Gym Adventures - YMCA addition

So I am the person that would much rather diet than work out but I really want to enjoy being active and I know I need to get in shape to do that. Anywho, I have been wanting to join a gym for awhile. I work in Downtown Minneapolis and live in the Uptown area so there are a lot of options. When searching the web I realized that a lot of Gyms have free trials, no money down. Well even if I decide I can't afford it I may as well go for free and get some exercise that way. I made a plan to go to all of the gyms in the area that offer the free trial. That way maybe I will start liking it and feel the money is justified.

For starters I am doing the YMCA. (The free trial is listed on thier national website, so maybe one in your area will give you a free trial, check it out www.ymca.net .) YMCA gives you 3 times (to use within 10 days). They take you for a tour and then give you the pass. Membership for adult is $60, however most insurance companies will pay $20 a month if you go 12 times... So that = only $40 a month! I also found out that the regular $150 joiners fee is also covered by my ins. company Medica, so yours may cover it too,

I went last night, had my gym bag with me, cause I wanted to get on this right away. I got the tour and the staff member asked if I was planning on working out tonight. I told her yes, she gave me the pass and said that we wont punch it for tonight then (so I actually get to go 4 times instead of 3). YMCA was nice enough, I mean its a Gym... I can't really see myself taking any classes, but maybe when I am more fit.

Okay so I really haven't been to a gym in a long time. When did the treadmills get Ipod hook ups and cable tv's connected.? It was awesome! I listened to my ipod which i could see the playlist on the treadmill screen and at the same time watched VH1 on mute with CC. They really want you to go to the gym! A few of the other pieces of equiptment had it too, but it made me not want to venture past the treadmill.

Again being that I havent been to a gym in a long time, I forgot about locker rooms. It was bad enough in high school... but here grown woman must love walking around buck naked. I know part of it is that I am insecure with my body but also there is only one person that I want to see me naked and he isnt in the womens locker room.

I had such a good time, I made myself get out of bed early and go before work today. It was an energetic start to the day. Only downside was I was a tad late to work, it took longer to shower and blow dry than I expected. I didn't even know they would have blow dryers or hair gel.

So I have 2 more times at the Y which I plan on using next week Tuesday and Wednesday. I think YWCA will be next, just so I can finally understand the difference.

    Yay for the YMCA! I'm actually a BodyPump instructor there... downtown Saint Paul. I love it! I teach Friday and Sunday evenings now... hopefully adding a form class to help with good form. :) If you decide to try Pump and have any questions, please feel free to ask! And talk to your instructor, too... we LOVE questions and talking to people! emoticon

    Just stopping by from Minneapolis 2010! I belong to the Y in Elk River and practically live there! It actually IS fun to stay at the YMCA!

Good for you in trying it out! Classes will be next, I thought the very same thing but when you find out that you can burn DOUBLE what you burn on the treadmill, you may try it. Plus, it is way more fun!

    Way to get up and boost yourself for the day! Im still working on the "working out" part of it but you sound like you could get into a great routine!!! Way to go again, stay motivated and find those free trials! They are pretty awesome!

i'm not sure how many gyms are around you but most, if not all, will give you a free week pass to test out their facilities like the ymca did. i once read an article that feeling comfortable with the people and enviornment you work out in is very important into keeping you motivated. also, try to use your free pass at the times when you would normally try to go each day so you can see how busy it is.

Fast Food Chains - Shame on you!

Okay now this is out of control. No matter how many healthy options there are, fast food chains keep coming up with over the top creations.

See the link below and look at the 910 calories for Taco Bell's Chicken Ranch Taco Salad. Why would you even create something like that? 910 calories is too much for anyone and then you tell us its a salad?

    I agree with you - there should be some limits put on them. At least they will soon be required to post the calories in each item - maybe that will be a wake up call to some people, for what they put into their bodies. Just the thought of something like that sitting in my stomach gives me a stomach ache. But each to his own in the end, I suppose.

    Hmmmm sure looks good, but not good for your body. You are right too much of calories for that little thing. Eventually you get hungry again...cause weight gain. It is rare that I go to the fast food places. One time I was hungry and did not plan my food. So I bought fish sandwich w/no tartar sauce just lettuce and had one piece of bun. emoticon
