Goals for 2013

I know, this blog is a little late. I feel like every year I make these said "goals" and never follow through. To be completely honest, I am so fed up and I want to be HEALTHY.. being skinny will just be a plus.

In October, my grandmother passed away. At first, she came down with pneumonia, which did not seem to let up. As far as we knew, she only had high blood pressure and was 77 years old. Ended up she had lung disease, so she was not able to take deep breathes that you need to in order to get rid of the pneumonia. She was overweight and did not do much besides go out to eat with some ladies from church and watch Lifetime movies. I was there when they weighed her at the hospital and she was around 185-- and she said that she must have LOST a lot of weight. At 185, that is still technically obese according to her BMI. Before we even knew about the lung disease, the Doctors were telling us that since she did not have a history of being active or eating well, that it would be HARDER for her to recover.

That was when it hit me-- could this be me one day? Could I get sick and it would take me longer to recover due to my poor choices and unhealthy lifestyle? The truth is, it probably could be if I keep going down the path I have been. There has never been a better excuse to start taking the steps in the HEALTHY direction, so here is my plan:

1. Learn to cook.

I hate to speak ill of my mother, but she was not the best cook. I do not even remember having dinner every night. When I was a teenager, dinner was rarely made and it was pretty much fend for yourself. Instead of learning how to cook myself, I went out to eat with my friends or ate at work (I worked at Dunkin Donuts all through High School). I think that I got my laziness from her, and I need to break that habit FAST. The passed couple of years I have gotten better-- I make breakfast, soup, even lasagna! The next thing I want to conquer is cooking meat. I baked chicken breasts like a month ago for the first time and they did not come out half bad!


2. Become a yoga master

Okay, maybe not a MASTER-- but really good! I have NEVER been flexible ever.. so I want to be able to fold like a pretzel. I want to be able to stand on my head and balance myself in crazy positions. I think this is a great goal because I will become flexible and strong. Yoga is not to bad when trying to bring your stress level down, either. emoticon


3. Lead a more active lifestyle

I do not want to sit in front of a computer all day. That is what I do at work! I do not want to watch TV all day. I want to get out and DO things. This passed summer I went surfing (hurt my knee and have a $680 dr's bill, but hey!). I just went roller skating the other day. I go out dancing with my friends. I want to continue this, but do more. Instead of going shopping or out to eat, I want to do ACTIVITIES. On top of this I have my COAST to COAST challenge (check out my earlier blog for those deets). For the first part of my fitness journey, I want to do cardio at least 4X a week and ST 2X until I get to around 130lbs. Once I get there, I want to switch it: ST 4X a week and cardio 2X.


4. Eat Clean

I also want to look at a doughnut and not even think twice about wanting it-- I want to be able to overcome those cravings. I want to crave fruit and vegetables. I want to take things into my body that will make me strong so I can do those yoga poses. I got Tosa Reno's cookbook and one of my favorite blogs, ohsheglows.com, should be coming out with a cookbook sometime in 2013, so I can kill two goals with one stone (#1 and #4).


5. Wake up at sunrise

Another factor of my laziness is not being able to wake up in the morning. For example, this morning I wanted to wake up at 8am to go to the gym and take a cycle class.. but I was lazy and wanted to sleep on my day off. I want to be an early riser. I looked at the times of sunrise in Philadelphia, and right now it is around 7:20am. In the summertime it is like 5 something-- yikers.


I think these are all achievable goals if I have discipline with myself. Come back to see my progress!

Today is the start of my coast to coast challenge. That means, so long Santa Cruz!




I will miss your beautiful scenery..



.. the boardwalk...



... and your fresh Farmers Market.



Santa Cruz, California was founded in 1769 by Spanish explorer Don Gaspar de Portola. The weather is mild all year, which is great for water sports including sailing, diving, swimming, paddling, and surfing. I have heard it is bit of a college town, since you can find the University of California there. Ahh, if only I could really live there.. dare to dream, dare to dream.

I am a very poor swimmer and it is one of the two cardio workouts I am allowed to do for the next month ( I might make it two just to give my knee time to heal). When I went to the gym today, I decided to start slow. I Googled how many laps a mile would be.. and it is around 72 "lengths" for a mile. Half of that would be 36.. and half of 36 is 18. I made my goal 18 lengths so I could log that I swam a quarter mile.

Let me be honest, I did not SWIM the whole time. for the first 8 lengths I ran down the pool (in the water) as a warm up then proceeded to swim one length, then run back the other until I got to a total of 18. I REALLY need to work on my breathing for that one. On a good note, my abs feel like I did 100 crunches!

Anyone have any swimming tips for a beginning swimmer?

Watch out Vegas-- Here I come! 510.75 miles to go... emoticon

    Swimming is hard. I want to start getting back into it, it's just kinda of intimidating to go to a big pool. I might check out the UW pool some night after classes when it's not so busy.

My trick for remembering which lap I'm on, keeping my mind occupied, and giving my brain a workout is think of words of each letter of the alphabet. So the first lap I think of A words, then B words, and so on. It gets annoying after awhile, but helps me at least for awhile...

No advice for swimming. Just start and keep going and give yourself rest when you need it. Maybe pick a slower time at the pool??

Well not much change since last time, and yes I am to blame. I stopped keeping track of food like two weeks before the Holidays and look what I got, a six pound gain and more inches. I was actually hovering around 143 all holiday season, so I think that the 146 was due to too much pizza on NYE. Today I tracked most of what I ate, so I am pretty sure I am at least below the 2k cal mark for today. I did some yoga which I have not done in a while. The agenda for the rest of the night is to plan food for tomorrow and see when I can fit in work outs for the rest of the week, then enjoy some green tea.

Coast to Coast Challenge

About a year ago, I saw how a fellow Sparker had a team of people doing a "Run Around the World" group challenge where everyone would log their miles to get "Around the World." I decided then to start my own challenge of a "Coast to Coast" type challenge, but I never completed this and lost the papers with all of my mileage on it.

Have no fear Sparkies! I have created a NEW route and starting TOMORROW I will start logging my mileage. This includes biking, elliptical, swimming, running, walking-- anything that logs miles while I exercise. Here is my route:

This is going to take me a while, heck it might take me YEARS. I am so ready for this challenge! Every time I reach a point in my journey, I will let you know!

    How super cool! I seem to remember at one point someone telling me there was a website where you could log mileage and a route and it would tell you cool things about where you were but I can't find it. Maybe if you google it you could find it and use it to enter in your mileage! Good luck!

Wowza. I told myself in 2010 I would never let myself look like this again. Yikes!

I have been tracking my food for the past couple of days. I am not staying completely in my ranges, but it is definitely an eye opener. No surprise I take in too much sugar and carbs, but I was surprised to see that I don't take in enough potassium! Looks like I will see more bananas in my near future! Happy December everyone!   You are well on your way by posting these pics! I avoid the scale, avoid mirrors, seemingly unconsciously avoid certain clothes in my cupboard etc when I have put on any weight. And then carrying on because I am in denial
