My Fantastic Week End

Wednesday, November 02, 2011

On Wednesday, I received a call from Dale (brother in Michigan) asking if I would like company this week end. Of course I said yes. They got an unexpected chance to come down with another couple. Friday evening, I picked them up in Springfield---a 45 minute drive from here.

Saturday we had a family dinner already planned so they got to attend that plus my son and daughter in law got to come over to see them. I had 17 here for chili dinner. All 4 of my kids and their families/spouses were able to come see them.

Sunday after church, I took them to George Washington Carver National Park. We walked for about 2 hours.

Monday I took them through the tornado areas of Joplin. While tooling around, we passed the low vision place. Dale said can you stop in there--so I did a quick stop and pulled in there. Sue (my sister in law) is sight impaired and legally blind. She had lost her good sturdy white cane so they wanted to see if possibly they could but another one. The man had a white cane that was also a walking cane that had been turned back to them by another family. He gave the cane to Sue free. She is absolutely thrilled with this cane as it gives her support for walking as well as being white. Then we went to some thrift stores. On the way home we stopped at the Precious Moments Chapel and Museum. More walking---about 2 hours worth total for the day.

After getting home Monday evening, we decided to go to Branson to meet the couple that they came down with and since I had free tickets to Yakov Smirnoff's dinner theater. A very good show put on by the Moscow Circus which included a dinner. It was a ballet type show. After this show, Dave ( who they came down with) got us free tickets to see The Texas Tenors. Fantastic show with all different types of music including some opera. It was mostly country and some rock. This group had won the America's Got Talent Contest in 2009. We had gotten a motel for the night and nearly got lost getting back to the motel---we were bushed.

This morning I took them back to Springfield where the headed for home.

Since today is my daughter's birthday and several of the casinos give free play on one's birthday, we headed out to the casinos. I came home with $60 more than I left with.

This has been the most fantastic 6 days that I can remember in a long long time.

I am so grateful to God for arranging the time to spend with my brother and sister in law and all the other great blessings He bestowed on me over the past 6 days.

And I thought I was going to have a nice quiet laid back weekend!!!!!!!!!!!

I left the house at 7 AM to go to the fall TOPS rally. It was a good rally and I won one of the prizes. The "fun" began after I got home.

About 5:20 PM, Maria (daughter) called me from work and informed me that he husband had blacked out earlier and she was worried about him--then she began crying and sobbing.

So I went and got her. We left her car there.

After getting back to her house, I told my son in law to get his shirt and shoes on because he was going to the ER. He wouldn't go earlier for her. He must have not been feeling good because he did. We spent the next 3 1/2 hours in the ER. He has a severe sinus infection which caused his oxygen levels to drop causing the momentary black out spell. He has asthma.

After leaving the ER, we stopped to get her car. The lady who was called in to relieve Maria was drunk and very angry. She started yelling across the store at Maria, telling Maria it was her day off and Maria should be there working. She ranted for over 30 minutes while other customers were in the store. Another customer heard he call Maria a "bitch". She said a sinus infection wasn't reason enough to take the night off---as if Maria had planned this. Maria called their store manager about this lady's behavior. Apparently she had been carrying on like this for several hours. They found an empty beer can in the trash. The lady only had 3 pizza orders all evening and she messed them up. Now I have to write up a note about this lady's behavior so they can terminate her.

Anyway--I did not make good choices yesterday. At the TOPS rally all they had for us to eat were hot dogs, white buns, BBQ beans, and potato chips. Not very healthy for a weight management club. The program was good but the food choices were horrible.

I got home after 11 PM..

That was my day..

    HI Elsie -
wow, I can totally empathize with sinus pain and infection but thankfully I've never blacked out (I don't have asthma as far as I know...).

And yea, TOPS can be kinda weird with their foods. That was one reason I eventually bailed, because my group knew my dietary needs included no pork, no shellfish, allergies and all of that, and yet they'd persist in ordering ham this or pork that at all the picnics or holiday meals etc.

For the Rally's, I never got to participate because they were always on Saturdays and I already have weekly commitments on Saturday... but being an officer for a brief interval, I was aware of the planning. Typically they'd hit up grocery stores etc for food donations. And what do the grocery stores donate? Healthy foods? Oh no, those are expensive! They'd donate that cheap white bread junk that were just sitting on the shelves because no one else wanted to buy cheap junky white bread, and so on down the list - pop instead of fruit juice.... sugar ladened snacks instead of fruits and veggie trays, the whole shootin' match.

So i guess TOPS needs to be more assertive/aggressive in asking for healthier foods, or go to more places to get the healthier foods donated (like if one store only wants to donate $100 of junk food, but they might consider $100 of a veggie or a fruit - that might not go as far in feeding 100 or 200 people. But if they went to another store and got $50 or 100 worth of some veggies or whatever - just went to more stores to finally get enough of the appropriate foods, it could work out...

In any case... there were some other shenanigans going on and friction with my family and so I ended up bailing out of TOPS altogether.

Hope it works out better for you in the future!

That is crazy about the food at the TOPS rally. My TOPS group usually brown bags lunch because the food at the rally is not that healthy. I have always thought it was strange the choices that are served at rallies.

Praying your sil feels better. Sorry you had to go through that nastiness.

Elsie, sorry you had such a bad day! I'm glad your son in law decided to go get help at the ER, low O2 and asthma are nothing to play around with.. I feel bad for Maria too, that wasn't called for on that other woman's part. Praying for you and your family. Hugs, Melody

Hard to say what motivated this person's behavior but it sounds as though her life is out of control. Add her to your prayer list, it sounds as though she needs it. I'll add her to mind and thank the Lord your son-in-law is going to be okay.

More and more people see life as only about them. They have little to no empathy or consideration for others. I'm sorry you had to endure such nastiness on top of worry about your son in law. But even when we only get mildly annoyed with circumstances that are brought about by others, often we have NO idea what they are going through and we all really need to THINK before we react. There is no good way to deal with someone like that except to make your behavior match what God would want from you and leave the other person to his/her own hatefulness. Jo

walk DJ 5 of 7 days

The most fantastic thing this week was Maria hearing from Andy. We haven't heard from him since 1994. He is my first grandchild. Maria placed her boys up for adoption in 1994 and was under court order to not to attempt to contact them until they were 18. We have been looking for them for 7 years now ever since Andy turned 18, he is 25 now. We hope to get to Michigan to see him sometime soon. We will continue to look for the other 3 boys who are young men now...Tommy is 23, Joshua is 22, and Jamie is 21.

God has really blessed our family this week.
