Pray for our Haitian friend

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

My husband's co-worker/ our personal friend has family in Haiti. He doesn't know if everyone is ok. There is no means of communication over there and we are feeling anxiety with him. And for those reading this and are affected, you have OUR prayers as well.

They are saying now that 100,000 people may have died in Haiti. I can't imagine how worried your friend must be. Hope his people are safe.

Not just ANY birthday

Wednesday, September 02, 2009

Hi everyone, today is my birthday, and I want to tell you why THIS one is very significant for me. In November, 1986, my mother passed away from cancer and other health problems (including lack of exercise and being overweight) at age 57; in November, 1998, my husband passed away from his 4th and final heart attack due to heavy smoking (close to 3 packs a DAY) and not eating healthy foods and not exercising at age 57. How old am I today you ask----I am 57. I quit smoking over 30 years ago, I have since remarried (7 years this September 5th) to someone who has great exercise and eating routines that has rubbed off on ME, and Spark People! The articles, my spark friends, weight and food tracking is great! My overall health is very good---THANK YOU SPARK FRIENDS!! I will keep on keeping on!

I am so sorry for your losses! I remember that my dad used to dread turning 53 because that was how old his mom was when she died. It is good that you aren't dreading 57 but seem to be embracing it! All the healthy changes you have made have certainly added to your well-being, so keep up the good work! Congratulations on 7 years of marriage!

Woodstock 40 Year Anniversary 8/15/09

Monday, August 03, 2009

Woooo hoooo! My husband & I scored tickets to attend the Woodstock 40th anniversary concert to be held in Bethel, NY at The Bethel Woods Center of the Arts August 15th! In case you're wondering----NO, neither one of us made it to the FIRST one (but not for lack of trying for me--another story lol). We wanted to go on a camping trip anyway, and hey, what a great way to do it! I will post a follow-up blog on our vacation. Until then---peace, love, flower power, and all that good stuff! emoticon emoticon www.bethelwoodscenter.org/bwevents/e

A Scary but Interesting Experience

Thursday, July 30, 2009

It was after 11 pm, I opened the back door to join my husband and sit in the back yard to enjoy a cool, quiet evening. As soon as I stepped out, I heard this god-awful loud (and I mean LOUD) screeching/chirping and saw a huge, round "thing" fly up and down in front of me! I was beyond screaming, I was actually frozen and shaking in terror. The next thing I hear is my husband telling me to quickly close the door. Too late---"it" flew in. Still barely able to say anything and still shaking, I asked him what that was and he didn't know. We looked in our bedroom to make sure it didn't fly in THERE, but it was playing on us that it was in the house SOMEWHERE. I got up (after by some miracle getting sleep), went into the kitchen to get coffee around 6:45 AM and------GASP!!------there it was on the counter, dead. Or so we thought. My VERY BRAVE husband poked it and it flinched (and we both jumped back as though we were getting an electrical shock). He took a Styrofoam bowl, covered it, dragged it to the edge of the counter, then covered the bowl with a small pot lid, and put it outside (and it flew away). I AGAIN asked him what was that??!! Neither one of us STILL didn't know. I googled the word "locust", clicked onto "images" and then-----OMG!! It was a CICADA!! Can you believe it! It became dormant because of the air conditioning (thankfully). Google it and read about them sometime, it is very interesting! Apparently, I startled it. I sure won't forget this experience anytime soon! Thankfully, they're harmless and more afraid of US.

Wooooo! I would have screamed louder than anyone and would have
awakened the whole neighborhood.

Me and bugs do not get along. Thank goodness the air conditioning sort of
cliped it's wings, so you could get it out of the house.

I understand that they are real noise makers, too.

Hugs,
Gayle

Wow! That is one big bug. Have to go read on that one, don't remember ever seeing one, tho' it kinda looks like a large horse fly. Glad it all turned out well.

I'm not a bug person, but I can see that it was an interesting experience. All's well that ends well.

I am sure that was scary. Cicada are harmless but they make a terrible noise. They have an interesting life cycle. Glad all is well.

    Hi,

I understand the experience. My hubby is in the military. A few years ago, after hubby had come home from some field training, I opened a closet and there was a big black thing. I slowing closed the closet door (sliding type). I found a plastic bottle and slid it into the bottle. I also had the A/C on. It must have become dormant. Then I put it outside, in the shade. Of course, hubby was on a 24 hour shift. I went to see him. I had to have this creature identifed. On the way to see him, it starts flying around in the bottle and making a noise. I was so nervous. When I got to his duty station, one of the soldiers ID'd the creature as a cicada.

I am with you on all this.
Andrea

Agh! I hate when things fly into my face like that. I had a similar experience with an owl while I was riding my motorcycle once. I think that once suprised both of us.

Happy Fathers Day

Sunday, June 21, 2009

Happy Fathers Day to whom it may apply to! My dad will be 83 this July 2nd; he and my stepmother take daily walks, & he can STILL beat me at poker and arm wrestling. He is and always will be my hero, friend, and shoulder to lean on. HAPPY FATHERS DAY!
