A Month Later Update

Thursday, December 04, 2014

It has been almost a month since I last blogged and I figure it is time for an update....

I am still fatigued and my motivation has been low and my weight has been slowly creeping up. I did see the naturopath in November. It was a good appointment. But we are waiting for lab tests until I can see my new primary care doctor Dec 17. The doctors will coordinate things, so when the naturopath wants labs he will ask the MD who will order them so that insurance will cover.

The naturopath thinks I might have some adrenal fatigue going on plus low thyroid. He did work up a plan of supplements and gentle exercise. I finally got enough motivation to start back on exercise program with Jessica Smith's #QuickFit Holiday Challenge which started Dec. 1. I have liked it because it is only about 20 min long -- about all I can do right now. Hard to believe I used to do 120 min each day!

I have not allowed my fatigue to interfere with everything. I have so much to do for Christmas! I quilted 12 quilts during November: 3 baby quilts and 1 twin I pieced, quilted and bound. Three were tops I quilted and bound and the other five were ones I just quilted.
I have many other projects I need to make for Christmas gifts.

Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, Fatigued and Frustrated

Friday, November 07, 2014

It's been a week and a half since I last blogged. They have been rough, physically and mentally. I have struggled with fatigue on a daily basis. I didn't exercise for five days and my weight went up. To top it off I was extremely frustrated with my doctor.

I knew something wasn't right. So I called my doctor. It took me two days to finally get through! I asked if I could get a full thyroid panel done before I went in to see him. That way we could discuss the results then instead of me going in for a second visit. I was able to get the bloodwork done the following day. When I got the results a day later - they had only done two of the 5 tests I had asked for. I emailed my doctor asking why. No response.

This last Monday I tried calling - kept getting the office's voice mail. I finally got through on Tues to talk with his nurse. She said because the two tests came in the normal levels they didn't do the other ones. She was rather condescending when I asked some other questions.

I asked if I could make an appointment. She said if I felt the symptoms were severe enough to go ahead. Then she transferred me to the receptionist. I didn't get a person, just the voice mail. I left a message saying I wanted an appointment. Never was returned. I tried calling the next day and still couldn't get through. I'm DONE. I am changing doctors!!

One thing I also did was take my thyroid levels and chart them. Even though they are in the "normal" range they have been going up ever since the doctor changed my dosage in the summer. Don't they even look at that????

In the meantime I have been researching naturopaths and endocrinologists. I have a free phone consultation on Monday with a naturopath doctor. Today I set up an appointment with a new primary care physician. I had seen her about 5 years ago when she was in the same office as my old doctor. She now has her own practice. I liked her and I have a friend who goes to her. The appointment won't be until mid December.

I also checked out a bunch of library books on the Thyroid. I have been reading "Feeling Fat, Fuzzy, and Frazzled? by Richard Shames, MD. So much what he has been saying in the book describes me. I have known for awhile that my hormones have been out of balance, but I have been going along with my old doctor. No longer, I am taking charge of my health now and going to do something!

Because of my mindset this last couple of weeks, my daily goals went out the window. Right now I am concentrating on trying to figure out what is best to get my hormones balanced. My goal is to hopefully have something in place by Thanksgiving even though I won't be able to see my new primary care doctor until December.

However, I did not lose my quit. I went back to exercising on Monday. I decided I couldn't get up an hour early each day to exercise - I do need the sleep and I am getting between 8-9 hours each night. So, I am doing a Jessica Smith Fall Challenge and doing one of her videos each morning before I start to Spark. The daycare kids love doing it with me.

I also have been busy making baby quilts. I have three to finish by Nov 14. I just have to put the border on the third one. I hope to get them quilted tomorrow.

Carrie, there's something "hinky" going on at your old doctor's office and I am totally happy and relieved that you are getting a new doctor!! Sheesh!! I don't know what the problems are at the old place, but I don't care! That is totally awful!!! Unacceptable!! In- conceivable!! And ridiculous!! Wish I had some great advice on how to get your hormones back in check, but I'm clueless that way! BUT.....I am so glad you are back to exercising and I agree that getting your rest is paramount!
Aren't little kids great with the exercise? My DGD always loved doing floor exercises with me, too! hehe
Prayers for you, my friend! For all that is wonderful and healthy!!
Have a great day!! (((HUGS)))

The Thyroid Solution Diet Revolution book

Tuesday, October 28, 2014

Yesterday, I read in The Thyroid Diet Revolution...
"Because intensive exercise can also cause a release of stress hormones, Sisson cautions that, rather than help, it actually contributes to an increased risk of insulin resistance....Aim for moderate activity on a regular basis, but recognize that exhausting yourself with exercise not only isn't likely to help your effort but may actively prevent you from losing weight, by interfering with your hormones and metabolism."

This totally blew my mind. I have exercised like crazy...So has it backfired on me???

I was tired again this morning and didn't get up to exercise. So, I am thinking I might take a short break (a week) from major exercise until I can get my thyroid meds at the sweet spot. I don't know yet what I will do.

I finally got through to the doctor's office and got a lab appointment tomorrow morning. I asked to get the full spectrum of thyroid tests not just one. I probably won't see the doctor until next week since I have my grandkids Thursday - Sunday (their parents 7th anniversary).

Another thing I read in The Thyroid Diet Revolution...
"Important warning: ...High fiber diets can change your dosage requirements..." I started high-fiber (The Full Plate Diet) a couple of weeks ago, so I am cutting back a little on the fiber. I had been trying to have 35-40 grams of fiber, now I am going back down to 25-30 grams. I don't think it affected me too much as I was already experiencing all-day fatigue.

I planned out two baby quilts this morning. Then during naptime I finished the border on the Missouri to Colorado quilt and started cutting fabric for the first baby quilt.

My Daily Goals: Day 36 of 100 - 10/28

1. Track ALL food & exercise emoticon 30/36
2. Drink 8-10 glasses of water (minimum of 64 oz) emoticon 30/36

Often we need to give ourselves some space to recover...

Ok, my friend, I can see where too much exercise per day can be too much, but I am highly suspicious that 30 minutes a day could possibly be too much. Now back when you started your day with 120 minutes of exercise, I thought might be a bit much, but maybe not if you have worked up to it and it didn't exhaust you. Cutting back on the fiber could help esp. since you'd still be getting a healthy amount. Glad you got an appt. for the thyroid panel. It will tell you something! If that's not the culprit, though, keep looking!
You seem to be doing quite well with your quilting! Way to go!
I'm looking forward to hearing how your bloodwork results come out! I'll be praying for you!!
Stay safe and keep Sparking!! (((HUGS)))

I've been debating getting my thyroid level checked early. I may wait til I've read the book to see if the info will help. My next scheduled test is in Dec. But I have been having low thyroid symptoms too lately.
Hope you get to feeling better soon!!

Frustration

Monday, October 27, 2014

My alarm went off this morning and I just didn't feel like getting up and exercising - I was tired. I figured I would try to get 10 minutes in 3x's today. Well, that didn't happen either.

I tried my doctor's office @4 times today, but each time I would just get the voice message. I finally left a message, but never heard back. I know Monday gets extra busy, but I was still frustrated not getting through to them. If I haven't heard anything by mid-morning tomorrow I will try, try again.

I also was frustrated with my weight. I was very sensible on what I ate over the weekend. With the busyness of each day, I only was able to eat two meals. Well, when I weighed this morning I was up 2 pounds from Saturday morning. Even when I am good it doesn't make a difference. Oh well, I am not giving up...just keep plodding along.

At least, I was able to accomplish something today. During naptime, I sewed the blocks together to complete the top of the Missouri to Colorado quilt for my cousin. I still need to put the border on, then I can quilt it. Afterwards, I started ironing all the fabric I bought on Saturday that I had prewashed this morning. Now to plan the baby quilts and start cutting tomorrow.

I understand your frustration in getting in contact with your Dr. I have been trying to get my dh's records since the 2nd week of Sept. and haven't got them yet. I did get our primary dr. to get dh an appointment with another cardiologist though I am still working on getting other cardiologist records. I had tried to call about our concerns for new med they had put dh on and all they would say was that is just to be expected--just keep taking it and dh was feeling worse and worse. Hope you get in touch tomorrow. ((HUGS))

It'll work out, Carrie! I know you are becoming impatient to see the scale move, but stay the course!! I'll bet you'll hear from your doc today and get that thyroid checked again so you can get your med adjusted! You'll wonder what you were all upset about in about a month from now!!
Try and have a great day, sweetie. Fight the tired and don't skip the exercise. As a friend of mine says, we have plenty of time to rest when we're dead. A little grim, but accurate!

Non-Stop Weekend Again

Sunday, October 26, 2014

Well, I didn't do too well on my daily goals this weekend. It was a very packed weekend again.

First thing Saturday morning was my session with my trainer. He upped some weights and was encouraging all the way through it. he worked me hard!

I also had a good talk with him. I have been frustrated because I haven't been losing weight - I have been staying on track with exercise and eating, but the weight hasn't budged -- just playing around with a couple of pounds. Furthermore, one of the things that I have been struggling with is constant fatigue all day long. Many days I have to push myself to get through the day.

He shared that he had a client that was having the same problem and was finally able to get her doctor to adjust her thyroid med to that "sweet spot" and she was able to lose 25 pounds right away. I have had a feeling that my thyroid meds aren't right and have been debating about calling the doctor. After talking with my trainer and then discussing it with my husband, I will be calling my doctor tomorrow to see what we can do. I am tired of being tired!

I have too many projects that need to be done between now and Christmas - I don't have time to be tired.

Saturday afternoon, we went to my pastor's to drop of the kilt and accessories and we ended up talking for almost three hours. We now have some new responsibiliites at church. We will be heading up Children's Ministries and my husband will be creating a new website for the church.

Then we had all our errands to run. One was to stop at Joann's to look for some fabric for three baby quilts I need to make in the next couple of weeks. My husband was such a dear and he even helped find some fabric. Then we saw the clearance section where fabric was marked an additional 50 percent off. He started going through and even pulled some fabric for me with some ideas for Christmas. I had a cart full of fabric bolts. He was such a patient guy - it took awhile at the cutting table!

Sunday was busy. We taught Sunday School, went to lunch with some friends, then to a friend's baptism then home to clean & prepare for Bible Study.

My Daily Goals: Day 33 & 34 of 100 - 10/25 & 10/26

Carrie, are you taking a generic thyroid med? My dh did for years and suddenly his went crazy and the doctor was changing it every couple of months. Finally she asked was he taking generic or real synthroid and when he started with the real thing, it worked. If on a generic, ask your pharmacist if they have changed generic med companies. That was our problem. You will get everything worked out.
