Second and Third 5K's in sight

Saturday, September 03, 2011

Well, I have made up my mind. I will be running in the 7th Annual 5K in Galena, IL. on September 24th. Wasn't sure if I was going to since I was going to be out of town the two weeks prior to the race, but I decided I need to do this. I will just take my running shoes along with me and fit some time in. That's all there is to it. This will be my second one. My only goal is to come in under 38:11 which was my time from my first 5K in July. I will do it!!
The following weekend, October 1st, I will run my third 5K in Ely, IA. If someone would have told me at the beginning of 2011 that I would be running three 5K races, I would have laughed in their face..."Yeah right" But here I am. I have to thank spark people for lighting my spark. It has changed my life!

When I used to travel more, I would bring my running shoes. I found running in another city to be just so *exhilarating*. Maybe it's exciting because after running around in circles in a neighborhood so familiar, it becomes so fresh and exciting to do it else where. I don't think you'll regret it!

Oh and congrats on all your accomplishments! I love the buzz at 5ks, have an awesome time with next ones!

my first 5k

Monday, August 01, 2011

I attempted to run my first 5K on Saturday. It didn't go too bad. I made it in 38:11...which considering I walked 3 times over the course of the 3.1 miles...I don't think that's too shabby. I am going to keep training and would love to try another one before the snow flies. When I started this, I didn't think I would actually stick with it...let alone enjoy it. But with the help of my spark friends and setting the right goals and creating that confidence...I have done it!

Thanks to all my spark friends...it would've been a lot harder without you all!

Yay!! Congrats!! I do hope to be you in a few weeks!! I'm going to start with the virtual first, and then try to face my first one before the snow hits. Great job!!! Great inspiration!! ps..how did it feel walking on the course? Do many others do it? Does it feel weird? I'm worried that is what I will have to do as well in my first one...

catching up

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Did fairly well this week considering you could cut the air with a knife and it was hotter than hell.

Monday--- I proceeded to increase to 12run/3walk for 2 intervals. Well it went ok. After minute 8 of the 2nd 12 minutes the run turned brutal. The breeze was on vacation, sweat was dripping in my eyes, and I had a cramp in my butt (don't ask me how that happened). I expected to have some trouble...not the butt cramp though. So like I've done for all the previous increases.....I became the little engine that could. I think I can...I think I can...I think I can. Setting my sights on smaller goals....making it to that mailbox...oh there's a crack in the road surely I can make it there....and finally the 12 minute buzzer went off and I made it. emoticon

Wednesday---I prefer to go first thing in the morning, but I had an early meeting so I had to postpone it until after work. Certainly not ideal conditions...93 degrees...105 heat index...and humidity up the ying yang. But I was determined to get something in. So away I went. Armed with my water bottle and sweatband (which I learned from Monday's experience). I was lookin good emoticon
Well I did my 5 minute warm-up walk and did make my 12 minute run, but then I had to head back home. So I walked the rest of the way back. It was just too hot, sticky and thick. Disappointed I couldn't make it farther, but proud of myself for even going out. Thinking a treadmill might not be a bad idea.

Today---Was a pleasure. I didn't get any running in, but I had a marvelous walk and talk with DeAnna. It was wonderful to catch up.

Tomorrow---I will get up early and hit the road before it gets too hot. I'm looking forward to seeing how that second 12 minute run goes....I'd like to shoot for 3 intervals. We'll see. I am really enjoying this which surprises me a little. I just hope I don't lose this momentum once the 5K is over.

Wow, I would probably not have gone on Wednesday. Tuesday was my bad run day this week, and same thing, I made it through the first half, but then just walked back. And that was at 7am! This morning was not quite as hot, but I am really looking forward to some relief next week!

Saturday

Saturday, July 16, 2011

I continued with my 8 min run/2 min walk this morning. I went for 4 intervals. When the last eight minute beep went off I was feeling pretty good so I just kept on running. I went for 13 minutes straight...I think if I had been on a flat part of my course I probably could have gone longer, but I was headed up the biggest hill on my course and I ran out of gas about half way up and had to back down to a walk. Even so, I'm pretty pumped about it! I think I'm ready to bump it up...I think I might do 12 min run/2 min walk for 3 intervals on Monday and see how that goes. Slowly working my way up...hopefully I'm to the point when my 5K comes up on July 30th to run the whole thing. That's the goal anyway. Now I just have to convince myself that I'm not a complete failure if I need to walk part of the way through. Don't know if my type A personality is willing to cooperate. Definitely a work in progress.

That's awesome! I think you're doing great! I hear ya on that type A personality thing. But you're thinking right...preparing yourself for that possibility...and getting a good mind-set for it! Keep up the good work! Good luck on the new interval tomorrow! Thank you for all your encouragement. I hope you are having a great weekend! Count your blessings! Spark on! emoticon
