End of the month reflection

Sunday, July 31, 2011

July apparently was not my month.
It never is really.

But with August will come some great changes.
The kids will be back in school.
The kids have decided that they want to ride their bicycles to and from school.
I am not comfortable with their safety in doing this alone ... therefore, I have to either purchase a bike and ride with them .... or walk with them as they ride. Either way ... Beginning the 18th of August ... I'm going to have A LOT more exercise coming my way!!

I want to lose 5-8 pounds in August. That's my goal.
I want to continue on my new whole food healthy eating.
What started out as an experiment has turned into something I really like and think that I could keep up with on a long term basis.

So ... I'm resetting my ticker and changing my dates ... because this is a new me.

The school is a 35 minute walk from our house. We made a dry run the other day to find out if we had to do it with me walking EXACTLY when we needed to leave by. I did the entire thing walking ... instead of walking/jogging ... b/c I didn't want to get myself into a situation where I was relying on my asthma not to act up. If I can jog parts of it, then the kids will get there faster and I will burn more calories ... but I wanted to play it safe.

How far away is the school?
I'm glad all the pieces are falling into place for you!

I peeked

Friday, July 29, 2011

Ok, I will admit it. I couldn't stand the suspense any longer ... and I peeked.
When I started my Meatless Experiment ... I weighed in on Sunday at 182.4 (I didn't change my tracker because it almost made me cry ... it was heavier than when I started June 1st)

Well ... stepped on my scale this morning ... and I saw .... 177.6!!
4.8 pounds in 5 days is not shabby. I can't wait to see where the next 2 days puts me.

I've noticed something interesting with this Meatless Experiment. I'm no longer eating meals. I eat a fruit/vegetable/ or serving of nuts when I'm hungry ... and move on from there.

Another interesting thing that I've noticed ... I'm hitting 99% of my nutrition values. The only one I'm short on is iron. I'm hitting carbs, fats, proteins, fibers, sodium, and calories precisely. And the big bonus ... I'm feeling great.

A huge surprise to me ... a girl raised on the farm ... I don't miss the meat as much as I thought I would. And instead of seeing all the foods I can't eat when I go into my kitchen ... I see a fridge stuffed full and counters overflowing with options. It's a great place to be.

I promised that I would stick with this for a whole week ... and I will.... I definitely will ... but I must admit that at times this week, I was thinking of spaghetti and scrambled eggs and such. So, I'm thinking that after this week, I might modify my approach.

I'm thinking 3 days meatless ... 1 day meat ... 2 days meatless .... 1 day meat in rotation. I'm still thinking about it, so we'll see. But I do know that I'm feeling more energetic, more alert and more in control since I started this little experiment.

Who knew?

More Info on "The Great Meatless Experiment"

Wednesday, July 27, 2011

I have no idea if that title will stick ... but it will for now.

A little more information ....
I find that I'm eating more frequently. So I've decided to divvy up "meals" in this manner:
wake up to 10am --- breakfast
11-1 ---- lunch
2-5 ---- snack
5-bedtime ---- dinner

I'm finding that I'm eating every 1-1/2 --2 hours. But when what you are eating is 35 calories worth of carrots, it doesn't get to be a big deal.

I'm also planning out my next "meal" as I pick up the one I'm about to eat. For instance this morning, when I made my whey protein/peach smoothie (with fresh peaches from the farmer's market) ... I sliced up 2 cups of cucumbers and tossed it with vinegrette for later when I get the munchies. I've been trying to swap off fruit/ veggie as the day goes on, although at "meal times" I try to do 2-3 veggies at a time with a serving of nuts.

We'll see what the scale says at the end of the week.....I'm trying my hardest not to peek.

My new experiment

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

I saw a movie about a guy who ate nothing but fruit/veggie juice and nuts for 60 days. He 84 pounds!!!

I'm not that crazy. I know that there is no way that I can give up the crunch. But I have started looking at just eating fruits, veggies and nuts. Although, I'm also supplementing with protein powders to make sure that my protein intake doesn't suffer too much.

I'm also not planning on going a full 60 days ... I'm thinking of trying it this week and then re-evaluating.

I'm on Day 2 and I'm doing much better than I thought I would. I'm not really missing meat. I'm eating anytime I'm hungry, because fruits/veggies don't have a lot of calories. When you eat when you're hungry ... there's no real "HUNGER PANGS" that toss you at high calorie foods. I'm also lining up my next fruit or veggie ... so when the hunger hits ... I know exactly what I'm eating and don't have to think about it.

Bonus ... no headache the way I had last week. :o)

The movie is "Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead". He juices everything. I tried that and I just couldn't get past the taste. UGH! Nasty!

I'm eating whole fruits/veggies and nuts/peanut butter.
I'm also using whey protein powder and Carnation Instant Breakfast drinks to supplement for added protein. I'm only allowing 1-1/2 servings per day. The bulk is coming from fruits/ veggies/ nuts.
I'm also not so strict with this that I'm not allowing for butter, cheese and casserole cooking methods on my veggies.... although I'm finding that for the most part, I'm eating them raw.

I actually thought it would be harder to give up meat ... but I'm thinking I really like this. I wouldn't be able to get away with this if my husband were home, because he's a BIG MEAT EATER. And I have to admit, I wouldn't have the willpower to watch him eat a steak and not have one of my own.

I'm like ShellieBellie2 in that I have a harder time eating fruit than veggies. Had a veggie dinner last night. I love veggies. But fruit . . . I need to work on eating more of it. Any ideas?

What's the name of the movie? Maybe I'll netflix it. Can't read to read what happens from your experiment.

Focus

Monday, July 25, 2011

I think in the last week, I lost my focus.
I took my eye off of the goal.

But the best thing about being here ...
Every day we have the opportunity to restart and refocus.
And that is what I am doing.
