I went shopping with a friend on Friday, a size ZERO friend, and actually enjoyed myself.
I was kind of dreading it but thinking it would be nice to get out of the house, maybe buy some accessories or shoes...
I mean, the last time I went shopping with this friend just after Christmas NOTHING seemed to fit. If I tried on a sweater and it didn't look awful I bought it in 2 colors. After 2 whole days of shopping I managed 4 sweaters (2 styles in 2 colors), several pieces of jewelry, and a pair of shoes. I must have tried on clothes in the largest size available in at least 15 - 20 stores.... I bought everything that I COULD wear. Nothing looked good.... The only fun thing was the time out with a friend.
So when she invited me out shopping I expected the same. I mean, it's not like I've lost much weight, right?
So I added it up, for the first time since December, and realized, hey wait, I've lost TWENTY POUNDS since the last time we went shopping. The scale doesn't move much for me, so I never feel like I'm losing as much as I'm working for. It honestly hadn't occured to me that it added up to twenty, no matter how gradual the accumulation.
While that put a bit of a spring in my step, th enext negative thought hit me. But I'm wearing the exact same jeans today that I wore last time we went shopping. Clearly nothing has changed.
But you know what? That's not true either! When I wore the same jeans after xmas they were TIGHT. So tight, in fact, that while I could, through very creative maneuvers, force the button closed, there was no way I could breathe or pee or walk around with a muffin top that intense. I shopped that day with a hair tie looped through the button loop, pulled through itself, and then looped around the button of my jeans. And, to state the obvious, hair ties are stretchy. Using a hair tie like that (I just measured) gave me an extra 4-6 inches of room in the waist of my pants depending on how much it was stretched out.
Not only did I use the hair tie, I hadn't dried those jeans in the dryer in MONTHS. They'd been hung up to dry every time I'd washed them.
But on Friday, those jeans were FRESH and warm from the dryer (and dried completely! No damp waistband cheatiness!). I slipped them on easily, buttoned and zipped and wore them confidently without a muffin top.
So, despite all my negative talk AND my response pep talks to myself, I was surprised.
Things I tried on FIT. And I don't mean I COULD wear them, I mean they looked the way they were intended to. Sure, it was typically still in the largest size available, but the largest size available at a store like The Limited isn't exactly, you know, large (even if it says XL!).
I actually got to pick out clothes based on whether or not they were flattering rather than whether or not I could put them on!
I didn't get much, a cute light summer sweater and a fun top in a pretty jewel tone. I mean, no matter how good it feels to actually BE this size instead of just wearing it, it's only temporary, right?
I'm off to RIPPED!! I'm going to ATTEMPT to bump up from 5lb to 6lb weights for the first time today. The goal I set months ago was to move up to 6lb (I started at 2 in December and am now at 5!) as of June 1st, so if I can do it today it's still TECHNICALLY early!

And the difference iiiiisssss
not having to talk to my boss?
avoidance of people so annoying I dub them things like 'crazy duck lady'"?
Probably a little bit of all of the above!
My staycation was lovely, and, surprising even myself, I did not even ONCE go over my calories. I skipped NO workouts. I didn't end up fitting in much extra... but hey, ANY extra feels like quite the accomplishment!!!
I finished it up yesterday with the perfect finale: 8 straight hours of reading a good book cover to cover!
So I'm back sparkies!!! And ready to go catch up on some buddy blogs!

Just wanted to stop by and tell all my sparkbudies I'm doing great!!
You wouldn't think a staycation would have me so busy, but I've sure felt that way!!
And proud. I've been spending a lot of time at home alone, near the kitchen, and still doing great on calories. Even at the ballpark on Tuesday I did great!
And I'm still fitting in all of my regular exercise. Nothing extra yet, but I'm hoping to remedy that in just a moment. I'm going to finish typing this, sign off, then do a turbo dvd workout before meeting friends for lunch!
Promise to find time to catch up with what's going on with all of you soon!

I don't know if I mentioned it already or not, but I have decided to take a staycation this week.
I have a ton of vacation time saved up at work and just really needed some space from that place. My job requires me to have a lot of patience with some very high maitenance and self-centered people, and my fuse was getting REALLY short... so I decided to just give myself some relaxing time at home!!
My initial plan was to take a "Biggest Loser" staycation and try and spend 5 or 6 hours a day in the gym like they can. I'm motivated enough to do that right now, and it seemed like a GREAT way to destress myself, but life is just too exciting!!
I hardly ever get 2 days off in a row with dear bf, (I have weekends off and he has sun/mon) so there was no way I was going to spend 5-6 hours yesterday there. I'm happy to report that I DID still go to my turbo jam class at the gym though! I wore my weighted gloves for the second time and while it was still super challenging it was decidedly easier than last week using them.
Today I get to go to a baseball game for work!! Sure, it's a work event, but it's a fun one. People from several stations like the one I work at in CA are getting together with people from a npo called Zero Divide that works toward fair and affordable broadband access to network and have a good time up in SF at the Giant's game!!
So I wont be able to go to RIPPED tonight, but I don't mind. I'm carpooling with 3 other young people (I typically work wtih all men my fathers age), 2 of them are even female, from the station in the next county north of ours. None of them are from this area originally, so I was pleasantly surprised when they all jumped at the opportunity to leave early, take public transit into the city, and walk the last couple of miles to the ballpark (it's a gorgeous walk along the ocean in San Francisco)!! So I'll get in at least a 2 mile walk later (4 if the game ends early enough to walk back to BART instead of taking a lightrail), and am all dressed up in my work out clothes as we speak! I'm just waiting for my breakfast to digest a bit and then I plan to do both the cardio workout and the sculpting workout from my Turbo dvd's before I get ready to go. I plan on having a very light lunch so that I can treat myself to something fun for dinner in the city!
Tomorrow I have auntie day in the evening, but since I have the day off work I'll have time to go to the 12:15 zumba class! I don't like that one near as much as my evening classes, but I'm feeling really positive about fitting in extra exercise this week and staying on calories despite so much extra time at home.
Thursday and Friday I don't have any plans, so I can do 'Biggest Loser" amounts of time in the gym if I decide that's what I want to do!

Last night was double gym night, and this time I didn't get lightheaded or woozy at all!!!
I finally had a day with no accidental lack of protein, harder than usual challenges, or food poisoning!! It's so much more FUN when I feel fine!
I took the intern from work with me as my guest. She'd never been to a zumba class before, so we were just chatting sweatily away about it in between classes while we set up our stations for the next class.... and before I knew it some dude was yelling at us in a funny accent!!!
I was SO confused.
Normally the second class is lead by this petite older lady who plays 'aerobics' remixes of popular songs... from the early 90's... Sure, the moves in the class are pretty dated, but sometimes the old school is the good school!!!
I decided right away that no amount of joking was going to make this class fun when he was insisting I climb on top of an UPSIDE DOWN bosu with free weights no lighter than 9lb (I usually use 5's, and they're color coded so he totally caught those of us trying to sneak lighter weights).
And who the hell invented this thing called the "happy jack"? If I find him I'd like to kick him square in the face!!! (As soon as my legs aren't too sore to kick that high...). If he kept grinning at us and insisting we were supposed to be happy while doing them in that stupid accent much longer I might have happy jacked him right in his stupid face!!!
Doesn't this guy know how these things work? There's supposed to be sections! I don't like all this "stand up and jump around like an idiot." "Lay down and do this weird torture maneuver I've developed, given a stupid name, and insist is a core exercise." "Now stand up and do weights." "Now lay on the bosu and do these other weird weight things." I was not a fan of all this up and down, up and down. I'm so accustomed to classes were we do cardio, then weights, then floor exercises. Normally once I'm down, I'm down until it's over!
Hard feelings during the class aside, once it was all over I decided that I liked it and he was actually pretty funny...
