Weight loss this week

Saturday, January 26, 2013

For the first time in my life, I was not happy to see how much weight I lost this week. My first thought is that the scale needs a new battery. My second thought is that I have had a severe constipation problem. I finally broke down and went to see a specialist. The problem has been resolved. My third thought is that I've lost muscle weight from not exercising as much.

It's probably not just one of those things. It's likely a combination of all three. I know how much I ate this week, and my jeans are tighter, not loser.

The good thing is the alarm I felt at seeing the numbers and knowing that something is wrong. I want to use the pool being closed as an opportunity to have some new exercise experiences......Maybe I will finally check out that Zumba class at DH's workplace that I have been so curious about.

Why does it take blogging about problems to get them sharply focused in your mind?

Zumba can be lots of fun if you don't think about how you look to others but just go in and have a blast. Like anything else in the gym!

The answer to that question is: Once you put something in writing and can clearly SEE the problem, then you can proceed to OWN it and then do something to FIX it.

A little of Dr. Phil's philosophy... emoticon

Funny you should mention "Zumba Class" as I was just thinking about taking a class at our local community center. Thanks for the reminder. emoticon

Spark Menu Shopping and Day 1

Saturday, January 26, 2013

I considered this a stock up week, so I didn't really spend any more on groceries than I do during a stock up week. But the cart looked a lot different than it usually does.

I am known well by the produce staff at our WalMart. They were really happy to see me this week. On stock up weeks my cart is usually loaded with canned items on sale or frozen food I have coupons for. Sometimes it's meat. This week it was produce, deli, and bakery items. The deli and bakery are areas of the store I usually avoid.

Hard salami. That was a find. I cannot believe the way it smells. We had some for a snack yesterday. We're having some for lunch today. I have managed to stay out of the baked chips so far. We'll see how well I do after the bag is opened at lunch today. So far I haven't even thought about it.

Yes, I survived egg whites for breakfast. I added a tablespoon of fresh salsa. I didn't think that would break the calorie bank. I didn't mind eating them as much as I did the first time I made them. I doubt they will ever be top on my list of things I like to eat for breakfast. I have to admit I like oatmeal a lot more than I used to. I have become a big hot cereal fan.

For some reason, oatmeal is a big calorie meal for me. If I have it for breakfast, I have to be very careful the rest of my day not to go over my ranges. Maybe having it causes me to want more carbs the rest of the day? Idk. I don't do egg whites either. If I did, I think I'd have to do only 1 white + 1 whole egg to eat it.
I wish there were a way to differentiate between "good" fats and carbs vs. "bad" ones. I mean, farm fresh eggs and nuts shouldn't have to be counted the same as a bowl of Great Value ice cream. lol.
Have you found a meal from SP that you absolutely adore yet? Seems I have to weed out the true gems from the typical diet foods that marathon trainers eat on their "light" days.

Spark Menu, Day 1, Breakfast

Friday, January 25, 2013

DH and I both give this morning's breakfast a thumbs up. I did and 1 tablespoon of salsa to the cheese wrap. This is one of the things I wanted following the menu to do for me. I would never have thought to make this breakfast. We are oatmeal/cream of wheat people.

We had 2 ounces of low fat cheese wrapped in a whole wheat tortilla. I added a tablespoon of fresh salsa. We like spicey, and a plain cheese tortilla seemed a little bland. I didn't realize the menus were different. I thought we all were looking at the same basic menu. DH is just eating the same things I am. He even asked for portions the same as mine, even though he doesn't need to lose weight. I guess he thinks if he eats reduced portions at home, he can raid the vending machine at work more often. emoticon

What did you make? The menu isn't the same for all of us. Hubby and I are given different menus to follow and I hate that.

Garlic Update

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

It died. It's just too cold and dry for it. I think I am going to plant some more when it warms up a little - maybe at the end of February.

The drought is severe here. DH was talking to a man who works for Parks and Wildlife. He said the top four feet of soil has no moisture. My perennial herbs look terrible, and I hand water those. We need rain.

Diet Doldrums

Wednesday, January 23, 2013

I am not sure what interrupted my weight loss roll. The holidays. Traveling during the holidays and then immediately afterward to go to a funeral. It's cold. I tend to eat more when it's cold.....I am not doing super lousy bad. I'm just eating at maintenance level. Yesterday, I think due to the cold, I was 250 calories over my limit. I was genuinely hungry, and everything I had was "good for you" food. But that was one of the reasons I gained weight. I ate healthy (most of the time), homemade (most of the time) meals and snacks. My portions were just way to big. I love feeling satisfied.

I have also had the thought that I don't want to shop and spend the money for smaller clothes. Most of the clothes in my closet are size 14. I can wear size 12, but 14's are just SO comfortable, and except for the relaxed fit 14's, look good on me.

I have also added a new goal area to my agenda recently: overcoming my slovenly care of the house. Focused solely on weight loss, I was doing well. Now I'm trying to multi-task, and I'm not doing a very good job in either area. Theoretically, the two should work together. If I stay busy in the house, I shouldn't think about eating as much, right?

Gardening is just around the corner.

My solution to the diet doldrums conundrum is this. Beginning Friday for one week, we are going to eat from the Spark Menu. We did one day last fall and survived. I've been checking out the menu for a week ahead each day. Next Wednesday is a, "Yuck!" day. Egg whites for breakfast and nothing hot the rest of the day. Other than that the menu looks doable. When the weather warms up, I am thinking about using the Spark Menu all the time for the summer. I just can't go days at a time in cold weather with nothing hot to eat. I also will not eat turkey for breakfast. I am not to fond of the idea of breakfast for lunch, either. I've noticed it's on the menu every couple of weeks. Other than those issues, I'm willing to give it the college try.

Hmm, I have the Spark Cook Book and should re:read it, look up some of their good recipes! I'll check out their menus, thanks for sharing this!
I had hot oatmeal for breakfast this morning and that sticks to my ribs till lunch.
Good blog, enjoyed reading it and all the best with following the Spark Menu!
