The Training Begins - In Honor of 4/15/13

Thursday, April 18, 2013

So, I've always been one of those gals that said "I am not a runner". I have slowly worked my way up to running a 5k, but I've had no desire or a good reason to go any further.

Until last Monday.

I watched the Boston Marathon on TV and then saw the horrible tragedy unfold. emoticon My heart broke into a million pieces. And then...I got angry. I was angry at those who have no respect for life. Cowards who attack the innocent from dark corners and then slink away.

So, it is for the innocent victims that I find a reason to begin my training. Those fighting for their lives in Boston hospitals, those mourning the loss of loved ones and those having to start their lives again.

I am not a runner. But I will run a marathon. I will begin training in defiance of those who think they have power over us. I will run for Boston. emoticon

I am training for the Disney Princess Half Marathon 2014. I am following the Galloway run-walk-run method. It's GREAT! I can't wait for the race. I am 36 & am just now beginning to run. Never thought I could do it, but I am! Did my first 5k a couple of wks ago. Never thought I'd run a mile let alone 3.1. 13.1 here I come! Good luck to you! It's a great journey.

You can do it! I've only run a half marathon, but I tell you what, it was about the hardest thing I have physically and mentally done: I mean, running for 2.25 HOURS (not to mention more!!) takes some serious strength. When I kept thinking back to how I felt when I crossed the finish line, then added to that to the horror that awaited those runners that day....there just aren't words.

I just started running and recently managed to run my first 5K and really had no plans to go farther, but only to work on improving my time at that distance. In fact, my first 5K was on April 17th, and there was some talk about the event being canceled, (this was before it was announced that they knew who had done it), but in the end, it wasn't cancelled and we went and ran and thought about those who had run in Boston. It was important to go and to run and not to let cowards like that affect our lives by making us afraid.

Your blog really makes me think about maybe trying to do the same. You may have inspired me to go further than I thought I could (or should at my age). We'll see.... emoticon

It was our turn to host a Zumbathon this time! Despite some electrical issues and misplaced raffle tickets, we had an awesome time and raised money for a great cause!
