My thyroid gland stopped functioning while I was pregnant with my 3rd child. God blessed me with a doctor that caught it and put me on the recommended product - Synthroid. I have always been a high-energy individual, working out several hours every day, working at least one 40 hour per week job with energy remaining to volunteer and keep a clean home. Now I was tired all the time, my hair falling out, dry skin, depressed and going from a size 1 to a size 14 in just a few months. The Endocrinologist refused to put me on the natural Thyroid that my grandmothers both took - Armour. I went from doctor to doctor to find someone who would at least test me on the tried and true, old fashioned Armour - natural Thyroid. After 2 years, I found a doctor who would test the product with my body chemistry and it was like the world was new again.
Fast forward 10 years and I developed a brain tumor that filled my 3rd and 4th ventricles and wound down my spine - herniating my 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th discs in my neck. Once again, I was sent to the best neurologist in Iowa. Although I was in constant pain, could no longer drive, work, school my children, etc... he wanted to watch it and see how it would progress. My husband and I were discouraged with the useless doctors in our state. I called Mayo Clinic in Rochester and told them my situation. Within 3 days, I was given an appointment and after going through all their tests was given an amazing surgeon who removed the tumor successfully and by the Grace of God, I was given back my life again.
Fast forward 7 more years, I visited my family practitioner and he 'freaked out' when he saw something with his examination. He called the best surgeon he knew in Iowa to see me. She saw me immediately and few days later I went under the knife. I spent 10 days in the hospital and was not progressing well, but the surgeon gave in to my pleadings to send me home with the assurance that we would continue my care from home. I did not improve and this time I asked my Family Practitioner to refer me to Mayo - what I should have done initially. By the end of 2010, I had the 2nd surgery. The 2nd surgery gave me some improvement, but I now know that this is my new normal. I put on 60 pounds in only 4 months on a mostly liquid diet.
I new that I had to take control of my weight. I no longer can exercise but I knew that there would be a calorie set point at which I could lose weight. My set point at which I can lose weight is around 500 calories per day - amazingly low! I have lost 10 pounds every month - June, July, August, September, October - at which point I've gotten stuck. I know in time I will lose the remaining 12 pounds that I want to lose, no matter what it takes.
This is my new normal.
