Exercise, hot & muggy and no A/C do not mix!

Monday, August 06, 2012

Yeah...it's hot here in Oregon for all you people who (mistakenly) think that all it does is rain here. Even my dog, Molly, doesn't want to move (and she is a terrier with Parsons Russell in her) and just gives me the stink eye when I take her out. I try to take her in the early morning and then again around 6 because at least the sun is (mostly) setting. But unlike most other places in the US, the hottest part of the day here is actually around 3 to 5. Horrible! So, for her sake (and, admittedly, my own), she waits. She has a bladder like a rubbery balloon--able to stretch for hours and hours...and no accidents. Not even a dribble. Wish I could say the same for myself!

So, where I was walking about 90 minutes a day, it has decreased to about 30 or 45 minutes, if I can hold out. I get to come home to a very hot loft. Got an overhead fan going and a double fan in the window, but they are just blowing a lot of hot air around. I find if I don't move around too much and sit in the "sweet spot" on the sofa, I can tolerate it. Bleh! I don't like this weather one bit.

On an even more pathetic note, despite my diligence in tracking my food and water and activity and keeping on the straight and narrow in all areas, I have not lost anything but that pound and a half which I could not record because I posted my beginning weight at a pound and a half lower than I thought it was. Silly me. So, my little butterfly has not flown one centimeter. The lazy slug.

Well, chins up and all that. Keep calm and carry on! Hope you are all having a better week than I am!

At least the summer is about half-way over now.......hopefully after Labor Day things may improve (it's been my experience where I'm from, anyhow).......

Hang in there - at least you did make a positive effort......so many of us just wilt away and give up, but you didn't!

It's all in the planning...

Thursday, August 02, 2012

Today, I had a planning meeting for our little church's women's ministry. We planned all the way out to July, 2013. There were only two of us and it took a while for our motors to get running, but at the end of two and a half hours, a lot was accomplished.

We both agreed: We can't bring the women in, but we can let them know we care by planning some thoughtful and fun events for them! That's the way it is with changing the way I eat. Spark provides the tools I need to plan an entire day's meals for the next day. I can go through all that planning and use up all the fresh produce and other good things in my cupboard and refrigerator but, ultimately, it's up to me to follow it. It's up to me to make sure I check the list in the morning and start the day off with a decent breakfast.

Walking is my exercise of choice, but I'd like to do some sculpting. I had a disc replaced in my neck and they discovered I have degenerative arthritis in my neck. Because of the disc rupturing before surgery, I lost about 30% of the strength in my left arm...my strongest arm. I am right-handed, but for some reason, my left arm is (was) so much stronger. Because of the nature of the injury, the arthritis, the nerve damage and the loss of strength, I was told by my therapist I cannot lift weights over my head, but I can do other exercises to build up some strength again. So I bought a Reebok step today to get some good cardio as well as some scuplting in and I have stretch bands and some good exercises for that, too.

In December, I am hoping to go to Israel and Egypt. Oh no! I can hear people saying (because that's what my friends are saying). That is such a dangerous place! But I am not worried about that at all. Hey, I am of the mind that if it's my turn to go, i can be sitting at my computer and the LORD can take me. He is not a respecter of persons and has no boundary He can't cross. I will be there over Christmas, so I am really excited about that. Hope it all works out. At any rate, I want to be in the best shape possible so that I can do all the walking and hiking. I'm thinking the food over there will be insanely good--lots of fresh veggies and fruits and nuts!

So now I have a goal...not just weight loss either. A prize, if you will, at the end of the journey!

Can't wait to get there!

I love it when meetings are productive . . . sounds like your group has a very good plan for the future. Good for you!

You are so right when you say it's all in the plan. I got close to my weight lose goal a couple years ago when I found SP and but in the couple years since then have found myself needing a "restart". Too much eating out and failure to track. I'm charged up again and have gotten all my tools of success out (food scale, log book till I can put it in the tracker, etc.) so I'm "on it". Feels good. Need to take care of my "temple".

Thanks for sharing, have a wonderful day new GF . . . emoticon emoticon Jan

Start of a new week...

Tuesday, July 31, 2012

...and overdid the carbs the first day of it! Well, once in a while, it's going to happen, so I'm okay with it. Did a lot of stuff today and was very active so, hopefully, I burned it off. I weighed myself this morning and lost a pound and a half, but I started my beginning weight at the wrong weight, so it didn't change my ticker. Maybe next week my butterfly will start moving!

I'm not sure about anyone else, but the nutritional page takes me forever to tweak. I don't like to cook, especially every day, so I do a lot of substituting in order to plan my day's food. Tomorrow, however, I am going to the beach for the day and that is so hard. I will have to stick to a salad and maybe some fish for lunch, if I can, but you never know what they are doing back in those kitchens! I'll be doing a lot of walking on the beach and around town so I hope that will help.

hey the beach sounds like fun! I of course would have to tote a 55 gallon drum of sunscreen with me! Just do your best, not everyday can be perfect, but if you are mindful of what you are eating, it all works to the good.

End of fifth day...

Friday, July 27, 2012

....and have not lost anything yet. But I can tell my core is getting stronger and that I am losing inches. I don't get too obsessed about a number, but I know it's supposed to doing something!! emoticon I don't weigh every day, but was curious. It's only been 5 days, so it's okay.

Hey, here's a real bonus for me. I really don't like to cook and I just figured out that I don't mind it so much when I don't have to cook meat. Meat is so messy to prepare and to clean up. I don't mind chopping the vegetables or fruit or concocting some recipe. I also feel a little more bold about trying new recipes or substituting within a recipe. That's kind of new for me. Even at 59, I still stick to recipes pretty much. Not very adventurous when it comes to cooking.

I gave myself a break on the walking today in that I didn't speed walk. I still will be walking 90 minutes, but not as fast. Molly seems to be on a low burner today as well. That's kind of funny. We're both on the same wavelength, it seems. Just chillin'.

Have a good night! emoticon

End of fourth day...

Friday, July 27, 2012

...and really surprised that I am not missing meat more. I mean, I was a serious carnivore and I rarely ate fruit. Admittedly, as I have said, it's hard to find protein substitutes, though I am researching that more. I'm sure there are tons out there. Added skim milk to the diet today. I don't typically do well with milk as it tends to irritate my esophagus and trigger spasms, but so far, so good.

Had a super busy day today, but still got up early and walked for an hour. It's really beautiful in Oregon right now, but I may have to change my exercise of choice to rebounding (I have a mini-trampoline) once it starts raining. I don't mind walking in the rain (after all, I HAVE to walk Molly no matter the weather), but the sidewalks get slick here when it rains. I've almost fallen many times. It's like there's liquid detergent in the rain!

Sauteed chopped onion and snow pea pods today in 1 tsp. of olive oil and then put them over basmati rice (1 cup). Yummy! Also, the Laughing Cow (Light) cheese with apple slices is really a treat. Loved it! Had it for lunch with some Wheat Thins (low fat). In order to get all these fruits and, especially all these veggies in, I have to eat about every 2 hours. I hope that's a good thing! I've read it's good to keep fueling the body...like stoking an engine on a train. Gotta keep feeding it to keep the train moving fast.

I hope everyone had a great day today and is enjoying their summer.

Nighty Night!
