Knee Sugery Update

Thursday, August 05, 2010

My knee surgery was yesterday and the doctor repaired two places where the meniscus was torn. He also said there were signs of wear and will probably have to have a knee replacement in 10-15 years.

I had a rough time last night. I couldn't keep anything down and I was very lightheaded. The last pain med (Vicodin) I took was at 6:15 pm. I woke up at 1:00am drank some water and promptly threw it up. Since I wasn't hurting I decided not to take the Vicodin. At 4:00 am after I had dry heaves I took Compazine for nausea and Ecotrin for my splitting headache. I decided I wasn't going to take Vicodin again since I wasn't hurting and both Vicodin and Compazine side effects was dizziness. This morning I took some Motrin for my headache since that is the only thing hurting right now. I was able to keep down some jello.

I am still pretty exhausted - I think I will go lay down now. I just wanted to get an update to all my wonderful SparkFriends! Thank you for your prayers

Bless your heart --- I will be praying that you just get better and better with each passing minute --- and that the Lord will give you comfort and healing -- He is always with us. Nausea is a common part of the after effects of surgery --- but should pass quickly --- hopefully the worst is behind you. Glad you didn't overdo the Vicodin -- it's powerful stuff, but if you don't need it for the pain, you're better off w/o it --- you go girl --- sounds like you've got a handle on it now --- we women are such strong beings, aren't we?!?

You take care and rest --- you deserve a little R&R!

Blessings --

Canning & House Guests

Wednesday, July 28, 2010

The last 3 days I have spent canning apricots. The yield = 14 qts, 37 pts jam. I made plain apricot jam, apricot blueberry, apricot raspberry and Splenda apricot, Splenda Apricot Blueberry jam. I was on my feet solid for 3 days. My feet and knee are killing me. I plan on soaking my feet tonight in a vanilla foot bath!

Last night instead of going to bed early, I ended up cleaning house and making beds until 12:00 (started at 10:30). The mission team from Stand True (the mission organization my daughter went with at the beginning of the summer) came in at 3:00AM. They originally were going to be here Tues evening, then changed to Wed mid-morning. I was going to clean etc Wed am, but their plans changed and they called late Tues night and said they would be driving though and get to our house at 4:00am. I was able to go to bed and sleep-- my daughter woke up for them and showed them their rooms.

It is fun to be able to get to know the people she served with.

Because of all these things I haven't been able to do my oxycise the last couple of days, but I am glad to report that I lost .75 pounds last night at TOPS weigh-in!! I am not sure how much exercise I will get this next week, because Stand True is here until Sun, then I will be picking peaches from Dad's tree and have to get them worked up before my surgery next week.

I do know, however, I will get a 2 mile walk in on Saturday as the Colorado Christian Women Spark Team is meeting at my house for a hike and picnic. I'm excited to meet some Spark Friends!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't forget to count the housecleaning and any other active activity as exercise. It's not just formal routines that count.

Hope your knee and feet recover before the next big push. You've been busy! Glad you're finding some fun things in life to focus on. Congrats on the weight loss!

OldMom3 reminded us a week or so ago that standing burns more calories than sitting, so Carrie, I think all your canning is helping you reach your goals! I hope the week goes well and am glad you got to bed before 4 AM!! Enjoy meeting your daughter's teammates! Be sure to rest your knee when you need to! Jodi was asking about jam-making w/ sugar substitutes -- maybe you are the resource she needs! Hope the foot soak was relaxing and refreshing!! See you Saturday!

Still Packing

Sunday, July 25, 2010

Yesterday (Sat) I was up at 4:00 am , got ready and headed to my father's house. When I got there just before 7:00 everyone was still sleeping. So, I started picking apricots on the first tree. Finished that around 8:00. By then, my two other sisters had arrived and everybody was waking up. So, from 8:00-3:00, we worked on sorting, packing and cleaning Dad's bedroom and bathroom. Also, we picked the other apricot tree. I also cleaned out Dad's chest freezer and brought home raspberries, blueberries and blackberries dated 2000-2008. So, guess what I will be doing this week?? Yep, canning! I need to have it done by Tues, because I have houseguests coming Tues night.

Oh...and now I am off to head back up to Dad's to help my sister pack. Even though they still are still having bitter feelings (and struggling with hateful thoughts as my sister said), I want to show them that I love them and let Christ's love shine through me. And this is one way I can...since I will be unable to help them move this week.

I am staying focused on my eating and exercising. I can do the Oxycise Commuter routine in the car! Plus, carrying boxes etc is good weight training emoticon

MRI Results

Tuesday, July 20, 2010

Well I saw my primary doctor yesterday. The MRI confirmed his diagnosis of a torn meniscus. I saw the orthopedic surgeon today. He said that not only do I have a torn meniscus, but some wear and tear on the cartilage on the patella next to the thigh bone. Also, the tendon on the inner side of the knee is strained, probably because of the way I have been walking favoring my knee.

The surgery is scheduled for Wed, Aug 4. I am going to stay consistent and focused on eating healthy and doing what exercise I can.

Also, an update on dad's house - his renter backed out, so there is not the stress of having to move him out by the 31st. I still don't know what will happen there, but with my surgery coming up I won't be able to do anything.

Glad your surgery is scheduled, and hope they can do wonders! I hope they give you good PT afterward, so a professional can help you strength the knee as you recover!

Also glad the urgency on Dad's house is gone -- and that you'll be out of the process!

Enjoy this weekend - see you next Saturday!

Rollercoaster Starting Again

Tuesday, July 13, 2010

Well, the saga continues/starts up again. My dad gave notice to my sister and her family to be out of his house by July 31 because he has it rented as of Aug 1. Plus, his new wife gave notice to her landlord and they will be moving to a new rental house by Aug 1. Sounds complicated??? Therefore, we have 2.5 weeks to help them move out, pack up dad's things and move him.

Meanwhile, my sister is angry at all of the family for "siding" with dad. She says they have no means to rent a place. There are things out there - she is just making excuses. I told her I love her and that we will help them as we can. She said she didn't think we did or would.

I having to stay firm yet loving which is hard. I know that the situation she is in is because of the decisions and choices she and her husband has made. My emotions are in a turmoil-- BUT I will NOT let this derail my new start of losing!!!! I am doing well with my plan that I started on July 1st and I am going to continue with God's help.

As a side note - I am going for a MRI this afternoon for my knee, then will see the dr next Monday.

I WILL STAY FOCUSED!

Keep with the plan you know that you must stay focused on you first and your own family. Before less immediate family members.

Tough love is hard. You want to help but don't want to be an enabler. Not sure if you're like me or not in that I'm a fixer. It's hard sometimes to acknowledge that something is God's responsibility and not mine. Don't feel guilty about not doing more for your sister. Sometimes people don't learn because loved ones can't stand to see them uncomfortable and keep jumping in where God would have them keep their fingers out. Am praying for wisdom on what you can and should do and what you need to say "No" to - for your health as well as your sister's long-term good.

Hang in there, Carrie! You're doing so well this week. emoticon
