely do it :) Yea I am lucky I found my perfect day to weigh in, was always Sunday.. I have tried different days just to see, but I always seem lighter on Sunday mornings, lol! I think you should definitely change, if you see more of a loss on a certain day.
