Merry Christmas! Wishing everyone a peaceful day.

It's been a while since I posted. I've achieved my goal weight and more. As has been the pattern in the past, I struggle to maintain. I'm continuing to lose weight albeit more slowly, but still trending downward. I struggle to find the right balance. My fear is that if I change my diet too much I'll start to gain which is what has happened before.

I had my annual checkup on Monday. I'm looking forward to seeing the results of my labwork-especially cholesterol since that has been slightly elevated in the past. I did get a call from the doctors office yesterday telling me that my sodium level is low. They asked that I limit my intake of water to 6 glasses per day and get retested next week. I have to say that I was not expecting that! I have to think it's because I eat so few packaged foods that are generally loaded with sodium.

If anything over the past few months I've become more committed to the Vegan lifestyle. What I'd like to concentrate on in 2014 is developing an approach to exercise. I'd like to get to the point where I'm naturally moving more throughout the day.


Still On Track

I've been following a "whole food, plant based diet" since mid-May and I'm still going strong. It feels natural for me - I think I was always meant to eat this way. I don't miss meat and it turns out I have not missed any dairy products as I suspected I might.

I have reached my goal weight of 108 and I'm now weighing every other day or so with the goal of staying between 105-110 lbs. (I've also started using the bathroom scale which is not as accurate at the Wii, but so much easier to use and more than adequate at this stage. If it ever breaks, I'll purchase a more accurate model.) So far this seems to be much easier on a vegan lifestyle. Time will tell. I've been at this point several times in my lifetime, but it all starts falling apart after about a year. I'm hopeful that will not be the case this time, but only time will tell.

What I have not kept up with is daily exercise. I know I need to get back into a daily routine and I just have not been able to get there yet. I know I will at some point - I'm just not there yet.

  Good for you!! I started the Vegan lifestyle in August and it's been pretty good - I'm really enjoying it... but I do still miss cheese and that tends to be my biggest craving, sigh. I'm also like you where my exercise is the hardest thing to keep consistent, but I'm trying.

End of First Week Back to Work

It was a good week. Not crazy busy, but a good pace. They did my annual evaluation and I got a raise. That's always nice! Everyone seems pleased that I've decided to stay instead of retiring at the end of June. I'm really happy with that decision too. I had really mixed feelings about leaving - so it's all worked out well. Plus, the extra money is also very nice! :)

The move to assisted living is coming along really well for Mom. Aug 3rd is a definite move-in date. I lined up the movers earlier this week and everyone is OK with that date. We've got 2 weeks to get all the details ironed out - and I think we're in good shape. I went over there this past Wednesday (my normal day off - I only work 4 days/week) and we moved all the stuff that were in the drawers of the 2 dressers she's planning on taking with her. Now we can start placing items she wants to take with her in the drawers. This afternoon I want to see what type linen we might need to get for her and I'll pick it up next week when I do my regular shopping. She's has really come around to the idea that she'll be better off there.

I'm still thinking of buying a Total Gym. I've not made the plunge yet, but once we get Mom moved in, I'll make a decision. I'm hoping it will help me focus when it comes to strength training. I love all the videos and exercise routines on SP, but I don't know how to put it together into a good routine. Anyway, we'll see. I'm not worried about cardio exercises - that will be walking for the most part. And I like the little bit of Yoga that I've done - so I want to continue that too on some kind of regular basis.

Exercise has never been my "thing". Every activity I enjoy, is sedentary for the most part - sewing, knitting, crafts, etc. I enjoy being home and I've been know to come home on Friday evening and not step out again until Monday when it's time to go to work! So, I think it's unrealistic of me to think that I'll be one of these people that will exercise for a couple of hours a day. I try to get in 15-20 minutes of focused exercise per day and that length of time will probably not get too much longer over the next few years. One thing I am doing is trying to be more conscious of how much "normal" walking I do. I wear a FitBit pedometer (I love that little thing), so I do try to hit some targets every day. I'll walk up and down the stair for no particular reason so that I'll reach my daily goal. So that helps too. I don't particularly mind housekeeping chores anymore - I consider a form of exercise and I get something done too!

    emoticon Sounds like you are on the right track. I am also a home body. Once I do my weekly grocery shopping, I do not want to leave home until it is time to go to work. My friends can not believe that I do not want to go shopping with them or just get out and mill around. My Hubby is also a home body, she we enjoy our time together.

I have a treadmill and I really do like the Walk Away the Pounds program. I mix it up and do the one I feel like doing. I also am not big into the exercise scene. I have found on the Spark Exercise Tracker that you can track house cleaning and yard work.

Back to Work

I returned to work yesterday after being off for 2 weeks. It went well - not too crazy. Today will be a busier day plus I have 1 1/2 hours of Continuing Professional Education scheduled which will take a good chunk out of my day. I'll do the best I can.

I got so much done during my 2 weeks off. I've completely scrubbed and reorganized the kitchen. We now have a kitchen that I just love. We dealt with all the little issues that have been bugging me for literally years including replacing the faucet and the under-cabinet lights. I moved all the herbs & spices placed them in the hutch where they are much easier to see. I also put the nuts and seeds in that cabinet. Looks really nice. I made café curtains for the window on the door and the window over the sink and I'm really pleased with the outcome.

I also set up the spare bedroom with only a twin bed for an exercise room. I bought a small inexpensive TV and moved the DVD player so I can watch my exercise videos in there too. We have a small little laptop that I can bring up there to watch exercise videos too. I'm thinking of getting a "Total Gym" that folds up to the size of an ironing board that would really work up there. It would fit very nicely in the closet. I brought in the large stand-up fan from the garage and placed it in the corner to keep things cool since it does tend to get warm upstairs - especially in the late afternoon during the summer. It's working out really well so far. I want to get another small inexpensive table to put in there too - I'll look around at Target tomorrow and see what I can find.

The next big project is getting my mother-in-law moved to an assisted long-term care facility. She has finally agreed to go and I do believe she will be much happier there. I know that her diet will definitely improve which should help her gain weight (she's just a little thing) and will also make her stronger and provide her with more energy. Although my brother-in-law currently lives with her, he is gone a lot of the time and she gets lonely. So, I'm hoping move-in day will be Aug 3rd. Lots of details to iron out between now and then. Luckily her house will still be there so we don't have to deal with all her stuff - just the items she plans to take with her. It could be a real nightmare otherwise!

Kitchen Makeover

I've not been very active on SparkPeople for the past week. Some days I log on just long enough to log my food and exercise. I was off last week and I'm off again this week and my goal is to finish in the kitchen. I'm essentially doing a "late spring" or "early fall" cleaning and I'm reorganizing everything in the process.

I ordered a kitchen island that should be delivered tomorrow. Once that arrives, I'll be able to get everything set up the way I'd like. I washed the windows and made cafe style curtains. I scrubbed the cabinet under the sink and replaced the liner. We replace the nozzle part of the faucet, installed under cabinet lights and installed a small set of hooks for the broom and my apron.

This week I want to finish scrubbing the cabinets, lay down new liner, go through the drawers in the hutch, and finish organizing everything. I still have plenty of fabric left over along with pieces of complementary fabric with which to make pot holders and covers for the toaster and other appliances. I may get a chance to get started on that too.

So, I may not be on the site that much again this week. But I'm still measuring and tracking my food and exercise. Exercise has mostly been housecleaning this past week except for logging steps from my FitBit. That's OK. I'll get back to my regular routine next week when I return to work. I may try to get some Yoga in today - I really miss that!
