Midweek Update

Monday - AM bike ride, PM zumba class
> DONE! 5 mile road ride in the morning, 60 min zumba class at night, and I even squeezed in a 1 mile jog/walk on the treadmill (with incline) before class! Also did 10 min ab workout using the free "daily ab workout" app.

Tuesday - Running interval workout
>DONE! I love my RunKeeper app. It was super easy to run intervals with the app popping in over my workout songs to tell me to run or walk steady.

Wednesday - Rest
>DOING IT! My legs are feeling the burn of all those workouts. I will do another 10 min ab workout at some point, but I am enjoying wearing regular clothes and feely freshly showered.

Since today is a rest day I'm going to use it to plan meals and diligently count calories. I'm training for a triathlon on August 18 but go back to work August 19 - would love to slim down a little over the next two weeks!

On deck - Thursday swim and run, Friday bike ride (need to up my miles!), Saturday run and zumba.

Workout plan for the week:

Monday - AM bike ride, PM zumba class
Tuesday - Running interval workout
Wednesday - Rest
Thursday - Swim 500m, Run 1.5mi (brisk)
Friday - Bike ride
Saturday - Zumba, Run 45 min (easy pace)
Sunday - Rest

Getting excited for my triathlon - I really feel like I'm preparing myself well! I just need these thunderstorms to let up and not interfere with swimming plans.

Training for my first Triathlon

One of my coworkers signed up for a ladies-only triathlon, and it sounded like a neat experience so I signed up, too! It's a 400 meter swim, 9 mile bike ride, and 3.1 mile run.

I have run 5Ks, 8Ks, and 10Ks. I have never, EVER swam or biked competitively. However, the race organizers assured us that this is all about empowerment and having fun - they don't care if you water jog, ride slow, or walk/run the 5k run. The fact that it is for women only was a major plus for me!

I started incorporating swimming and biking into my workouts, and now that the race is one month away I'm following a beginner's training plan to prepare.

Yesterday I did a "brick" - bike ride followed by a run. It was easier than I thought! My one major concern is the heat - I have been running on treadmills and the indoor track and I really need to do some outdoor training or else I will melt in the August heat. Today is a run-only workout, and tomorrow a long swim.

Does anyone have any advice for first-time triathletes?

    I was thinking about signing up for that triathlon in 2014 or 2015 after I conquer the marathon. I wouldn't think the heat would affect your performance too much with the swim and bike ride. Just get in as many 5Ks outside as you can between now and then to acclimate your body. If you hydrate well throughout you should be o.k. Excited for you :o) Can't wait for your race report!

Baby Girl's First Birthday!

My gorgeous girl turned 1 on July 11!

We did a butterfly party and it was completely DIY - patting myself on the back for that one. I rented a park shelter but there was 80% chance of thunderstorms so backup plan was our (small) house. I made butterfly shaped fruit skewers, butterfly decorations, and a butterfly cake. One of our friends brought pasta salad with butterfly shaped pasta! It was crowded, crazy and loud but very fun and she loved her presents.

I love my little Sophie and can't believe a whole year has gone by since her birth.

10K Results!

I live near Richmond, VA and this was my fourth time participating in the Ukrop's Monument Ave 10k.

2010 - 1 hour, 46 minutes
2011 - 1 hour, 51 minutes
2012 - 1 hour, 34 minutes (ran 4 miles, walked 2 miles - I was 6 months pregnant and just happy to finish!)

this year I met my goal of not talking any walking breaks, and my time was


To be honest, I was hoping to be a little faster, but I'll take it. My pace was 12:44 minute miles on average (when I did an 8k back in November my pace was 12:30). I got a killer stitch in my side at the beginning of mile 5, so it slowed me down a lot. Thankfully I was able to get water, and after drinking it slowly I felt much better and was able to finish strong.

I started training back in February - through snow, rain, and freezing temperatures. Today was sunny and warm and beautiful.

The Monument Ave 10k is quite the event - about 40,000 participants run along a gorgeous, flat course with spirit groups and bands cheering the whole way. Many people run in costumes, too, which is entertaining for sure.

My five year old ran his first mile race! I am so proud of him - he was in the youngest age group and he ran the whole thing in about 11 minutes!

    Congats!!!! you are showing that you can improve and over come over a period of time. I can walk a mile in 16 mins. I am far from where you are right now but seeing this helps me know that if I can keep trying I can get there.
