Discouraged Today

Saturday, January 17, 2009

I am trying not to define myself by a number on the scale, but I have been exercising every day, watching what I eat, and eating less. I initially lost a pound a day the first two or three days, but I stepped on the scale today, and I am back where I started at the beginning of the week. I don't understand. Don't people usually lose a pound or two a week when tehy are dieting?

Don't let the numbers get you down! Remember, depending on what type of exercise you are involved in, you are building muscle. A pound of muscle takes up less space than a pound of fat. So, you may be losing inches and not pounds. Use how your clothes fit as a measure of your success!

Hang in there! Sometimes you actually gain weight when you start a new thing because your body is freaking a little bit! emoticon Almost every time I start a new way of eating and treating my body better, I loose a pound or two and then gain a pound or two. By the end of the first few weeks, it levels out. At least that is my experience. It helps to really watch the salt intake and lots of fiber!

Woohoo!

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

Woohoo! I ran my first solid mile today in five years (without stopping to walk, although I seriously wanted to at the 1/2 mile mark). I did it at a 12-minute mile pace. I am so happy that I didn't wimp out, give up, and not make the whole distance. I finally did it, and I am proud of me for the first time in a long time. Only two-point-two miles to go, and I will be ready for a full 5K race again. I feel like I am on my way, and hopefully I won't let self-doubt get in the way of attaining my lifestyle reformation goals.

My Cat is Motivating Me to Exercise

Tuesday, January 13, 2009

My cat likes to keep a routine. For the past 4 days, I have gotten up and immediately hit the treadmill. This morning, however, I was feeling sluggish, and I wanted coffee before I went to the basement (where we keep the treamill) to start my daily exercise. When I didn't immediately go downstairs, the cat sat by the door, stared at me, and meowed until I made my way downstairs. He's keeping me in line with my exercise!

Yay, kitty! My cat loves to run around the house when I do, usually when I'm in a frantic rush to get out the door. Like yours, she enjoys her routine, and I marvel at her example: she doesn't eat snacks, she gets exercise everyday, she makes time to give and receive affection, she takes an active interest in the world around her, and she realizes the simple things in life are definitely the best (e.g., a warm sunbeam just in the spot she chose for a nap!)

So glad you have spark kitty--motivation is found in all kinds of places!
