Registered for 2014 Bay to Breakers

Thursday, October 31, 2013

I'm so excited, I've just registered for next years Bay to Breakers! This is the fourth year in a row that I've participated and each year I get a little bit better and a little bit faster.

In 2011 it was the 100th anniversary of the Bay to Breakers and I was so excited to be participating in such an event. However somewhere between mile markers 4 and 5 blisters were developing on my heels and my toes were cramping up. I thought "there's no way I'm going to make it" but I did it. Note to self....don't buy new shoes to wear for the race without breaking them in first!

In 2012 my hips and knees were feeling sore by the end, but the adrenaline had kicked in so I didn't really care. At least I beat last years time! Oh, and I wore the same shoes but at least they were broken in!

In 2013 I felt really good at the end of the race. Good thing too because I had to hike up the hill at Ocean Beach past the Cliff House to meet my husband, which added about a half a mile. Yep, still wearing the same shoes. They're WELL broken in and comfy now!

2014 I think I'll invest in a new pair of running shoes. I've got until May 18th to get them broken in!

Glad you're doing the race again. Group events are always a lot of fun, and exciting. Isn't that a clothing optional run, that would make it even better. I wish I could do it, but I broke both my heels about 6 years ago and that ended my running. I know that stretch well, I've ridden it on my bike several time and then went over the Golden Gate, it's a great ride. I also like to swim in Aquatic Park when I'm there. Have fun and train hard.

Bridge To Bridge 10k in San Francisco

Monday, October 07, 2013

Sunday October 6th was the much anticipated Bridge to Bridge 10k in San Francisco. It's known as America's most beautiful run and if you ran it you would know why. The weather was amazing....86 degrees, sunny and clear (good thing I remembered my sunscreen!) And the views of Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge were breathtaking.
My finish time wasn't so great (1:40:58) but I finished, and that's what I'm focusing on. I started off by jogging the first 1/2 mile or so, but then walked most of the time after that. Around mile 4 I felt a blister developing on my pinky toe, but I powered through.
Today I'm stiff and moving very slowly, but still looking forward to next year!!!

Congratulations on your 10K. That is a beautiful run, I've ridden my bike form Aquatic Park to over the Golden Gate and I loved it.. Did you stop at the fort under the Golden Gate, that would be a great stopping place lots of room there. and I love that Museum, they had a lot of fire power. Hope you keep running, see how far you can run in your next 10K. emoticon

I've been gone for a while, but I'm back!

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Hi everyone, it has been so long since since I've "Sparked", six months to be exact. I finally landed a job which means two things:
1) I'm sedentary all day. As much as I try to get up and move as much as possible, I'm basically at a desk all day.
2) I mindlessly snack all day. I would constantly reach for things like nuts or chips or crackers. Combine this with being sedentary and you've got a recipe for disaster, which is exactly what happened. In six months I packed on about seven pounds.

Unfortunately (or fortunately) I was recently laid off so I am getting myself back on track. I'm getting back into my old exercise routine, and definitely eating better which feels great! I'll be doing my weekly weigh-ins and posting the results, making me accountable for everything I put in my mouth. That's really the only way I can manage to stay on track. It's a tough road, but we can all get there one step at a time!

The Biggest Loser 5k Here I Come!

Friday, February 15, 2013

I'm so excited that I've registered for The Biggest Loser 5k in Sacramento. I know, I know, it's only a 5k but I'm excited to be a part of an event that is sponsored by The Biggest Loser. A show that has inspired me since Season 1 Episode 1. From what I've read about the event it's going to be nothing but positive energy and encouragement, which is something we can all use a dose of. No judgement, just people getting to the finish line as best they can. I've got 4 weeks to train for it and I hope to have a time of about 45 minutes. I've only ever run/walked a 5k on my treadmill and my best time is 50 minutes. I'm sure it's going to be a whole different experience from being by myself on the treadmill and staring at the tv to being part of a huge crowd cheering each other on.

The event is on March 16th and I'll let you all know how it went when it's over. Wish me luck!!!!

There is no such thing as "only a 5K!" I remember my first and I remember my 32nd! Each one is an experience. If fact, I press harder for speed in my 5Ks than my 10K and my Half Marathons. The most important thing to remember is "Run Your Own Race!" I can appreciate the speed racers But I have more respect for the first timers and those that share this journey with me. If you are doing this program, you'll be ready.
I'm totally excited for you! Stay strong, focused, and train well! I look forward to reading about your incredible experience!

I'm sure it will be a lot fun. And stop with the "it's only a 5k" because I know thin people who cringe at the thought of running for THREE miles. You are awesome. After you finish the race, I hope you agree.

How I plan to sneak in a workout on Christmas Eve

Friday, December 14, 2012

The holidays are upon us and that means a lot of extra snacks, rich foods and cocktails. This year, instead of everyone vegging out in front of the tv at my sister's house watching A Christmas Story marathon (within arms reach of the snack table of course), I decided that I'm going to bring Just Dance for Wii with a couple of extra controllers. That will get everyone off the couch burning some holiday calories and having fun. I know a few of my relatives will appreciate the opportunity to get up and MOVE!!!!!

I think that is a wonderful idea! If older people will not get up, ask them to show you a slow dance form the olden days and then crank up the wii....
