Still on track

Tuesday, November 15, 2011

Today is now my fifth day in a row on track, and I have lost 3 pounds. I love the reversal of all the ickiness I was doing to myself when I was off track...my pants are already fitting better and my skin is clearing up. YAY.

I'm on track!!!

Sunday, November 13, 2011

Right after I wrote my last blog (two days ago), I decided to look back at my nutrition tracker in May 2011, which is a time I remember feeling really confident about my nutrition habits. I saw that I was eating +/- 2,000 calories each day, including batch-cooked lunches AND dinners, and my snacks were almost completely fruits and vegetables, plus one bag of almonds and, most days, a DD or SB coffee or latte. Oh, and on days when I was staying late at the gym, I'd buy oatmeal and nut topping at Starbucks beforehand and count THAT as my dinner, not as an extra snack. May 2011 was the last time I saw any weight in the 140s, and I've actually been slowly but steadily rising since then. Soooo...I'm back to it. Friday was easy because I slept in so late that I didn't really even have time to overeat, and I only ate about 1,550 calories. Last night I went to a friend's for dinner but ate pretty well there and guesstimated a 2,400 calorie total for the day on Saturday. Today I just had lunch, but so far so good! I'm feeling my positive mindset coming back!! Off to rake. :)

Good JOB, Susan!!! Sometimes it's a great tool to look back and remember what worked and try it again! Often times life can lead us far off track!!! It's good to hear you are feeling confident and on track again!!!

Susan, that is so great that your tracker is coming in handy! I do remember that you felt really good then - you felt in control but it was painless!

Also, I am soooooo jealous of 12+ hours of sleep. I thought I was going to be able to sleep in on Sunday but like a dodo, I forgot to unset the alarm!

12+ Hours of Sleep

Friday, November 11, 2011

I've been yawning a lot this week despite getting about 8 hours of sleep per night... and then last night I went to sleep around a quarter to 10 and didn't wake up (well, wake up and actually stay awake) until 10:30 A.M. today. So glad I had a day off - only one of the many reasons I'm thanking the veterans today. We bought our house three months ago, and I really haven't had downtime since - it's always go-go-go with work, exercise, and house stuff. On the weekends my in-laws are always here working on our house. I guess I'm the kind of girl who just needs time to lounge in my pajamas sometimes - and I wasn't getting that! I feel so much better now.

I've been steadily gaining weight in these past three months too....when we bought the house I was in the mid-150s-160ish, and as of today I'm 166. I have been tracking my calories lately and eating in the mid-to-upper 3,000s! You'd think seeing numbers that high - both on my nutrition tracker and on the scale - would entice me to do something about it, but maybe I'm just weary from so many rounds of weight loss and gain. It's very hard to motivate myself to do anything about it.

I did get a happy email today... the group fitness director of my gym emailed me today to let me know that they're adding back-to-back Body Pump classes on Saturday mornings and Monday nights - EXACTLY what I wanted. :)

I love how sometimes just a comment card will actually make a difference. As for the calorie thing- been there before- it's totally mental for me. I still think that it's pretty amazing that you can eat that much and not gain 20 lbs in 2 weeks- that would probably be me... but I also understand the feeling of caring yet not caring- it's a weird feeling. With regards to weight loss, I know that relaxing about it is sometimes necessary, at least for most people. It's too much stress and effort to be all into it and too disappointing to re-gain it. I do think that keeping track and being aware is super important though, at least for me, because the worst for me would be to wake up one morning and be like... how did this happen?
I will say that even though you might have been gaining, you have gained at a much slower rate than in the past and you are still on Sparks, still exercising and still wanting to live a healthy lifestyle- plus, you seem to loose weight pretty easily when you do keep track and eat 2200 or something like that, which is pretty good range, so that's definitely something positive you got going for yourself- for me, that seems to be a lot trickier... ugh. I also need to re-focus, as I've been stuck in the same weight range since June. On one hand, I am happy, because I have not gained weight- wohoo- but one the other hand, I have really not done anything to loose this weight either. I guess all we can do it try- timing sometimes is everything and I think once things settle down a bit or you get a little breathing room, the motivationg might just hit you and you'll get the weight back off!

That is great news about your fitness class! How nice to take a mental "holiday"...I wish! Sometimes we all need that rest to regroup. Honestly, I think that you have quite a bit going on with renovating your new home so it's hard to focus on calories in, I think once things settle down a bit you'll find that motivation (TIME!) to work on it. Don't give up, keep up the good fight!

Woot on the body pump! You know Susan, not to make it sound too easy, but I just want to share with you that since I have changed the "WHY" of what I eat to health, healing, and preventing disease... I have found that eating good for me foods motivating enough. Watch "Forks over Knives" on Netflix if you have it. It is motivating.

I know what you mean about the lack of motivation. I just wish I has some advice.

As for the back to back Body Pump, hopefully that stops the drama. Adults do not need to act like children.

Gym Drama

Sunday, November 06, 2011

For the past few months there have been rumors that my gym was going to close. One day a few weeks ago I was on an elliptical when the electricity suddenly shut off, and I wondered if that was it - the gym was done? But no, they stayed open. I started calling before heading over there every time I went just to be sure they were still open before making the trek...well... ALMOST every time. I didn't bother calling yesterday, but when I got there, I found a "CLOSED" sign on the door! My gym is a Work Out World, and they have another location relatively nearby, so I got back in my car and went to the other location. I had been planning on taking Body Combat at 8:30 and Body Pump at 9:30. Instead I managed almost a half-hour on the treadmill at the other location before Body Pump THERE at 9:30. I saw a big crowd gathering by the studio door starting around 9 A.M., including several regulars I recognized from the other location, but I've never been one to stand by the studio door when I could be using my time more efficiently (treadmill). But I was getting nervous because I know that the studio at this location is MUCH smaller than the studio at the other location, and the crowd was getting huge, so I got off the treadmill a few minutes ahead of time and went over there. I was shocked with what I found: adults acting like cranky children!! The regulars from this gym snapping comments at the regulars from the other gym! The people from my gym told me that they'd been waiting by the door longer than these other people (which I knew was true - I'd been watching!), but they came over and shoved their way to the front of the crowd because they'd been signed up since 8:00. Well, Work Out World has a rule that you can't sign up for a class until a half hour ahead of time, NOT 90 minutes! So as soon as the Zumba class ended, people started literally SHOVING their way into the studio. People were grabbing equipment for their buddies and using their elbows to get by, and I ended up being one of several people who did NOT get a bar!! :( I was so sad - sad that my gym had closed, sad that this option wasn't seeming like it was going to work out, and especially sad at how awful people's behavior was. I ended up doing my workout with dumbbells and a different type of bar. It ended up OK for some tracks, not so much for others. Squats, chest, and back were done with ridiculously light weights - I wish I'd run out to the free weight room and grabbed some heavy dumbbells (20lbs? 25? 15? not sure), the heaviest they had in the studio were only 8lbs. But for most tracks it worked out OK. Afterward, I emailed the fitness director telling him how crowded it was and how I think they need to add more classes. Even if they add more equipment there wouldn't be ROOM for all that equipment in that tiny studio - they need TWO Saturday morning classes, and they need to add Tuesday and Thursday classes. He emailed me back saying that he's working on it. They will add more classes, and he's going to get stricter about signing up and capping off at maximum (NOT exactly what I was hoping to hear, but technically that would help..) he also mentioned that the Sunday morning class this morning wasn't as crowded, but I emailed back and pointed out that if you want to attend 3x/wk and never go two days in a row, you can't go on Sunday unless they add Tuesday/Thursday classes. OK, I'm rambling now...basically the point of this blog was to vent about how disappointed I am that my gym has closed. The new location has nicer locker rooms and is actually a little bit closer to my house, but the old location had better ellipticals, a MUCH bigger studio with more classes, and, as I mentioned two posts ago, the most amazing instructor who I really really really hope starts teaching at my new location!

As I write all this, my husband and in-laws are laying flooring in my kitchen. I am acting like a princess not helping them!! I am no good at that kind of stuff, though. I think I'll go rake the lawn instead. :)

Susan I am so sorry to hear about this crap with your gym!! Getting thrown into a new gym environment always sucks, especially when you have not-so-nice people there! I used to have to deal with this when I was going to kickboxing in Bradenton. Class started at 5:30 and I got there just in time because I got out of school at 5. So I had to fight my way in for a spot :(

I hope things change soon for you!!

I hope the headache subsided and does NOT come back. Migraines are the WORST!

As for the gym... hope they sort it out. Nothing is worse than workout stress. I used to go to a spin class on Sundays and lift weights before. The teacher was AWESOME and the class would fill up and I would always get so anxious, watching people go upstairs to the spin room while I was still lifting and wondering if I could get a bike! But then he moved to NY and they replaced him with a truly awful instructor so it's easy to get a bike because there are never more than 2 or 3 peole who will suffer through her class. And I am not one of them. Hehe!

good luck with the kitchen!

Hope you are enjoying your Sunday!

I Think I Just Had a Migraine

Saturday, November 05, 2011

I hardly EVER get headaches. This morning I was feeling fine physically (sad about my gym, but that's a topic for another blog), and then around noon I had this funky thing happen to my vision, where my peripheral vision in my right eye was all wavy. I blamed it on the sun (during certain times of day when you're standing at my new kitchen sink the sun is directly in your eyes!) and also possibly a delayed reaction to the very bright heat lamp in our new bathroom that shines on the right side of you when you're standing at the mirror...but after maybe about 10 minutes the funky vision thing went away and then all of a sudden I had a headache, bad. It hit me in the middle of my forehead and the bridge of my nose, at first...later it shifted to a pounding feeling above my left eyebrow... at first I tried an ibuprofen and attempted to continue painting my new kitchen...but it felt bad and I'm sure the paint fumes weren't helping so I took a second ibuprofen, went to bed and started to feel nausea...looked up migraines online and the whole thing about the aura with your vision before a migraine is what has me thinking that's what this was. Anyway I fell asleep for a couple hours and now I still have the headache but WAY more mild than earlier, and the nausea is gone. Anyone have any experience/tips when it comes to migraines?

sometimes migraines can be triggered by smells (there's one old lady I work with that I cannot ride the elevator with or I get a massive migraine thanks to her daily marination in perfume...sigh). Honestly, the best way to deal with migraines is to prevent them at all costs, and sleep through them when prevention doesn't work.

I unfortunately get a lot of migraines so I can give you plenty of advice on migraines. I would say the best thing to do is go into a dark room and lay down. You can try something over the counter like Excedrin Migraine. Another thing that helps me is to put a heat pack on my forehead.

JENNYD97 11/5/2011 5:57PM

I hate migraines! At least you were able to lay down, sometimes my head hurt so bad it hurt to put my head on the pillow! My Doctor gave me imatrex but I never used it because I found that if I caught it early enough I can take 2 Excedrin (not even the migraine one) it would either go away completely or at least make it so I could function, which is a really good thing when they would come on at work. Some times I will still feel a dull pain but it is soooo much better than having the migraine it never bothered me. I didn't get the blurry vision but I would feel nausea and pain in my head! If it does continue to happen definitely get your eyes checked though because a coworker of mine had the blurry vision and slight pain a few times thought it was migraines but he woke up one day and couldn't see out of that eye, I forgot what he said it was but they fixed it :)

I have had experiences with the blurry vision that you speak about. That is called an 'ocular migraine'. Mine were caused by dehydration and possibly stress too (since mine came about almost always AFTER I physically exerted myself through exercise!) Mine, luckily came with NO PAIN.

Sounds like you may be experiencing some stress (the gym situation?) or are not drinking enough fluid! Drink more, get some extra rest... I'm sure this is a one time occurrence!

XOXO
