My very first (and not last) 10k!

Friday, October 12, 2012

Last Sunday I participated in San Francisco's 3rd annual Bridge to Bridge 10k, and what an awesome experience! We went from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate Bridge and back to Crissy Field. From the starting line you couldn't even see the Golden Gate Bridge and I thought for sure I wouldn't be able to make it, but I did! I ran with my best friend and our mantra throughout the entire race was "We can do this. We will do this. We ARE doing this!" It was awesome. My official time wasn't so great, 1:37:09, but now I have something to shoot for next time. I would like to shave about 10 minutes off, but I don't want to push it too much. I'm just so proud of myself for making it to the finish line. Ya baby, 6.2 miles!!!!!

Inspired by the Olympics!

Saturday, July 28, 2012

There is something about seeing athletes with zero body fat and pushing themselves to the absolute limit that really inspires me. I feel like I give it all I've got during my 30-40 minute workout, but when I look at the faces of all the athletes and realize what a wimp I am. Okay, I'm old enough to be their grandparent, but that's beside the point. I just need to suck it up. If I want the results I have to work for it!

Not ready to squeeze into that wet suit just yet

Friday, June 15, 2012

Here it is mid-June and the vacation pounds I gained last April are still with me....and then some. My "healthy weight" is 165 and I somehow managed to hit 179 and I know that come hell or high water I wasn't going to get to 180. I always thought 170 was my maximum I would allow, but I kind of blew that one out of the water. How did I allow this to happen? I've been working out hard every day for at least 30 minutes and I thought I was watching what I was eating. But then I realized that I stopped tracking all my meals. Big mistake! I always thought it was a pain to log every little thing I put in my mouth, but I can see now that it really makes a difference. For the last 2 days now I've been diligently logging everything I eat and I've dropped a half a pound. I know it doesn't sound like much but I'm at least heading in the right direction.

I was supposed to go diving this weekend, but it didn't work out so instead I'll be going the weekend of the 6th. That gives me 3 weeks to make getting into and out of that wet suit a little easier. Yeah!!!!

I've had a goal of buying a wetsuit when I got to my target bodyfat of 24%. I got as close as 26%, and now I'm at 28%. Grrr! I need to get back on track, too.

Have fun on your dive! There's no diving emoticon, so this will have to do! emoticon

I agree about getting into and out of the wetsuit. That is part of the reason I have decided to not haul our dive gear to Minnesota next month.

Way to write what you bite, ScubaDiva. Jealous of your upcoming dive. Enjoy! emoticon

9 days in Maui = 3.4 lbs.

Monday, April 30, 2012

I guess that's not TOO bad considering that I also took a vacation from my diet. That's not to say that I didn't make wise choices while eating out, but let's face it I only chose healthy options if that's what I truly wanted. I'm hoping that at least a pound is due to water weight, we flew in last night and I drank a ton of water before, during and after our flight. Now that I'm back to eating home cooked meals we'll see what the scale holds in store for me tomorrow. Now if only I can get past this jet lag........

During your 9 days on Maui did you dive or just relax and enjoy the island itself?

Just 5 pounds to go....then what?

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

I have less than 2 weeks to get down to my goal weight before going on vacation, but then I realized.....then what? Will I miraculously stay at my goal weight during my entire vacation? No, it just means that I reached my goal the day I left but what's the scale going to read when I come home? I can blame the heat and humidity for my clothes not fitting right, but I know that it's living the vacation lifestyle that's going to sneak the pounds right back on. The best I can do is to stay as active as possible and make the best choices when it comes to food and beverages. Wish me luck!

You can try to add a few things to the vacation lifestyle that mesh with a healthy lifestyle.

One is more activity - rather than just lounging by a pool, get in the water and swim; rather than riding around in a rented car, rent a bike and pedal your way to less accessible sights; and so on.

Another is portion control. It only takes a few bites to savor and appreciate a food or drink. Nothing has to be emptied, no plate has to be cleaned. Better to take two bites and really remember how good it was than to wolf it down and only remember that you had it.

Another is minimizing any alcohol. Let the freedom and the fun and the sun and the locale give you a "buzz". Who wants to spend their mornings on vacation feeling bleh and miserable - from alcohol or from the excess eating while inhibitions are lowered?
