My sweet hubby came home early today with either food poisoning or a stomach bug, and now I'm lying in bed thinking I'm about to catch it myself any second now. I'm a huge baby - I am TERRIFIED of vomiting. So I'm kind of scared right now and figured writing about it might calm me down.

    I am like you.....I hate throwing up and fortunately I haven't for many years. I have a stupid mental trick I use though and I feel it has stopped the filthy vomit in it's tracks. When I feel like that, I lay down at a 45 degree angle and put a cold wet washrag right around my neck and over my upper chest. I tell myself that nothing is going to get past that point. Laugh at me if you want, but it seems to do the trick. Hope he gets better and you don't come down with it either. Lots of flu-like stuff going around here. Drink lots of fluids!!!

    Deep breath!!! I hope you are A-OK... I am the same way. I ate a mussel on Sunday night that tasted 'off' and I was sure I would be vomiting for days, but I was fine.

Week 1 I lost 3.2 pounds, from 170.0 to 166.8.
Week 2 I lost 1.6 pounds, from 166.8 to 165.2.
Week 3 I lost 1.0 pound, from 165.2 to 164.2.

And now I've finished week 4...

This week I went from 164.2 to 163.4. That's 0.8lb this week.

My self-selected calorie range is 2,050-2,400. Since I have started my 6-week plan I have gone under that range 7 times, and over it 5 times. That includes the past 3 days: I went over my calories the past 3 days in a row. However, I managed to do it with healthy food for the most part, and don't feel too guilty about it.

Here's my weekly calorie intake:
2/19-2/25: Average of 2,110
2/26-3/3: Average of 2,137
3/4-3/10: Average of 2,243
3/11-3/17: Average of 2,261 (today's only partially-tracked day might be factored into this week's total though?)

So...I guess as long as I keep losing I shouldn't fix what isn't broken, and an 0.8lb loss is a loss. But if my weight loss starts stalling I gotta take a hard look at my calorie intake and start doing some tightening up! Right now I allow myself to eat unlimited fruit for snacks and huge quantities of vegetables at dinner. I really hope that can continue because I love the feeling of being full and the emotional calm that comes with knowing I can eat as much as I want.

On a totally different note, what is your favorite kind of running shoe? Have you tried any of the barefoot-esque type shoes, and what is your opinion on them?

I wear Brooks shoes, and love them. I haven't tried the Vibrams, but my brother practically lives in them, runs in them all the time, and loves them.

    Just think... if you can keep this plan up, and keep losing 0.8 pounds a week for the next X months... it ALL ADDS UP! Big losses are easily regained!!! (I am living proof that slow and steady is easier to maintain!!!)

I have the Vibrams too... but there is not enough support in them for me to do anything but walk in. I love them for going on City walks though! I love how people stare at my feet! LOL

    Great work Susan! Weight loss is a slow and at times painfully slow process, especially when you have tasted that mana of skinny. Well, keep up the slow and steady. It lasts longer than drastic does every time, and you crave less I think!

    I don't do well in the minimalist shoe- I have a pair of Vibrams and while I am glad I bought them, I think a person of my stature and the way my feet are- is not meant to run long distance in those. Darcy (runningmami) uses hers almost exclusively now- I think she interchanges between Vibrams and Hiatchi's or some name similar. The V's are totally minimalist types, the second, have a bit of a sole- you could ask her.

I like Mizuno's- actually, I love how Nike's and those new "light" shoes feel like "gloves" on your feet and like feathers when you pick them up, but I like Mizuno's, because they are not TOO comfy, meaning that they provide support, but not too much cushioning, which in my opinion is not good for your feet- I wore Asics Nimbus for awhile and while it felt like running on clouds, I think that I was more prone to shin splits, because my feet were not trained to develop those muslces- right above the feet. That's my experience. I wear Waveriders, but might change it up this summer - we shall see :-)

    Susan, when it comes to weight loss, slow and steady wins the race! I think you're doing great and getting excellent results!

As far as shoes go, I have tried some minimalist-esque shoes and DO NOT like them! I recently read an interesting article about them and the upshot is this.... if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Meaning that if "standard" shoes work for you, stick with them and if they don't, give the mini's a try. OTOH, Larry uses the Vibrams and those are the only shoes he can actually run in. So, give it a try, but don't feel badly if they don't work for you.

Personally, I love the New Balance 759, which I believe is now the New Balance 880 (they changed their numbering scheme).

    Amazing results you are getting. I agree with you....if it's not broke, don't mess with it. You are living a healthy life and making it work. About the running shoes..... can't help you there, but I hope you get some good advice. I'm just here to cheer you on!!!

77 Degrees in March!

I stayed late at work almost every day last week, so today I gave myself the gift of time. I had a meeting at the middle school that ended a bit past 2, stayed afterwards and chatted with the person who has the same job I do only in the sixth grade (I'm fifth), and then I took off for a run on my favorite running route, which I hadn't done since the fall. It starts with a visit to Starbucks so I can change into my running clothes in their large single-person bathroom. :) And also buy an iced coffee (tall - it's PM) so I don't feel bad about using their bathroom without being a customer. :) And then I park my car at the Arnold Arboretum, and run through there, to Jamaica Pond, through Olmstead Park, and back. I think it's about 5 miles in all. Unfortunately my left knee, hip, and even sort of butt cheek were kind of bothering me after the first half hour or so and I stopped to stretch and walk a bit. I hate it that I can't just pop out and run whenever I want - now I have to worry about managing my running-induced pain. Ugh. And I'm such a procrastinator, I haven't seen a doctor or a chiro or even a knowledgeable shoe salesperson yet. But all are on the to-do list. Anyway, the run was so darn pretty I had plenty to distract myself with from the pain. The best part was seeing an ADORABLE husky puppy, all fluffy and black and white with blue eyes! I had to stop and give him a pat. I wish I weren't allergic, I'd get one myself in a second.

Anyway, back in February I blogged about not fitting into most of my work pants. Well now, three weeks and 5-8 pounds lighter (fluctuations), the one pair of gray pants I was wearing to work every day are starting to get a bit big, and I'm solidly back into my black pants. And today, for the first time in several months, I wore the khaki ones. And my husband said they didn't look tight! Yay!

    Great job!! Don't you love getting into ALL of your clothes?! I have one pair of pants that is still waiting on me... but when I get there, I will know I've truly done good...

Jealous of you being able to go run for FIVE MILES! I'm still struggling with that one mile... Sigh. Hope I can really achieve it - in one straight stretch - soon!

That is me cheering for all your NSV's!!!!!! I don't know how you guys can run for so long. It just amazes me. Makes me realize how out of shape I let myself get. Thanks for being an inspiration to me. Keeps me trying a bit harder on the exercise I do get done. Susan, thanks for all the nice comments you make on my blogs. I take them all to heart even if I don't have time to thank you for each one.

Also, I was LOL at your list of gym complaints! My absolute hugest pet peeve is people hogging the benches with towels, cell phones, water bottles, etc and NOT USING THEM! I know the floor is the floor and everything, but really, the water bottle can go on the floor!

Seems like your weight loss challenge is going GREAT!

Things I Don't Get About My Gym

#1 I don't get why I don't see more women in the strength training areas at my gym. Probably the majority of the time, I'm the only chick out there. I'm really loving strength training these days - you know a runner's high, well, I sometimes get like a strength training high! I play songs I like on my iPod, I go as heavy as I can while maintaining good form, and honestly I get a little kick out of being the only one in that part of the gym wearing pink and having a pony tail. :) I have so much energy these days! But maybe I know why there aren't more women in the weight room...which brings me to #2...

#2 I don't get why my gym is set up so badly for strength training for women! In the main strength training area the dumbbells go up by increments of five pounds only. I've never belonged to a gym before where there weren't some dumbbells that were 3 pounds, 8 pounds, and 12 pounds. And people are so messy when they use dumbbells, sometimes the 5s and 10s and 15s that I want are nowhere to be found! Anyway, then there's also a women's only room that is mostly for strength training. Ah, you think, that must be where all the girly-sized dumbbells are. Right? WRONG! You're lucky if you can even find a matching set of ANY sized dumbbells in there. Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration, sometimes... but still. There aren't an abundance of free weights in there. Plus, there is only ONE bench in that room, and it's only a flat one, so if you want to use a weight that only the women's room has and someone's using the bench or you want to have an incline, you're SOL. I guess you could bring your weights out to the other room, but if you can actually find the weights you want and carry them out, you may or may not find an available bench, and who has time for all that... anyway, almost all of the non-multiple-of-five-pound dumbbells are in the studio, and that's because people use them in classes. That's a big part of the reason why I don't see many women in the weight room, I think... classes that use weights (not just Body Pump - other classes too) are really popular at my gym. And those classes are almost all women. So if there's no class going on sometimes I go in the studio to use the tiny dumbbells, but there are no benches - I sometimes set up a step like in Body Pump...and there's also no heavy weights, so I have to go back out to the weight room to use those! Annoying.

#3 I don't get why, when there's only ONE BENCH in the women's only area, some women don't realize they're being incredibly rude when they use that bench as a resting spot for their phone and water bottle! Grrr, stupid women. OK, vent over. :)

#4 Speaking of venting, people who don't wipe off their cardio machine after they're done sweating all over them? Ewwwwww!

#5 I don't get why my gym has free tanning. Shouldn't a gym be a place you go to get healthier? Why include in the membership something that's a known carcinogenic? And judging by the skin color of the people at my gym, quite a few use it.

#6 I don't get why my gym doesn't have more cardio machines. When I first saw people having to wait for a machine around 5-6 P.M. in January I figured it was just the New Years resolution rush...but now it's March and there are still times when every single machine is taken! The treadmills go fastest...they need more of those even though I don't use them much these days... but I also wish they had more of the machines I do use - there are only two stair climber machines and often both are in use and I have to jump on one as soon as someone gets off or risk losing it to someone else...and also, they have absolutely zero of the type of elliptical I really like. But...that has forced me to expand my horizons into other options a bit, so I guess it's ok. And if I really want that other kind of elliptical, I can go to a different nearby branch of my gym.

OK, list over. Oh wait, no it's not. One more thing - on Friday I went to that other branch of my gym and two relatively young women were walking around the locker room absolutely naked, one even put one leg up on a bench while drying off...WTF!? It seems kind of rude to me because when someone is completely naked it's kind of like you can't really go anywhere near them or even look anywhere near them, so they kind of hog up a huge area of the locker room to account for their extra personal space needs.

OK, NOW my rant is over. Believe it or not, I actually love the gym and other than the fact that this weekend went by WAY TOO FAST, I'm in a great mood. I have a ton of energy and was down two extra pounds this morning! Yay!

    I love seeing my red nails peeking out of my weight gloves!
I recently read an article about going up in weights. It suggested that you do as many reps of your set with the higher weight and finishing it out with the previous weight (like if you are going up to 20lb bicep curls with a set of 12, doing 6 with 20 lb and 6 with the 15 lb weight).

  I'm one of those women who only use weights in classes emoticon.

But I do agree that I absolutely HATE seeing women walk around naked in the locker room. It's one thing to change quickly out in the open rather than going to the bathrooms/showers, but it's another to just fully embrace your nakedness as if you were alone.

    I am often the only woman and most definitely the oldest woman in the ST area of my gym. Makes me feel very strong and fit- even using the smaller weights and kettlebells.

    these are all reasons why i hated the gym and just decided that i was not a gym person. i am more apt to workout at home. however i used to have a women's only gym and that was nice because they were more considerate of girl needs and have a full spectrum of stuff.
on a side note, i know that ST is great because you burn significant calories in the workout and then get a major afterburn too-but does resistance training count for this? i really hate doing weights but body resistance stuff is fine and dandy.
p.s. congrats on the energy and the two pounds!

    Um... I don't get the women who prance around the change room completely naked. I agree, there's some etiquette there: use a towel, ladies! And to be so obvious as to put her leg up while being 100% naked, while others are around? She sure has confidence!

I have been prancing around gym change rooms for over 12 years, so I've seen it all.
Some women come out of the shower stall with just their bottom half covered. It's funny how others react to this... it's not like she's trying to pick up other chicks! LMAO I am so jaded by naked women now. Boobs are just boobs. Nothing sexual about them if it's only women around! LOL (Guess I may be naive, but I don't really care!)

Also, you should write a comment card with all your beefs to the gym. Especially the 1 bench in the ladies only area and that all the dumb bells get scooped up for classes... that's not cool!

I can relate to a lot of what you said- we don't have a women's workout area, but at this other gym they do and honestly, I think it's the worst part of the gym- and no real weights are in there. Most men don't want to do workout classes- I am not sure why... except that they think they are too easy or they really know that they'll look wimpy around womean? LOL.

# 4 drives me nuts too! I sometimes I want to yell at the persom, but instead I have come to conclude to always wipe of the machine before I used it ( and after) instead of trusting that someone was smart or considerate enough to do so.

Which brings ms to my simple conclusion: A lot of people are just plain inconsidereate- they don't think how their action/inaction might impact someone around them. It's kind of a like a thoughtless thing, rather than a mean thing, yet annoying nonethless.

Nudity doesn't offend me- unless you're getting too close to me, LMAO! Maybe stare next time to see if they get uncomfortable, hahaha... or just pretend they are wearing clothes?

Halfway done with my six-week plan already?! I started three weeks ago on Feb. 18, for no other reason than I knew I had to sometime. I was 170.0 pounds that day, but my weight had been even higher a few days before, and I didn't fit into my pants, I needed to use my inhaler a lot, and it hurt to run. I was working out regularly and intensely, but I was eating too much.

Week 1 I lost 3.2 pounds, from 170.0 to 166.8.
Week 2 I lost 1.6 pounds, from 166.8 to 165.2.

How'd this week go? Drumroll please....

Week 3 I lost 1.0 pound, from 165.2 to 164.2.


Originally I was hoping to lose 16 pounds in 6 weeks, so that I could just squeak into the healthy BMI range on March 31, the last day of the plan/day my husband turns 30 and has a party. That's 2 and 2/3rds pounds per week. Clearly I am not keeping pace to make that happen. But that's OK...although I do NOT subscribe to the common belief that the slower you lose weight the more likely you are to keep it off, because I have seen that not be true on my very own body, I do know that weight loss is not a race, and while I wait to hit my goal I can at least enjoy being less heavy than I was before. I know I am developing more and more muscle slowly over time, and that muscle is impacting my weight. I know I have lost fat because I can see it in the mirror...although I definitely still have too much!

This week was insanely busy at work and I actually didn't input my calories yesterday or the day before. I am about to do it now. A piece of me thinks why bother, I did OK and the past is the past, but I actually was letting little things slip by maybe subconsciously knowing I wasn't tracking, and I can't let that be habit. For example I had three mini-peanut butter cups at school yesterday, and then I had seconds at dinner at my in-laws. I was worried I'd have a gain this week or no loss actually, after that. I was lucky. But I need to keep tracking to keep the mindset that the little extras count. The "bites, licks and tastes" that Weight Watchers used to call BLTs when I used to go to Weight Watchers. Haha.

    You do deserve a big drum roll. A pound here and a pound there....they really start adding up. You are doing awesome with your eating and your exercise. You're living the healthy life and seeing results. You are right about the pitfalls of slacking on the tracking part. It's way to easy to lose track of what's going in you, so good for you for getting back on track with tracking. Hope your Sunday is extra special and fill it with good healthy choices!!!
