Why did I volunteer

Saturday, June 09, 2012

Ok so it is now Saturday morning and I'm getting ready for work wondering why I volunteered. What was I thinking? I could still be sleeping. Sounded like such a good idea when I did it, now not so sure. Oh well today is a easy day, I'll be on a forklift today, scary thought, moving stuff around. Everyone have a great day.

I have this volunteering problem too. It's always the need to be useful that lures me into it and the thought of the extra money that makes it bearable. I feel proud I have quite vigorously avoided volunteering on my current job though. Really proud!

Who are you neighbors

Wednesday, June 06, 2012

Sitting here ready an article on passive solar homes. Strange how they make it sound like a new idea. House with southern facing windows with overhangs or porches to help block sun as it rises and gets hot. open flow plan so if you open windows it cools the house. New idea they say except every older home around here was built that way, but anyway it made me think about front porches.
I remember when I first brought my wife to small town America. She used to laugh because you always waved to everyone. somebody drove by, you waved, they waved back. She would say who was that, you respond, I don't know. Then why did you wave she would ask. Just being neighborly.
But aside from waving to everyone I remember sitting on the front porch talking to your neighbors. You see all this new construction with no porches. They have fenced in back yards for entertaining. I know if you ask a lot of people who their neighbors are they don't have a clue.
So as I look at what they call new ideas I think to myself that maybe our forefathers knew what they were doing, plus they knew their neighbors.

You are so right.. I miss the front porches. You dont need to know who's waving.. ya just wave back - or passing each other on the road.. the steering wheel 2 fingers wave. I really miss that to. I grew up in the prairies (western Canada) and it is still like that there... I go back to visit and its like stepping back in time. In the best way possible though. Thanks for reminding me.. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

No front porches, and windows that only open on the bottom (?) ... or worse not at all... is what air conditioning bought!

I'm the only house in the 'hood that doesn't have a fenced in back yard... its mandatory in this town to have a fence. I got an exception as my house backs onto a bikepath/creek/park. The downside is that I've had my share of Peeping Toms, bu that's why I've got Starr.

It is a bit sad that folks don't get to know one another anymore. Well, I can say that where we live in Mexico it's still a small village and everyone says "Bunes Dias" even if they don't know you. It's very friendly. I like that!
Have a great day.

That's typical in the south (waving to everyone) even if you don't know who they are. Where I grew up, all your neighbors brought food time as a family member died. You never had to cook anything as you inundated with food of every type possible.

LOL!!!! Oh, yes. The farmer's head nod in lieu of a wave cause they were lugging a bail of hay and they couldn't wave.......

Everything old in new again.....

Tobacco / nicotine free at last

Saturday, June 02, 2012

First off let me say thank you to all who sent emails concerned about me.
I'm fine. Last week was just one of those really busy weeks where you seem like you need about 50 hours in a day to get everything done. I did manage to finish getting my garden out and it is doing well.
Ok so this week I came off the nicotine gum. Oh mine, Felt really tired and wore out for the first three days. The same way I felt when I went from the tobacco from the gum. So it wasn't a real productive week. lots of sleep until life returned to normal. So now I can say I'm feeling great again and I'm tobacco/nicotine free. Hard to believe how it could effect the body so much, but now that it is finally out of my system lets see what good we can do. Took 6 weeks to break that habit, but I achieved my goal.

Weekly update (day 14)

Friday, May 18, 2012

Well lets see. Today is day 14 of no tobacco. One more week of the gum. Was tired earlier this week. Don't know if it was because of the nicotine withdrawal or what by feel great today. Hopped on the scales to see how bad it was. No weight loss, but no weight gain either.. WOO HOO. Have not been as motivated the last couple of weeks. Again I hope this is just because of the withdrawal, but as I said today I feel like my old self, so now I can get moving again.

fresh strawberries

Tuesday, May 15, 2012

Went out and checked my strawberries today and have some nice ripe ones. Also have cauliflower ready to be tied up. Today is what I consider our safe frost date so now I'll plant the rest of my garden.

Oh, yes. I remember getting up at 7 AM and picking strawberries ... for 3 hours.... everyday. (We had a big patch) Then planting potatoes ... in a lightening storm. And being attacked by a herd of bees while weeding. The fun of farming....
