Back Home Now

Wednesday, November 14, 2012

I finally got home about 8 PM CST tonight after waiting 5 or 6 hours for them to do the discharge.

I guess they aren't real fond of someone demanding explanations, what for's, and why for's.

After I told them I was very frustrated with not being told what was happening, why certain tests/procedures were done, and what meds I was on--they decided to discharge me..........lol..

I did get lots of information from both the medical dr. and the surgeon. 3 med students came in my room with the med doctor but not one of them asked to listen to my lungs or tummy. They just stood at the end of the bed and watched.

I will have home health services for a while because the dressings need to be changed every day.

Doing good for now............Elsie

Home health services are great! My sister had that when she was needing extra care but not needing to be in the hospital. The nurse planned her visits for when I would come to check on my sister so things were taken care of as needed. I was still teaching and my sister was nearing the end of her life here.

So glad yours are temporary and then you will be on your own. Being independent at this time of our lives is really important for our well being.

Home health care is such a blessing when it is needed. DD is an LPN and doesn't think she could do that; I think it would be wonderful myself, but that is just the difference in our personalities, I guess.

I am glad you got to come home, and good for you for questioning!

Saved by God and His Angels!!!!

Tuesday, November 13, 2012

I have been in the hospital since Wednesday Nov. 7. That evening I was having more severe abdominal pain. I called Valerie and told her...she came right over and took me to the emergency room. They did all the normal labs and xrays for abdominal pain/discomfort. Everything (all labs and xrays) were normal so the ER doctor was going to give me something for pain and then we were going home.

At the last minute (the grace of God), he decided to do a CT scan of my abdomen. Then the real problems began. Imagine our surprise when he came back and said "you are going to emergency surgery" for a perforated bowel with an umbilical hernia repair.

After the pre ops were given and I was taken into surgery, they had a problem intubating me for the anesthesia. I ended up being transferred to Joplin by ambulance, put in ICU on a ventilator. I had tubes everywhere. My trachea was swollen so I was on the ventilator for 3 days until the swelling went down.
I was in ICU for 4 days. While in ICU, I went into atrial fib which took 2 days to resolve.

Due to another patient going bad, I was moved to a cardiac room at 3:30 Monday morning.

Now, because a med student freaked out because I had a 100.4 temp, I am here for a couple of more days because she was convinced that an infection has started. My temp has been normal every other time.

Someone ordered an ultra sound of my heart today so it was decided that I now have CHF. So here I still am.....

I am healing well without pain and am able to play "toot city" real well..........lol

I have not read all the posts yet........time to close for now.........Elsie

Oh, Elsie! Yes, God was watching over you! I am so glad that you had good care even if it was by accident, or God's intervention.

Thanks for telling me about your blogs.

Elsie! What a terrible time you've had. Thank heavens the Dr decided to do the CAT!
What dreadful pain you must have been in before they discovered it all. I hope you are feeling better and that your throat feels better. I'm a Respiratory therapist so the ventilator is my forte. I'm really sorry you had such a bad time. I'll remember you in my prayers and wish you a speedy recovery!

90% Human Again

Wednesday, November 07, 2012

Today is a much better day with hardly any pain or soreness.

I was out all day yesterday without problems. I attended a meeting yesterday morning, did some errands, and voted. Spent the afternoon with my oldest daughter going to several casinos that we got free play at---she drove.

I was a little weak to start with since I hadn't been out since last Thursday evening but gained strength as the day wore on. It felt so good to get outside again.

Now I have a load of laundry ready to hang out and then want to put away the Halloween decorations.

A big thanks for all the well wishes.........Elsie

Doesn't the fresh air feel great? I walked outside today instead of going to the gym. I felt really refreshed.

A Day In Bed

Sunday, November 04, 2012

Saturday, I was very very sick. It started with chills Friday and progressed to some type of intestinal tract problem or bug by Saturday.

I had severe pain all across my abdominal area that came in wave after wave (very similar to labor contractions) that almost put me in tears. I didn't eat or drink anything for over 24 hours due to feeling like my stomach would revolt. It did one time causing more pain.

This felt like maybe the beginning of a blockage.

Today I am so much better with very little residual pain, mostly soreness from all the pain yesterday.

I attempted to drink a cup of peppermint tea but after consuming half a cup, my stomach started to revolt so i stopped. So far it had stayed down. I did get half a can of nutritional drink down yesterday.

The up side is that this morning I was down 6 pounds.....now if only I can keep it off...lol

I sure hope no one gets this bug as it is so painful.

ewww. doesn't sound like fun. But I find olive oil works great for helping with blockages - it's not addictive, it doesn't have effects that "wear out" the way herbs like senna do. I will rub it on my abdomen and backsides as well, as it passes through skin and helps soften up the blockages.. It's real easy for me to forget to drink all my water in the winter when it's dry!! I had a bit of that going this past week although the symptoms didn't manifest quite the way you did..

Hope you get to feeling better soon!!

Even with a 6-pound loss, it wouldn't be worth the pain. I sure hope you're better soon.

Hang in there! If it truly does not get better soon, go see the doc. One time when I was a teenager I got really sick too. My mom was away, so when I didn't feel like eating nobody really noticed that I wasn't eating. I went about 5 days with only water and huddling in bed. I lost about 10 lbs. Good news was it did succeed in putting a hold on a ravenous appetite and I was able to use that to my advantage and subsequently to continue to lose a lot of weight back then. It changed my set point. Try to see if this might work for you for a least awhile. Don't expect it to last forever, just use it while you can.

    Oh my, Saintbernard6,

You have been through the ringer. I hope you feel better today. My husband was feeling poorly too a few days ago, but nothing so severe as what you describe here.
Glad you're trying to get good nutrition in spite of it all.

lots of prayers and good healing thoughts are coming your way,
