Birthday Weekend!

Saturday, December 18, 2010

Par-tay! Happy birthday to me! Tomorrow I'm turning 33! The celebration began on Friday with a faculty breakfast where everyone with a December birthday was celebrated, and then it continued today where my entire in-law family surprised me by coming out to lunch and giving me wonderful and completely unexpected gifts! Tomorrow is the celebration with my um, original? family. However you say it - you know - the mom and dad I grew up with?:) And one of my two brothers (one of them lives across the country in CA), and of course my hubbster!

If you have a childish sense of humor like me and want to laugh until you cry, check out damnyouautocorrect.com/

Goal MET!

Saturday, December 11, 2010

I am feeling very accomplished today. Last time I wrote I set a goal for myself to count calories throughout the work week until Friday afternoon, and I did it! I'm down almost three pounds for my efforts, too! Not only that, but with this past week being absolutely hellish in terms of the amount of paperwork I had at school, I managed to go from being sorely behind at the beginning of the week to actually ahead of schedule by the time I left (last one out the door when it was pitch black yesterday at 5 P.M.). My progress reports are already done and they're not due until Tuesday. Yay!

This weekend I'm not counting calories, but I'm still being mindful of my choices. Next week I will give myself a similar challenge, and I know I can do it.

Great job! Tracking makes such a huge difference for me as well. It really forces me to pay attention to what I am eating and WHY I am eating (i.e. am I hungry, am I just bored, etc). This blog is a great reminder that hard work and dedication truly does pay off. Enjoy your weekend!

Counting Calories

Monday, December 06, 2010

I'm inspired by all the challenges I've been reading about in people's blogs! I've decided to challenge myself to count calories this week - I started this morning and I'm going to keep it up through Friday afternoon. Hopefully this will kick-start me toward making better choices again!

Building Muscle?

Friday, December 03, 2010

It occurred to me this morning that I'm probably building major muscle these days, since I'm not only strength training three times a week with progressively heavier weights, I'm also eating quite a bit. (However, I'm hardly eating any meat, so that might be slowing down the muscle building process...I get plenty of protein from other sources though. Not sure.)

Anyway, I was just curious whether anyone knew an easy way to tell how much muscle mass I may be gaining. I guess I could answer this myself - if I had my body fat percentage tested I could use that info to figure out my lean body mass. I have a scale that supposedly mesaures body fat percentage. I hardly ever use that feature because a) it's not my primary scale, b) I'm not sure I believe it can test body fat percentage with much accuracy and c) I always forget how to use that feature. :) But maybe I could start using it once in a while just as a general guide. I KNOW I've been gaining weight, and I KNOW that I've been gaining both fat and muscle, but I have no idea how much of what I've been gaining is fat and how much is muscle.

FRIZGIRL 12/10/2010 1:51PM

You can buy a scale that will do it. I bought mine for $45, and programmed it to my height, gender, age, etc and then it spits out a number. I'm not sure how accurate it is compared to an actual measurment, but it will show me if I am going up or down relative to itself.

I agree with the measurements manta on your comments :) I would love to be floated in one of those water body fat tests- they determine by water displacement how much muscle vs fat weight there is... then again, maybe I don't want to know!

i use the tape measurement method on the above site to figure out my lean body mass and body fat %. it's pretty easy.

MARATHONER340 12/3/2010 6:25PM

I would go by measurements/how your clothes are fitting - if you are getting muscle and losing fat you should be smaller over all since muscles takes up less space than fat. If you were to use the BF scale - like Erin said - do the same time of day - it has a lot to do with your hydration levels (it will overestimate if you're dehydrated and underestimate if you're overhydrated) I would use it as no more than a guide.

SWEATONCEADAY 12/3/2010 6:21PM

measurements!!! if your measurements (waist/hips) are getting smaller and your weight is increasing then it has to be muscle??

Report Inappropriate Comment
SEEHOLZ 12/3/2010 10:50AM

I'd get the calipers.. however, the calipers are only accurate if they are administered correctly, so I'd be careful.

I don't think the scale feature is any good for my body type- I retain water very easy and I sweat a lot and both things scew the %. Same with those handheld devices- forget those!

Report Inappropriate Comment
ELFITZPA 12/3/2010 10:24AM

I think the scale probably isn't overly accurate BUT you can probably still use it to track your trend over time. As long as you use it at the same time each day, you should at least be able to tell if you're BF is reducing. I shouldn't talk though - my fiance's scale has the same feature and I've stayed FAR FAR away from it!

MBSHAZZER 12/3/2010 10:21AM

Susan, I am SURE you are building muscle.

Two thoughts - even if your scale is not accurate, you can certainly use it to track the change in your BF%.

Next, you can purchase calipers and test your BF% yourself... I think the calipers are inexpensive and they are considered fairly accurate.

Enjoy!

I've already checked - my gym doesn't offer body fat testing.

DAMIENDUCKS 12/3/2010 10:15AM

oh man what a conundrum! I think body fat testing is probably the best way to go...I know my gym offers the test for like $15 a pop (you have to ask for just the body fat test though because usually they bundle it in with a trainer session)...maybe more accurate than a scale? Or there's the caliper method they used on us in middle school (oh the indignity!)...that's supposed to be pretty accurate I guess...and you'd only have to buy calipers once!

Why do you exercise?

Thursday, November 25, 2010

I have to keep this quick, since my husband just informed me that we are leaving in 20 minutes, as soon as the no-sugar-or-fat added apple pie is done baking.

I was just reading a Spark friend's blog, in which she described being introduced to running by her father. I, unfortunately, do not come from athletic parents. My dad is overweight and thinks that mowing the lawn is all the exercise he needs. My mom is impressed by all the exercise I do, but I think she worries that I overdo it.

The other day she asked me why I exercise so much. She has often said to me, "Wow, you exercise so much, you must be losing so much weight!" To which I always reply, "Nope, I'm not losing anything...I've been eating too much to lose any weight." So when she asked me why I exercise so much, she wanted to know if it was to help me lose weight, or to stay healthy. I said, "Well, it's NOT helping me lose weight, so I guess I do it to stay healthy."

But after this morning's workout I think I'd like to refine my answer. I exercise because it's so flippin' FUN!

I did 7 miles and almost 1,000 calories on the elliptical this morning. I had tunes with great beats blaring out of my iPod (hearing loss - minor sacrifice?) and was having as much fun as if I were dancing in a nightclub or something. Not once did I think about losing weight, or being healthy. I just did it to ENJOY myself, and, well, out of habit.

Okay, gotta go get ready for Thanksgiving - have a great Thanksgiving, everybody!!

I couldn't agree with you more! I exercise because it makes me feel ALIVE, like a kid again (remember how excited we all got for recess???)

Our bodies were build to move... if we don't get enough exercise, we get sick, injured or just overall feel bad. If we do too much exercise, the same is true... if you are not feeling, sick, injured or badly in general, I wouldn't say you are over-doing it!!!

Mom's can be a little bit over protective of their kids :) She's just worried about you!!! Put her mind at ease, you are an adult and know what is best for you :)

love it! me too...did a turbo kick class today and a short bike ride (an hour or so--too cold to go further) and it was totally to enjoy myself and the GoRgeOus day we have!     I totally agree! I definitely have not lost any weight for years ( well, no real weight) nor do I even think it makes me all that healthy... I just love it! It's part habit, part how it makes me feel or like how I feel when I dont' exercise. Some days it's not fun, but it's like it allows me to have those great days that are just amazing!!! I went on the ellptical yesterday and then did rebounding- I wished they had it at your gym-- it's so much fun and so good for your joints... I love classes, because they are all about fun and not just hard labor.

Happy Thanksgiving!
