A week ago I was standing on the ledge

Monday, May 13, 2013

Okay so that's a bit of an exaggeration but I blogged right before I left for vacation that I was feeling a bit discouraged that I wasn't seeing any movement on my scale

I was heartened by the encouragement and support I received from some of you about not focusing on the scale and enjoying my time away while continuing to track and monitor my food and fitness.

I took my tablet PC with me and continued to log into Spark People and track my food, fitness, water and sparkpoints daily. I read a motivational article or two every day and got in plenty of rest, relaxation, walking and a mental break from my job.

Though I was careful with my food choices, I did eat out a lot and it's much harder for me to control foods that I don't have a hand in preparing for myself, so I was a bit worried that this morning when I weighed in I might actually see a gain. That was not the case at all, in fact the scale showed a drop of 3 more pounds. Lesson learned here. Just keep doing what I need to do, faithfully track my food, fitness and water and let go of the results.

I find eating away from home to be VERY tough. Maybe the lack of stress did the trick for you. I am so happy that you got good results on a vacation. Congrats!

Discouraged but not defeated

Sunday, May 05, 2013

Okay I admit it, I am a bit discouraged this morning. My normal weekly weigh in is on Monday mornings but because I am leaving for a short vacation this morning I decided to weigh in before leaving today. I was really hoping to see some downward movement on the scale but alas yet another week (I think this is the 3rd week in a row) of staying the same.

No, I'm not ready to chuck it all, throw in the towel and give up and get crazy on vacation but I was a bit disheartened not to see any movement on the scale, especially because I have been rigorous and diligent about sticking to my food plan and exercising every day. I KNOW that's a dangerous place for my head to go and it is the very thing that has sapped my motivation and willingness in the past. So I gave myself a little pep talk and figured that was that. But guess what that wasn't the end of it!

I have been bombarded with reminders this morning to stick with it. In my spark mail this morning there was my lifestyle change reminder that this is not so much about diet and weight loss as embracing permanent lifestyle changes. A random blog I choose to read was coach Nicole's reminder to "keep your eyes OFF the prize" (things like weight loss) and focus on the place just in front of you rather than the seemingly insurmountable hills ahead. Another Spark blog I read talked expressly about lifestyle vs dieting too. Okay I get it!

So off I go on vacation motivated to stick to my food plan and exercise, even while travelling, and not to focus on it overly much but rather to see the flowers (I am going to the tulip festival in Holland, Michigan) and enjoy the company of my mother who I'll be travelling with.

I am so very grateful for all of those motivational reminders just when I needed to read them. I know that the scale will move downward again, probably when I stop focusing my sights on it.

Enjoy your holiday and at same time, try to balance and don't ever feel guilty if you overate or not being too active, there's still next day to do much better!

My Zip is changing my life!

Monday, April 29, 2013

I have always known that I am motivated by numbers and competition (with myself). Things like Spark Points excite and inspire me. So when I heard talk about the Fit Bit, I figured it might have a positive influence on my exercise motivation.

What an understatement that has turned out to be! My Fit Bit Zip has rocked my world, changed my life in ways I would never have imagined and motivated me beyond my wildest dreams.

Today for instance in an effort to rack up some extra steps I decided to walk to the post office to mail a package rather than driving the couple of miles each way. I loved the Fit Bit message I got on my phone app when I got home this evening calling me an over achiever!

Turns out I exceeded my 10,000 step goal by more than 3000 extra steps today!

Go Zip!!!

I had no idea just how much of an impact my fitibt zip would have, I have had pedometers, used GPS walk/run apps before, but none of them had me changing how I viewed overall all day movement. Love my little "fitty" :=)

Loving it here!

Sunday, April 28, 2013

Have I told you all lately how much I appreciate you! Yes, you! This SP site rocks! It never fails that when I reach out for support or advice that someone reaches back. I haven't met any of you face to face. You don't know me from Adam and yet here you are in my corner. Caring about my successes and failures and cheering me on when the going gets tough.

I am ever so thankful that I stumbled upon this site several weeks ago! There is so much motivation and inspiration here, all you have to do is be open to it!

I decided to get involved in as many of the aspects of this site as I could each day and it's paying off in a big way. I am motivated, I am inspired and I am making progress despite the hurdles that come up in the course of daily life.

Thanks you for being here and for bringing me the support that I need to succeed! How can I help you?

Should I or shouldn't I?

Saturday, April 27, 2013

I'm really not sure if I should exercise today or not. I have had a nasty head cold and upper respiratory infection for the last 3 days. I am stuffy and a bit weak and a bit off balance from the cold meds that I took yesterday and last night. But I am thinking I could mange a few minutes of some exercise. I really hate to miss a day!

Weird new thoughts for me since a month ago I would have seen this as a perfect excuse to "get out of" exercising!

Any thoughts from you all about working out when ill?

If you would feel more comfortable doing a little exercising, do just a little, and then rest for the rest of the day. Be sure not to overdo it!

Just get outside for a while and walk and afterwards take a nap or something to help you feel better. Cold are nasty things and sometimes hang on forever. Just do light exercise until you feel better.

When I need motivation for working out I always ask myself, "have you ever regretted working out?" then answer is always no. I feel better no matter how much I was dreading in before. If you're up to it, try doing a little something.
