Taking off the blinders

Monday, April 08, 2013

Okay so I admit my naiveté, denial, disbelief about how active I am (or am not) as the case may be.

I have a desk job. I work a lot. Therefore I sit a lot. And yet, somehow in my mind I think of myself as being pretty active throughout the day. My new Fit Bit is proving me wrong on that score! I am becoming a total nerd about that Fit Bit dashboard. I love having the ability to look at my stats at the end of the day and see what the real deal is.

So for today the real deal is that I can clearly see that I need to get up and move more throughout the day at the office. How cool is it to be able to have numbers to back up or refute my assumptions. After all when we know better, we do better! Here's to a better, fitter me!

emoticon it's amazing what a little FitBit can do isn't it? It's a great motivator, I know.

I am so happy to be a part of the SparkPeople community. I've been here less than a month but I have wholeheartedly thrown myself into the experience. SparkPeople is so perfect for me in so many ways. I love the competitive gaming nature of the points, trackers and challenges. I love the positive upbeat support and encouragement I see happening between members. I love inspirational and motivational blogs, spark page entries and group posts. I love the informational articles and videos. I love the new things that I am learning and the old things that I am reminded about.

How grateful I am to have stumbled on this site four weeks ago! Suddenly my support network has taken on huge new proportions! emoticon

I agree! I believe this site has a lot to offer to those who participate. When I first joined, I didn't take advantage of all it has to offer - most notably the community and team feature - and I started to feel the site was a time suck. When I came back recently I decided to throw my whole self into it and use it to its full potential and that has made SUCH a difference. I now feel I'm on a journey with a great group of people instead of struggling to row the boat myself - and getting frustrated at my lack of progress. It's pretty darned cool!

Not sleeping

Saturday, April 06, 2013

I should be in bed. I am working the weekend and really need to get my rest. In part I am still awake because I tend to be a night owl. In part I am still awake because I wanted to get a jump start on my SP work before I go to work tomorrow. In part I am still awake because I had such a lovely day at the zoo with my Great Goddaughter and later a lovely dinner and visit with her parent's my Goddaughter and her husband. I sure won't be earning any points today for getting at least 7 hours sleep but I am feeling a bit sleepy now so I will bid you good night. emoticon

Zoo bound

Friday, April 05, 2013

My 7 year old God-daughter spent the night last night and we have the whole day together today. We made a list of fun things we might to today and finally decided we would head to the zoo in a little while (once it warms up some). The high temperature in the Detroit area today will be a crisp 50 degrees. so we'll layer up, pack a lunch and head off for our zoo adventure. Bonus for me ..... lots of extra walking.

Sit up & take notice!

Thursday, April 04, 2013

Boy, am I noticing lately just how bad my posture is sometimes! I have a heightened awareness of just how often I am slouching when sitting, slumping when sitting and not standing tall when walking. I guess those realizations are a good thing because when I become aware of them I do sit up straight and stand up taller!

Weird how unnatural it feels to pull up out of my torso, you'd think it would feel better but it actually feels like I have to work consciously to make it happen. A bit like needing to consciously suck in my stomach, it's work! But that's a blog post for another day! Bottom line is that Improved posture helps to release tension, build muscle, and give you energy and an instantly taller, slimmer-looking physique. For the moment I am going to sit up & take notice!

One good thing about siting up straight is it makes you use your abs. Denise Austin used to say that sucking in your gut for one minute amounts to a belly crunch. I remember she was sitting in a car when she said that on her show. She said you can suck in your belly while driving, working at a desk, just any time! And sitting straight help prevent osteoporosis by the back muscles pressing against the vertebrae, thus strengthening those all-important bones. I think it's helped me through the years.
