Three Steps to Defeating Temptation

Tuesday, November 29, 2011

Use these practical tips to resist overindulging this holiday season.

Three Steps to Defeating Temptation

ractical tips and Bible verses to help you resist overindulging this holiday season.
By Mary Lou Carney, Chesterton, Indiana
The Christmas season is in full swing, bringing fun times with family and friends as well as opportunities to express and deepen your faith. But along with all that joy and wonder comes something else: temptation. It’s oh-so-easy to eat too much, spend too much and overwhelm yourself with to-do lists a mile long.
Of course, temptation doesn’t just show up around holiday time. It’s with you every day—in ways both subtle and overt. Satan, whom the Bible calls “the tempter”(Matthew 4:3), is an expert at creating custom-made temptations for each of us. But don’t despair! God has given you an “escape hatch” as unique as every temptation. “God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted,he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it” (1 Corinthians 10:13).
Want to defeat your temptations? This three-step strategy can help:
1. Know your dangers.
Think about your own temptations. Where are you tempted? When? With whom? Why? The more you understand the situations that cause you to fall, the easier it is to work around them. “A prudent man sees danger and takes refuge, but the simple keep going and suffer for it” (Proverbs 22:3).
2. Pray.
Even if you can’tsee a way to resist temptation, God can. Jesus was “tempted in every way, just as we are — yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). What better resource is there than the One who overcame temptation? Ask him to show you the path around your weaknesses.
3. Plan your detour.
Find a replacement thought pattern. Instead of thinking about buying yet another Christmas present for your children or spouse, focus on how you can spend that money on the poor. Yearning for chocolate cake? Imagine the taste of a gorgeous, crisp, colorful apple instead. Direct your attention to that uplifting book on your nightstand instead of to surfing the Internet. Choose where your treasure is, then focus on it. And “there your heart will be also” (Matthew 6:21).
Standing firm when you feel yourself slipping into behaviors that are less-than-pleasing to Jesus is a sure-fire way to draw closer to him. And what better time that Christmas to do that!

Working on December Goals

Friday, November 25, 2011

This plate is to remind me of the new my plate taking the place of the food pyramid. I really do like the my plate format and do follow it. I eat a lot of veggies so that isn't hard for me. I just eat too much of them.

For December, I am making 3 simple goals:

1. maintain my weight

2. do the WATP dvd 5 of 7 days

3. keep my spending under control

I say maintain rather than lose because this is such a hard month and I haven't progressed at all during the past 3 months. Since my B 12 level has improved my energy level is slowly getting back to normal. With the shorter days and longer nights, my SADS will kick in big time and my motivation will fall out the bottom. So if I maintain, I will be doing better than previous years when I've gained up to 10 pounds during the holidays.

Sounds like a plan to me Elise, I also like the plate idea, better than the pyramid. I hope you achieve all your goals and that you had a great thanksgiving.

An OK week

Sunday, November 20, 2011

This past 2 weeks have been on the run with each day packed full. Today I got a day of rest and restoration.

Weigh in at TOPS last Thursday showed a 4/ths pound gain. I'm ok with that as I had on heavier clothes than before.

I haven't progressed toward my goals at all due to not really having a lot of time and losing my effort. My head knows what to do but my heart doesn't follow. It has been like this for the whole year. I have not gotten any closer to losing this weight than I was a year ago, In face, I think I may weigh a pound more than a year ago.

Although, I haven't gotten even close to my goal, I've had a very fun year except for when the fatigue set in and I could barely get the gumption to move.

I am planning on a better more successful time for the next year. I am working on getting my health and finances under control. I have too much debt at the moment. I'm not swamped just a little overextended. I do have sufficient income to pay all my bills each month but don't have any savings which worries me. One more year or less and several bills will be paid so it isn't a real dark road.

This isn't meant to be a gloom and doom report just letting me know where I'm at now.

Blessings to all.....and a Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours...

November Goals

Saturday, November 12, 2011

UMMMMMMMMM.......Two weeks into November and I haven't posted any goals......

Now it's time to be more specific...

1. weight...247 by November 30

2. follow exercise regime 5 of 7 days each week

3. put out bird feeders and keep them filled

4. keep suet cakes up for the birds

5. time with family and friends

this will point me toward my next goal of 240 Christmas

REMEMBER: It's not so much what we eat between Christmas and New Years but what we eat between New Years and Christmas the side tracks us and sabotages our goals!!
