At the Start Line

Sunday, April 11, 2010

I have been reading The Spark for about a week and a half, and I love it! Much of the information was not new to me, but the best thing about it is that it is all put together in a new way that makes complete and total sense to me. I never really thought of these things fitting together in this way.

The part that I struggled reading the most was the Building Block of Public Leadership in chapter five. I built those qualities while in high school and college, and I know that I still possess them. However, I do not utilize them. That really bothered me, and I thought about it for a while. Why don't I use those skills and take more of a leadership role? I then started wondering if maybe carrying this extra weight is my way of avoiding taking on any leadership roles. I know that I have confidence issues. I also want to please everyone, and that's not always easy to do when taking on leadership roles. So the question remains...will I step up and be a leader?

Last night I finished reading the chapter for week one of the four week challenge. Today is the first day of my week one, and I will complete all of the action steps throughout this week. Some of them are already complete...

These are the action steps that I will complete throughout the week...
-Vision Collage
-Take a "before picture"
-Get healthy snacks to keep at work
-Track food daily

During the next week, I am going to commit to small steps. I have the habit of jumping in and going all out, which then makes me lose my motivation quickly because I'm too tired or I'm not reaching the goals I have set for myself. I already made plans to stay after school three, possibly four, days this coming week to exercise. Two of the days are with a student group I am involved with, and one to two of the days are workouts led by a staff member who is a trainer at the YMCA. On the other days of the week, I will either walk outside or I will do Wii Fit and make sure I work up a sweat.

Sounds like a good plan, but don't try to do too much!! Work on one goal at a time & then build on that!! Baby steps!!!!
