Week 8

Monday, August 16, 2010

Um...I was on vacation (Cape Cod). I did bring my scale with me, but my weight fluctuated a LOT while I was there, from below my pre-vacation weight by 0.2lb to being four pounds above. So I'll call it a net little gain that I'll lose again.

The Cape was nice...a little chilly for the beach but that didn't stop me from going. I did boogie boarding a couple times, and we did the entire Rail Trail (44 miles round trip)...I don't recall it causing so much PAIN in previous years. We also played tennis, and I did a long walk on the beach on my own...but no running and definitely no strength traning while I was there. I brought a lot of my own healthy food with me knowing that it was unlikely I'd eat much of it. I had some, but also had a bunch of meals with the family and ate out too. I tried to make pretty good choices most of the time.

Time to be back on track!

Great job fitting in so much exercise while on vacation! Even if it's not what you normally do, it's far better than sitting around drinking pina coladas!

First of all, this is the time last year that you "disappeared"... right after the engagement, so being here is a sign of total progress!

Second, isn't that what living life is truly about? Being able to go "on vacation", being active, but not super strict exercise fanatic and just having fun and even enjoying that extra scoop of ice cream or what not. As long as you didn't use vacation as an "excuse" to overdo it, there is absolutely nothing wrong with it.

Don't you just hate it when some activity seems so much harder than you remember and you are like WTH happened-LOL?

Glad to have you back!

Just a quick one to say that I am FINALLY under 160 again - weighed in at 159.6 this morning. Crazy that it took me 6 and a half weeks to get here. I should look back and see how many blogs I've written just like this in the past....ugh...I am so determined to make it permanent this time!!

In other news, it's pouring right now, and I'm really hoping there's some great outdoor jogging weather coming in behind this! (It was SO muggy and icky this morning.)

Week 6 - A bit late!

Monday, August 02, 2010

Week 1: -3.8lb
Week 2: -2.2lb
Week 3: -0.4lb
Week 4: +0.4lb
Week 5: -3.6lb
Week 6: -2.2lb

As seems to be my pattern lately, though, I have since erased Week 6's loss and then some just by living it up on the weekends! But I know it'll come back down. I actually thought I was doing really well this weekend, but like I've said before recently, it only takes a little for me to gain a lot.
Weekend highlights:
*Went to a friend's gym on Thursday instead of my own - Boston Sports Clubs is way more posh than Gold's Gym, wow!
*Went to Margarita's afterwards and ate no chips, had the sunburst salad, vegetarian style (have been reading lately that the less meat you eat, even if it's chicken, the better), and used the salsa from the chips instead of dressing. Oh, and the waiter must have thought we were cute because he bought us both drinks, woohoo. :)
*Spent all of Friday morning, which was incredibly gorgeous, out running/walking/stopping to refuel. It was just a delicious morning. I bought a latte and oatmeal at Starbucks, went down to the Charles to eat while watching the sailboats, and then jogged and walked all over Boston and Cambridge for hours, sooo fun!
*Ate out almost all weekend without going overboard! Well, apparently I DID go overboard because I gained, but I really do think I made good choices. For example, I had appetizers or salads instead of meals, soup and salad instead of sandwich, and at one point pushed my friends to get sushi. Yes, I spent a LOT of money this weekend on restaurants, yikes!! I also drank...had the BEST bloody marys at Sunday brunch in the South End!!

In all it was a truly fantastic weekend and I don't really regret any of the lifestyle choices I made, with the exception perhaps of tasting too many pieces of my husband's tempura at the Japanese restaurant...that's probably what really did me in, that and the sodium.

Oh...I even helped a friend make chocolate chip cookies from scratch and didn't go crazy eating the dough - or the cooked cookies! I just licked what dough was left on my fingers and shared one cookie when they were done!

I hope everyone else is having as fantastic a summer as I am. :) I'm just super happy these days!!!

No worries about the very slight gain, it'll melt off now that you are not eating as much salt. I like your plan & you have some very good ideas on how to eat out without going overboard, I like it!

i've been working on eating less meat over all and if i had the time i'd blog about the experience.....i am not eliminating meat, but cutting back....i was so ingrained to think that i needed meat every day (uh, protein diets?) and now i realize i can get protein from other sources and that we don't need that much protein anyway

You are making such fantastic progress! It's not all or nothing... there is room in a healthy lifestyle for just about everything. And I wouldn't worry about the small weight gain... it's definitely the sodium from eating out and will come right off.

So great to hear that you're happy! And no surprise the waiter bought you a drink, because you're cute, too! :) I'd be willing to bet that the sodium in all that restaurant food has more to do with a gain than the calories. Bet you'll see it drop back down quickly. Good job on making reasonable choices and not going crazy with the cookie dough. I can't bake when I'm trying to lose weight, because I go crazy on cake and cookie batter.

Hair Update and More

Monday, July 26, 2010

I had never been so nervous to take a shower as I was last night! Since I'd read that the hair loss that people experience after a keratin hair treatment starts with the first shower (after the AWFUL three-day waiting/dry period), I knew that my shower last night would let me know whether or not this baldness thing was going to happen to me or not. Well, I just took the photo above a few minutes ago (I finally figured out how to use my new PC's built-in webcam! duh!) and as you can see...

a) I'm not bald,

but,

b) My hair isn't that straight, either.

My stylist did warn me that, unlike my old procedure (Yuko), keratin does NOT get your hair stick-straight. Still, I was a bit disappointed at how wavy it came out. I even attempted to use my straightening iron a bit this morning, and it still came out like this. Oh well, it's relatively under control now, and sort of shiny, and that's the important part!

In weight-loss news, well, there hasn't been any since I last wrote. I was pretty lenient on the calories this weekend...even had every single meal out on Saturday, though I tried to be good...and of course I couldn't exercise properly with this hair thing until last night... so my weight is up a little bit. Basically my long-term goal is to keep doing what I've been doing lately, with the hopes that my weight will reduce very, very slowly over time, and that eventually I will look really good. :) Haha, right?!?

In other news, I'm sort of sick of classes already. I like some of the instructors a lot, especially my Monday night Body Pump guy, so I'll probably go tonight, but it's only been a few weeks and I'm already getting really sick of being tied down to someone else's schedule instead of being able to make my own. I get out of summer school at noon, and I'd rather not have to sit around waiting for a 6:30 or 7:30 class - I'd rather go soon after lunch and then have the rest of the day to myself! So....I'm thinking about keeping the Monday night Body Pump (when it's convenient), but working out on my own the other days. Not sure yet.

Holy crap, I am not sure how I missed all of these blogs, but I just caught myself up. I think I am glad I missed them because I was spared worrying that you would be bald for three days! HOLY CRAP!

You already look great, so don't think that you have to postpone that, girl.

I was wondering about keratin, the staff at my salon were trying to push it on me, but I do not have $250 lying around! The 50 million dollar question, which would you do next time? Yuko or Keratin?

I had to go back and read your last few blogs to catch up on the hair goings-on. I have never really heard of having your hair straightened like this, and I may look into it for myself. I have really thick, wavy hair, and I LOVE the way it looks when it's straightened, but I hate spending 30-40 minutes with a flat-iron every other day. I think your hair looks pretty in the above picture, although it does look less straight than in the pic of you right after having the keratin done. Thanks for sharing!

Funn you mention the convenience factor--- lately, it's driving me crazy and I have not made it to a Group power ( similar to BP) ever since I got back from Europe-- summer is too fun to be outside anyways. It gets so yucky here over the winter and with Danny out of school, I don't want to do stuff at night... it's great to have the option, but anytime something ties me down, I try to change it up for that very reason...

I think the hair looks good---

And I still really like your long term outlook- you already look great... anything else will just be the Wow factor... and knowing you, you'll get there in your own time!

MBSHAZZER 7/26/2010 4:42PM

It looks fabulous! I'm glad it didn't fall out! :D I'd be pretty happy with that level of straightness. It looks like I have a bird's nest on top of my head right now!

I totally hear you on the classes. I rarely go for that very reason. Also, they seem to always be at awkward times. Fortunately for me, my gym has 2 locations, so between the 2, I can usually find a spin class that fits on the one or 2 days that I want to spin. It seems like you are pretty motivated to work out on your own, though, so I think you'll be fine to work out when you want to. I would totally want my afternoons to myself!
