Hi spark friends, it's been awhile. I'm finally on the mend from a lower back injury. What I thought was sciatica turned out to be a condition called sacroiliitis (sacro-ill-e-itis).
Just to brief those who don't know what that is:
The sacroiliac (SI) joint is a very irregularly shaped joint located where the ilium (hip bone) and the sacrum (tail bone) meet. The joint has very little motion; however, the limited motion it does have is very important to the proper functioning of the lumbar spine, as well as the hip.
The SI joint is susceptible to traumatic (sudden, forceful injury) and inflammatory conditions. Common causes of injury are slips or falls; however, it also can be "injured" by overuse. Overuse can result from frequent and prolonged bending or sitting for extended periods of time. Occasionally, intense pain can arise from doing something as simple as bending over to pick up a pencil or tie a shoe.
Believe it or not, I bent over to pick up something in the wrong way and was out of work since last Thursday. Today is Sunday and I am feeling MUCH better. When I went to the chiropractor, I was x rayed and he saw that my lower back and hips were thrown out of alignment. He snapped everything back, gave me simple stretching exercises to do, and put an ice pack on. Fortunately I didn't have to take any Rx meds, just over the counter ( such as Aleve).
Tomorrow morning I go for my follow-up visit and to get the ok to return to work. I miss working out. Right now the best I can do is take my walks s-l-o-w-l-y and do the recommended stretching. If there is anyone that has any other work-out suggestions, I would love to hear it. Thanks

To say that I had a great time at my 40th reunion would be an understatement. There was about 120 or so (out of over 700 grads!) that attended. Not only was it nice to see friends I hung out with, but there were several that were----how do I say this----NOT friends at the time that not only welcomed me but apologized, giving me the peace and closure that I secretly longed for.
During that weekend, my husband and I hiked for a total of about 10 miles (about 5 miles a day) at several parks and we could not have asked for better weather---sunny, 70's.
Here I am at the reunion---I don't think I stopped smiling the whole evening LOL!
Needless to say, I have always enjoyed walking around and spending time at this park. It has a hilly hiking trail which really gives you a good workout while enjoying the scenery.
The next day, I went out for dinner with my family; from left to right is my son Andrew, my dad, my stepmom, yours truly, and my husband.
I gained 2 pounds when I weighed myself at work, but quickly lost it. I believe all that walking kept me from gaining more----and I have my husband and sparkpeople to thank! By the way, I need to get new shirts----as you can see, the black one I wore at the park was very loose since I lost the pounds LOL.

There were no ifs ands or buts! For the past several months, I've been buckling down with diligent working out and eating lean meats and lots of veggies and fruits. And it's not just for the reunion (which is Saturday, October 8th), but for the quality of life. And I am thrilled to tell you that I am no longer pre-diabetic and my bad cholesterol level is within the normal range. And sorry if you haven't really heard from me in a while; that's because I haven't been plopping my fanny in front of my computer as long as I used to. Now, on that note, I'm gonna get going and go for a long walk, then do some weights and the kettlebell.
Luv ya all,
Chris

Just to let everyone know----we are getting prepared for the pending hurricane. My husband and son are getting several cases of bottled water and canned foods. Oh boy, we will try to make as healthy choices as possible by getting the "no salt and sugar added". For those who are reading this and you are in the path, be safe. Instead of getting "real" candles, we got the LED battery-operated ones which I feel is much safer and not a fire-hazard plus we got extra batteries for the flashlights. It is expected to hit Saturday, so being that it is Thursday, we still have 2 days. Let me know how you are doing with preparations----I care.
