One Week Later

Sunday, March 07, 2010

Well, my sugar dropped to 115 for the first time in a week yesterday (ideal level is 100, but 115 beats the 429 reading a week ago). I am now more aware of what I need to do to maintain steady health. I was a bit nervous that I wouldn't be able to achieve my goals without the oral medication; but as long as I inject insulin at least once per day and follow a solid diet and exercise regiman, I will be able to maintain. My doctor told me a year ago that he would be able to reduce (or even eliminate) medication if I could lose 50 pounds --so this is my primary goal this year. Will keep you posted!!!

It's so sad that I don't have insurance, but maybe this is a blessing in disguise. I need to wean myself from medication and start eating the right way to avoid the HIGH COST of medication. Holistic is the new way to go. I've always been an anti-pill popper but felt that the doctor knew best -- however, I always thought that there's something not quite right when you have to take 8-10 pills a day (from 4 different types of meds not including the low dose aspirin and vitamins). I am taking the baby steps towards good health today in order to avoid the nasty (high cost) consequences of tomorrow!! Do you feel me?

It's Now or Never

I have Type 2 Diabetes and HBP (ranging around 148/100). My weight hovers between 293 and 296. If I don't do something about this now, I fear that I will be dead within the year. Yes, DEAD! It finally took the fear of dying too soon to take matters into my own hands.

I stopped taking medication about one month ago. I am uninsured and cannot afford to see a doctor (at $295 a visit), the lab fees (over $800), nor the prescriptions at $300 per month. In a nutshell: I stopped testing, I stopped taking oral medication and lantus!! I was in denial. I felt that "mind control" would work -- what a fool I've been! I suddenly began to have uncontrollable thirst and began running to the bathroom every hour. I knew something was wrong. When I finally decided to test again 3 days ago, my glucose reading was 492!!! Ouch. My average for the last 10 readings: 320!

So I use 50-70 units of my son's lantus (who by the way is insured). I injected 55 units at 8 a.m. and at 9 a.m., my sugar was still high at 275. I have no other choice than to watch what I eat and to exercise. I've stopped eating carbs (or at least as much as I'm able), eat less processed foods (i.e., I use natural fruits and veges when cooking) and stick with no sugar added ingredients.

I finally decided to walk today; there is, after all a huge park with 1.25 miles of walking trails and 18 exercise stations right outside my front door. Before walking at 12:05 p.m., my glucose reading was 305 (two hours after eating breakfast which consisted of a low-carb-wrap of two scrambled eggs with sauteed diced onions and red pepper, a tablespoon or two of xtra sharp cheddar cheese, and 2 slices of bacon). Now at 1:10 p.m. my reading is:: 262! There must be some truth to this exercise thing -- I dropped 43 points in an hour!

I'll keep you posted to see if my little experiment will work. If you don't hear from me for a while (i.e., months), then I might have moved on to "the other side".

Please keep at it. You have a son who needs you. I won't lie and tell you it will be easy to do this without your medications, but with strong willpower and a lot of faith, you CAN do it. Please check with the American Diabetes Association and see if they can give you some help with your meds. I know there is help out there for people with diabetes. If I can find something more specific, I will let you know.
