Crazy couple of weeks

Thursday, July 26, 2012

It has been a really crazy couple of weeks. We have been working some 10 hour days and saturday. My wife and I have been car shopping which we managed to get completed. Still trying to get the remodeling done, but hard with every thing else going on. Hopefully we won't work this Saturday and I can get some more done.

Amish trip

Wednesday, July 11, 2012

Well our trip last week through some of Ohio's Amish country was sort of a disappointment. I mean some of the things we saw and some of the places to shop were pretty cool, but also a lot of commercialized business as well. I guess I wanted to see more self reliant stuff, not all the arts and craft stuff ( which I have no idea what arts and crafts for the home has to do with Amish ) On the bright side I have some cousins that live around there who said next time we come up they will show us where to go. Sad thing about it is that I saw a special on TV talking about how commercialized it has become driving up the price of land. Now the Amish can no longer afford to buy the land to live there. Almost as commercialized as Christmas, which shouldn't be to much longer before some of our bigger retailers start setting up trees. I mean it is almost August!!!! LOL

Back in Indiana, there are some authentic Amish areas too. I'm not sure now though - haven't been in a while! Will remember that for Ohio though. Now you're making me crave some Shoofly pie! (Or maybe my long run this morning is doing that LOL)

Wow, I think we went to some Amish places in Iowa when I was a kid. I just remember this really cool clock store! I hate the fact that Christmas trees are up right after halloween, it is like thanksgiving does not exist! I say something every year about it, but it just keeps getting worse.

It is just so sad that things get so commercial. It takes away from the authenticity of things.

Hoepfully on a future visit you will be able to see the Amish Country you hoped to see.

There were quite a few Amish where I grew up. My dad used to "trade" with them. We used horses to do most of the farm work and he would need harnesses fixed and went to the Amish if he couldn't do it himself. I've never thought of their community as a tourist trap.

Here in Michigan, we have some very active Amish areas. My son LOVES the Amish baked goods and hardware store! The prices are amazingly cheap. They still drive the is such a unique way of life.
I am sorry you didn't get to experience it more.
Ohio, huh?

Yes, its all about the mighty dollar. When retailer jumps ahead with holidays, I am sick of the holiday before its starts. I understand why they do this, but it takes away the meaning of them. What does your Ohio team look like this year? emoticon

Two thumbs up

Tuesday, July 03, 2012

Ok I admit it I was really skeptical of those upside down plant growing containers you see advertised all the time. By skeptical I mean I would never spend money on that gimmick. Well my mom bought me one from the dollar store. My first thought was that she had wasted her money, but I had extra pepper plants and thought I might as well try it. Much to my amazement, it has worked pretty good. I planted jalopenos and cayenne peppers in it. Have taken 4 jalopenos off it so for. The one down side is that you do need to water it quite frequently (we know how I feel about watering) but if you have limited space to grow stuff I would recommend this. I have 7, yes that's right 7, plants in that little basket. That is a lot of garden space hanging in a little basket.

Can you hear me now

Monday, July 02, 2012

OK I thought I lived a pretty simple life until this weekend proofed me wrong. I found out that I'm addicted to Sparkpeople.
We have been camping since Friday. Unfortunately the pop up shower the weather man talked about was actually a major storm that covered half the state and took out the power lines and phone lines on its way through. ( Some how that 200 mile bleep was missed on radar) We had no electric for a day and still have no internet service. I know who would believe that you can camp without wifi. Well not me. I need to get on Sparkpeople. Finally after A couple of days without it I came home so I could catch up. Hopefully they will get the phone lines out there fixed soon so I don't have to come home tomorrow.
We have had one bad storm every day since Friday. Lost a couple blackberries plants, but they will bounce back next year and for all the strong wind there was also rain which we badly needed. Hopefully now we will be able to have fireworks on the 4th.
My point though is, I need my internet service. Can they hear me now!

Yup! can relate! I have a camp in the Maine woods and it's an hour drive to the closest village. The library keeps an outdoor plug for people trekking the AT and sparkers like me, so we can dial in to civ.

HAHAHAA, that is hilarious!! At least it is a healthy addiction!! Sorry to hear about your power. I have a friend who lives in Central Ohio but it on vacation in Europe and was sending me pics of her house! Holy Mother did you guys get hit down there. In Northeastern Ohio we had about 10 mins of rain on Friday and yesterday about 15. We got really lucky. Hopefully the storms are done! Enjoy your trip!

My power was out from Friday evening until last night about 10:30. So two full days. There was a silver lining though. My two kids and husband and I spent some quality time together since there was no tv or video games or computer to distract. :)

The thing about it too that was bad was that it took so little to cripple Central Ohio. You have to wonder about how strong the infrastructure really is.

Comin through, loud and clear. I wondered if you were hit by the storms. Glad the damage wasn't too bad. And...I am pretty sure SparkPeople gives some sort of subliminal message to sign-on, sign-on, sign-on, because I too, cannot go one day without "connecting"!

Going to be hot

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

OK I had to break a couple of rules today. First I never water my garden. An old neighbor once told me that if you water your garden the roots stay shallow. If you don't water the roots will go deep and find water and you will have a stronger plant. The second is if you must water never done it at night, but tomorrow is suppose to be a very hot day and we haven't had any rain in a while. They are saying 100+ with high humidity the next couple of days. Great!!!
On a positive side I had to stop to get a waterer for the garden so I ran by Aldi's as well while I was near it. Loaded up on fruit. PEaches, nectarines, plums, strawberries, and blueberries were all $.99 put the berries in the freezer. Also got watermelon and cantaloupe. Was really pleased with those deals.

    It's still raining here. emoticon

You scored big at Aldi's! I'm not finding any berries for less than $2. But that's because it's still cool and wet here. Guess that's the tradeoff.

Did you finish up all your home projects? We're restoring an old house, so every weekend and evening it's something else to do to keep with the contractor. Luckily we've got a really good one.

I have heard to never water after 8PM. IF you water during the day, more water evaporates rather than soak into the ground. (I bought the same fruit and Aldis. they have great produce)
