Still Swinging.....

Saturday, February 04, 2012

So....although my friend Mal would probably kill me, I was back at the gym today despite some continued twinges. And OMG it felt SO good to get these old legs pumping again!! I did a flats set followed by a hills set! It was awesome!!

So today was the 20th anniversary of me starting out in my profession. AND it was the first day of Saturday's for me this season. So this is how my day goes on Saturday's....colleague picks me up at 6:20am, at the office by 6:30. Stuff around with paperwork til the gym opens at 9. Workout for an hour or so -- cardio -- then back to the office. Grab post workout half bagel with scallion cream cheese. Shuffle papers for another little bit and out the door by noon. Now I know this doesn't sound like I get much done, and truth be told I don't BUT it does get me to the gym each Saturday AND I get a bunch of the paper detritus cleaned off my desk -- all the stuff that needs to get dealt with but never seems to be during the week. Then it's food shopping, some cleaning at the apt, a nap, cook dinner -- pasta with chicken and peas tonight -- then relax or do some more real work and off to bed. Gee I live such a wildly exciting life!! LOL Oh well! At least I got a great bike ride in and still met this weeks calorie burn!

Tory - I work every Saturday for usually 2-3 hours as well - with noone around, it is a huge advantage and always sets up the next week up so much better - its my head start on everyone else

Way to go with the calorie goals this week - nice job

Good on you....coming in on Saturday's is one sure fire way to keep those papers from procreating on your desk on the weekends!

Nicely done with the cardio....ease into it as your back loosens up

So....when I woke up this morning I got to thinking how every new day is filled with an infinite array of possibilies. Every day from the moment you open your eyes we're faced with choices....will I curse out the alarm clock or get up gracefully without a winge? What will I have for breakfast? Do I turn right or left to get lunch today? What will I do first when i get to the office? When will I hit the gym? And the choices just go on and on.

So I was pondering all these possibilities this morning, as I said. (I think WAY too much at 5:30am!) And it got me really excited that today could bring something new and exciting my way. Some new challenge or some new opportunity. It got me really excited. Don't know why...just did.

Now it's the end of the day and I'd have to say that on the whole it was a pretty good one. Got a LOT done today at work. Arranged to go out for drinks with a new guy next week (still sorting details on when so stay tuned). Did not go to the gym because I tweeked my back this morning and chose to listen to Starla's advice about not pushing too hard.

So now I'm looking forward to what Friday will bring as I hang with some friends online and listen to some great tunes!

Agreed possibilities each day - while I tend to think that on the East coast your daily possibilities probably have the chance to be far more exciting than those in the MidWest, still lots of choices to be made, choices on how I will deal with people, and whom I may form a better relation with, etc

great post - and best of luck when you have drinks - always exciting meeting new people isn't it

Have a great Friday Tory! emoticon

Well there you go.....wake up that way as often as you can!! Here's a few crazy lines a friend of mine posted...use some of these in the morning (I have to wait till my 3d cup of Joe to get going.....but once I out!)

Love your enemies in case your friends turn out to be jerks
Brainwash yourself before someone nasty beats you to it
Confess big secrets to people who aren't very interested
Change your name every day for a thousand days
Exaggerate your flaws till they turn into virtues
Brag about what you can't do and don't have
Make fun of people who make fun of people
Simulate global warming into your pants
Stage a slow-motion water balloon fight
Pretend your wounds are exotic tattoos
Sing anarchist lullabies to lesbian trees
Commit a crime that breaks no laws

New Month.....

Wednesday, February 01, 2012

WOW! Can't believe it's been almost a week since I last blogged. So much has happened. First I put my back out. This is what I get for working from home one day and trying to sneak in a nap! It was like the work gods put a curse on me. So that pretty much buggered my plans for the weekend. I DID go shopping for a new sofa (not very successfully). I think I need GetStrongerrr's SWMBO to come along with me. That woman is a demon in a furniture shop by all accounts. I need a demon. I went out looking for a couch BUT I did find two night tables and a potential new media center. Both of which items I could really use!! So it wasn't a total loss. LOL

Then Sunday my friend with PTSD hit a crisis. I was on edge for a few days about that and really trying to stay accessable to her if she wanted to talk. So didn't get to being my Sparky best. She's doing better the last couple days. It's going to be a long road she has to travel, but I think she's found the right people to help her on her journey. So please....hold your thumbs for her and send her some good thoughts. She can use the strength right about now.

BUT except for the couple days where my back was buggered AGAIN....I think January ended off pretty strong. Where I fell down mostly was in the squats-pushups-crunches triumverate. Apparently after the back went the first time I didn't get back into the swing of things. Which in retrospect is probably for the best as a week later the back was gone again. So in February I will be looking to redouble my efforts in this arena. And start kicking some major butt here!!

The biking running has been going really well. I'm up to about 20miles on the bike pretty regular now. As for the running, I'm repeating week 3 due to aforementioned back issues. Just wasn't feeling quite ready yet to going to week 4. And that's OK cause this ain't a speed record. It's about progress!

Food wise I've been really good, even if the scale isn't appreciating my efforts here. Now this is NOT to say that there isn't room for improvement. There is. For example....since I'll now be taking at least two meals in the office daily (lunch and dinner) I've started getting a nice salad at the local shop. That and a 1/2 sandwich from pret are my post-workout lunch. All in it's a bit over 400 cals. And that's about what I need after all that biking. So this plan is going to up my fruit/veg numbers a LOT. Then for dinner I've been bringing the meal I cooked on Sunday. Makes for a kind of boring...well predictable ... selection of choices for the week, but this time of year, with my schedule....the simplicity of grabbing a pre-packed meal from the fridge greatly out weighs variety! Also getting my daily yogurt....gotta have my post-breakfast breakfast. LOL And of course a bit of protein before the gym! So I've been staying withing my ranges and the damned scale has to give at some point!! Guaranteed I'm more stubborn than it is!!

On the water front...I'm really good during the week but haven't quite succeeded at the weekend water allotment. I'll get there...just haven't consistently quite yet.

Sleep....well sleep hasn't come so well this last week as I've been so stressed with worry about my friend, BUT I am going to try to get at least an extra hour each night. I figure I can do that if I pick up 1/2 hour on each side. Not always the easiest to accomplish but I'll give it a go!

Relaxation....not a lot, unfortunately! BUT I'm going to try to spend at least 15 mins a day that is just mine. Whether it's reading a book or listening to some quiet music (not my running mix) or just sitting and contemplating my navel. That's the goal for February.

So that's the plan in broad strokes. I know I have to catch up my cross-country journey. I'll do that this weekend. Keep Sparking along my friends!

I have the same water problem. I drink loads at work on the weekends, but I get busy during the week and forget. :( I'm just trying to make sure I have a bottle with me constantly.

Good luck with the sleep and relaxation. And I wish your back would give you a break already! Geesh!!!

Mmmm, maybe I should join you on week three. I've done almost NOTHING for months now. I LOVE exercise, but I love sleep more now that I'm never home. I don't think I could jog 3 miles anymore, but I'm pretty sure I could attempt week three and work my way back up there. Take care of that back.

    Wonderful plan....persistence is the key.

Hmmm, a part time job for SWMBO in the lucrative home decorating industry? Perhaps a chance for her own TV show "Trading Spaces: New York Edition". I could retire and she could keep me living in the manner I'm accustomed too.....

Sorry about your friend, but you're right, there will be many ups and downs over time, some of them deep

Stick to your plan....strengthen that back up!

you're back may keep going out because it needs time to heal. Just because it doesn't *hurt* doesn't mean its healed. You may need to take a couple of weeks of no strain on your back. Nothing at all would probably be best - but not realistic.
Also - you sit a lot? you sit right?
Sounds like you're really going gungho on this! way to go. it's inspiring!

Two Minutes....

Thursday, January 26, 2012

Two minutes....

120 seconds....

1/30th of an hour......

It doesn't matter how you call it. It's all just 2 minutes. In theory, those two minutes pass at the same rate every time. I say theory because as we all know time is NOT in fact always the same! It flows like water in a river! And today my two mins of running in my training program flowed like water in a dammed river!

OMG those were some painful minutes today! Not sure why I battled today. Perhaps because I was already fairly worn down by the day by the time I hit the gym at 4PM. Perhaps I was just off my stride. I don't know. What I do know is that those were bloody LONG 2 minutes! I tried to rationalize and tell myself that each of the 2 min bits were the same as the other ones. Rationale thinking was just not working for me.

BUT I will not give up and DID NOT give up!!! NO EXCUSES! I finished my run. Felt pretty good about it overall despite the wingeing!. Did another 30 mins on the bike. Total biking miles for the month to date.....214.08! Trying to figure out where to set my goal for Feb. Blew past the goal for this month by 61 miles so far (and 8/100's!)!!

Welp that's about it today. Gotta wait to find outh what tomorrow brings!

Sounds like you did great and hung tough! There are good days and bad days working out. On those bad days, just slow down the pace like your body is telling you it wants to.

214 miles is pretty darn good!
