Seated core video

Ok, a quick report here...I missed doing a video on Wednesday so yesterday I did the Wed. video, Seated Core exercises.

This is the one that asks you to pull the abdominal area WAY IN in order to make your leg move. First time I did this, I couldn't feel if I was doing anything different! But this week, I DID feel my abs kick in and realized when I was adding leg muscle to this...so I was able to make the leg lift smaller and feel it just happening from the abs. Cool!

The other thing I noticed was that previously I have done the leaning-back abs exercise and let my back curve, rather than keeping it straight as instructed. SO my back muscles have been doing some of the work. Aha! When I keep the back straight, I feel the abs more.

Today I did the Pilates hips and thighs video, and it was definitely easier than last week. I can feel that this is going to be GREAT for those flabby upper leg parts that we love to hate... emoticon

45 minutes cardio, walking to and from Starbucks at 17-minute/mile pace, in pretty chilly temps! It felt like a fairly easy day. I guess I am ready to go to Rome and walk up and down those seven hills!

    OH what videos are you talking about, can you give me the link or whatever. I have back issues and knee ones too so am thinking on trying seated ones for when I just can't do the walking cos of my knee.

I know none of you will misunderstand that title...

I mean cardio, of course! I have a hard time moving my body in the morning. I just would rather do other things. But I read a spark friend's blog this AM and she had done 80-some minutes of exercise. I usually do 30-40, and if I do more than that it's a really good day!

So HOW does she do this? Mornings, I feel sure! Today was a good day for me to try it, since I have most of my hideous paperwork done, and some free time today before I do my choir rehearsal tonight.

I did 3 miles of Leslie Sansone but bumped up the tempo and the intensity since I was playing a CD while watching her moves which gave me faster tempos & lots of energy. I used 2 lb. weights here and there. Classic mile is often boring but today it was NOT, I was sweating much sooner, and ditto the arms focus mile.

I took a tiny break before doing the legs focus mile and used Leslie's music for that, since she has just the right tempo for squats and lunges. And I couldn't help but remember when I started using this DVD, in February of 2010, and found the legs mile so hard. Two years of Leslie has gotten me ready for Coach Nicole, I think.

So some advice for those who find Coach Nicole discouragingly hard - check online for some Leslie Sansone. It is an excellent way to get more of a full-body workout while still doing low-impact. And you can bump it up to some jogging if you like. I am 66 years old and started this at age 64. Anyone can do these DVDs! And Leslie is very encouraging. So if you find yourself losing heart and momentum, give her a try.

Let's see, that was 41 minutes so far today - I am going to add a video and maybe another couple of miles before I go to choir. It's below freezing outside and we're expecting some gentle snow, so indoor walking is perfect for today.

    This is so great - your attitude, your encouragement, your suggestions, and your committment to shake things up by working out in the morning. I am a long time early morning exerciser (except this past week but that is a whole different story, which you already know - thanks for reading my blogs). I agree with another poster, the transition begins at night because it requires going to bed a bit earlier but is SO worth it. It is one of the healthiest habits I have ever adopted. Go, Sara, go!

    Woohoo, you ROCK Sara!!! For me, the only days when I do more than 60 minutes exercise is when I go on a walk or hike. Then I get lots of minutes in one go (but it is difficult to do so much on working days!!!).
Thank you for telling us about Leslie Sansone's DVDs. I might give her a try!

Tired...

This will be REALLY brief.
Tired.
Although a month ago, my running yesterday would have left me much MORE tired...progress...
Today I got home from youth choir and did a fast 1.5 mile walk and followed that up with 14 minutes more walking, unmeasured.
I visited my two neighbors for the first time in two days - one is beginning radiation soon for stage 4 cancer and I really wanted to see her and find out how she is doing.
After fixing dinner, I was tired...but I did get in a 7-minute arms video with Coach Nicole. Somehow I didn't have what it took to do more cardio.
But as instructed by the January Jumpstart challenge, I have eaten LOTS of fruits and veggies today!
So...on the whole, not bad!

    oh my gosh - exercise, and more exercise, plus nutritious food, plus working with kids, plus being the best kind of neighbor - not bad? I disagree. Quite good if you ask me (which, of course, you did not, but that does not often stop me emoticon). I hope you have a wonderful, well deserved night of sleep. emoticon

This will be brief, but I am happy today because I managed to walk/run my 3.09 miles with a speed between 14 & 15 minutes a mile, and I finished up NOT being too tired to do Coach Nicole's 9-minute hips & thighs workout and then I added Leslie Sansone's legs focus mile which has a good number of lunges and squats.

Not TOO shabby!

I was a bit worried that I might not be able to up my cardio...but today I managed the Sansone addition which is mainly cardio. Usually, on the day I run the 3 miles, I don't do any more cardio.

How this will work the rest of the week I don't know, but we shall see!

Blog #2 of the 7-day series for January Jumpstart

Weak ABS? MOI? But I've been doing Leslie Sansone leg lifts, kicks, and crunches, and if I am in my accustomed floor position I can hold a backward lean quite easily...

BUT try it on a ball, babes! Humility enters...

Two big challenge videos for me - Coach Nicole's 12-Minute Seated Core Workout.
Yep, she said, "seated."

That makes it harder! You aren't supposed to use your leg muscles to lift your legs - JUST YOUR ABS. Oh mamma! The first time I did this, I couldn't even feel if my abs were doing anything. And lifting two legs together - ho ho! It's easier lying down doing double-leg lifts...

BUT two days later, boy did I feel my abs in a very deep way.

Second biggee - this was the extra video we were supposed to add in week 2?
I chose (silly me) to experiment with The Ball.

Day 4 New You Bootcamp focusing on abs/core using the stability ball.

It's a New Me, all right!

Once I figured out that I HAVE to wear shoes or my feet slip and I slip right off the ball...well, that was realization # 1!

I did this video twice and second time it WAS easier...with shoes...and I managed to position myself on the ball so that things felt more or less right...

I did the crunches OK...but when the "reaching across the midline" set of crunches began, I just self-destructed. Crunches balancing on a ball and crunches lying on the floor with knees up are two entirely different animals. These ball crunches are FIERCE.

But I am a CAT - hear me RRRRROOOOOOWWWWWWWRRRRR!
Going to try those crunches again this week and see if I can begin to conquer them.

Incidentally, all this roaring is getting me ready to see the Coliseum in Rome where the lions prowled...
But I don't think we get to go in, because I think they are working on it to keep it from falling down and they don't want it to fall on any tourists. I can go along with that. But too bad we don't get to see the space where the lions prowled...

    may I suggest a plank? emoticon It makes a big difference in core strength. I have sure noticed a difference. I began with less than a minute, and I build up an addn 15 seconds at a time (15 seconds feels like a long time while holding a plank emoticon) You are doing such a good job with the workouts - you are getting stronger by the day.....

    i love exercises on the ball, Sara. (except when i fall off it. though even that's ok if i don't fall onto my weights. ow. but finally pretty much better).
we were in Rome (and Pompei!!) in 2010 over Christmas. it was wonderful. and extremely delicious. take your most comfortable shoes (but you already knew that).
