better than microwave!

Saturday, September 22, 2012

after reading about the dangers of microwave popcorn on "eat this not that" web site, i have quit buying it. but i love popcorn. so i bought some popcorn and organic coconut oil (recommended by a nice lady in the store) and set out to make my popcorn. i think i was more surprised by the fact that it was as fast or faster than microwave. isn't that why we buy microwave, fast and easy? but non microwave was fast and easy and i didn't have to worry about chemicals. i had read several articles that talked about the microwavable bags being coated in nonstick chemicals that have been linked to thyroid disease, male infertility, and high cholesterol. Plus, companies sometimes add artificial colors and flavoring to microwavable popcorn.

i used a pan with a lid that was vented and put about a tbsp of coconut oil and a quarter cup of corn. two or three mins later i had popcorn. fast and easy. i love buttered but i put a little seasoned salt on it and it was great. i am very happy to get my popcorn back!

thank you for your comments and support. i did read you can do regular popcorn in the microwave too PMFISH and want to try that. also, my sister told me her husband clarifies butter to fry his eggs in. i googled "how to clarify butter" and it sounds easy. plus it said you can pop your corn in the clarified butter since it doesn't burn like unclaritied does and the part you take out is great on the popcorn after it's popped.

I use the coconut oil in a regular paper bag and it pops just great in the microwave. Got that tip from Dr. Oz.

diabetes and sugar

Thursday, February 02, 2012

i take care of someone who has diabetes. i try to educate myself and her family about what she should and should not eat. the biggest mistake i think her family makes is they put all their attention on sugar. she is not allowed to eat sugar and they buy a lot of "sugar free" items. following this way of doing things, this woman was obese and had very low and very high sugar readings. i have spent the past five years getting them to forget sugar and think carbs.

the endocrinologist i take her to said very simply that you should eat about 30 carbs per meal four times per day. people who are dieting or diabetic (or both) frequently try to cut out carbs. i am one of those few who say not to cut out anything. carbs are important and give us energy. what we want to do is eat better carbs. i can give my client a large slice of cake and a soda. prob 30 carbs or close. or i can give her a bowl of oatmeal with cinnamon and a small glass of almond milk also about 30 carbs. one is very health and the other is not. the point is to plan your meals, shoot for 30 carbs andtry to make them good carbs.

Though research is limited on artificial sweeteners, eating too much of these types of chemically treated sugars has been linked to adverse side effects including stomach upset, blood sugar control issues and increased risk of some types of cancer instead of sugar free foods which are usually real foods replaced with chemicals it is a better idea to work sweets into your plan. if you have three very healthy meals about 30 carbs each, your evening snack can be a small slice of cake with a glass of low fat milk or almond milk. have the real cake instead of the sugar free cake. the taste is definately better and the overall food for the day is good.

my client has lost a lot of weight and her sugar readings no longer have extreme highs and lows. the two main differences in her diet is: a) no sugar free items and b) replace processed food with real food.

i am reading a lot about what is in our food. articles about foods we eat every day that we should never touch. like can tomatoes. something about the acid in the tomatoes and the can causing a chemical reaction. things like how the hamburgers that are served at fast food places are made. the fact the yummy creamy filling in your twinkie is made with shortening. i think this is horrible but the worst part is that our gov't has put their stamp of approval on all of this. the FDA and USDA and EPA all gov't agencies that cost millions of dollars to run and according to them, the food we eat is "safe".

yes. not only "how can they allow this" but how did we let the gov't have so much control over our lives?

ppl i talk to say, "but what are we supposed to eat?" the truth is, so much of our diet is made up of this processed food, the animals (beef, fish, chicken, etc) which are injected with growth hormones and antibiotics, the "fresh" food, veggies and fruits, are sprayed with pesticides. think about the report they did on the morning news show about how young girls are going thru puberty at astonishingly young ages (maybe all the growth hormones in the food they eat?) think about the antibiotic resistant bugs out there? think that might have something to do with the amount of antibiotics we are ingesting thru our food?? think about the rise in the number of children with ADD ADHD and autism. the chemicals in our food? the pesticides in our food and drinking water?

how did our country get here? our gov't is running on loans from china and our hard earned money is spent on junk imported from that same country. what sense is that?

millions of dollars are spent by our gov't on programs like medicare, medicaid, schools, farm aid, etc. and millions of those dollars go straight into politicians pockets, scammers pockets, and even other governments. millions of dollars are going into the school system. i heard that it cost over $6,000 per student per year. i have 2 problems with that. why so much? and why are the schools broke and closing programs and even schools themselves?

our food and water is poisoned and approved by a gov't that's corrupt and/or ineffective. and yet we voted into ofc ppl that said they would cut spending and the second they tried, everyone starting screaming "omg, you can't cut THAT!"

we are in trouble people. wake up and smell the coffee. don't drink it, it probably has chemical additives in it. that's why it costs so much.

You are telling the truth alright. The greatest nation in the world has worked its way in to a sad state. I just don't think we have hit bottom yet to get enough people to say "enough already." emoticon

do not apologize at all for going on about it. it is a damn shame. you talk about the ones at the top and it reminds me of the asses in our gov't that refused to give a small cost of living raise to the old and disabled but voted raises for themselves. the old and disabled are trying to live on pennies while those asses make huge salaries. but they need their freaking raise.

We have same problem here in UK.Yet those who are on the top of the pile thrive private schools for their kids ski ing holidays every year for their little so and sos while our kids have to share books computors etc pay to travel to school pay for all the school trips.Local councillord get 3000 before they even set foot out of the house our councils can pay horendous amounts for a council functions no pie and peas for them only the best the kids at schools get second rat crap to eat.Us on the working trail have to pay all these taxes to keep them in their so called jobs anybody can sit on a council and play sheep vote for whatever the majority says to hell with the little person. They stopped disabled car parking in our are so its 3 to park closed all the loos but wouldn't put a 20p slot on them because they would have to pay someone to empty the slots yet if you pee down an alley way and get caught it's a 300 fine. And whats worse the ones who make the biggest noise is the ones who won't get of their fat butts to vote. Sorry gone on a little but like you it really ps u off emoticon

oprah calls it the "aha moment". it's the modern term for epiphany. you would think they are great. that moment when you realized something you think you should have known all along or at least a long time ago but you just now got it. i had one recently. we have our memories of our past and they are real. aren't they? or are they your memories of your past the way you remember it. they are memories from your point of view. what if someone else has the same memory but not the same? what if you remember your mother. you were close. you were torn apart and spent the rest of your childhood clinging to those memories. of a mother who loved you and of course wants you back. but what if her memories are of a hard life. a single mom with four kids. then two are gone and she moved on with her life. did you spend your whole childhood clinging to a memory of a childhood fantasy? would you like to ask her? is it too late? did she die before you got that "aha"? maybe you don't need to ask any questions. maybe you know the answer. maybe those were just the memories of a child.

don't write it down!

Thursday, May 12, 2011

i think everyone who has dealt with weight problems for any length of time knows that one of the things you are supposed to do is write down all the food you eat each day. i am so impressed with the food tracker on this site! you don't have to look up the nutritional facts. just enter your food and it calculates it all automatically. isn't that just wonderful? and yes that was sarcasm. if you are going to track the food you eat you figure one thing out real fast. you can't eat fast food and lose weight. i thought i did a couple of things to make my meal healthier. i had a burger hold the mayo, a fry and an unsweet tea. i still went way over on calories, fats, salt, everything. my advice has to be don't write it down if you don't want to know!
