Ups and Downs

Seems like everytime I start having some success, I sabotage myself. Today was one of those days. The difference is that I'm not going to let it derail me, Today is past (or will be in a few hours) and tomorrow is another day and another start.

The days ups....I went to the gym and biked 9.52 miles in 40mins (my best distance since returning to regular exercise) emoticon I will do my Bootcamp challeng video as soon as I finish this blog. I drank 3L of water (about 12 glasses).

The downs....I went over my cals for the first time this year. I blew a gasket when my boss dumped more non-chargeable crap on me to do (essenstially she now has me doing her job, without her pay). It's going to snow 12" tonight.

I realize that none of these things are earth-shattering, and I'm disappointed inmyself for not following my nutrition plan, but I also know that it's not the end of the world and that it's just one day in the long healthy life that I have to live. I guess the plus side is that I went over with healthy snacks and not just any crap.

So that's the day and tomorrow will be another -- another chance to get it right!!


Lessons (Re)Learned from Week 1

First off, I like to work out! I like the feeling when I'm done exercising. That feeling of accomplishment, exhilaration andd exhaustion. Why do I so willingly trade this awesome feeling for other people's needs? Like today, I chose to finish certain work rather than go bike at the gym. I don't feel better for having sacrificed my ride for the work. I could have done both if I'd stayed later at work. But I gave u the gym to make sure it got done. On the plus side I did do the Day 7 Week 1 Bootcamp video and walked 2 miles. So I did get some exercise. Just not that break a sweat, peddle til your legs are all wobbly kind of exercise.

As for food and nutrition....There's a few issues here. First off I can't say I've felt deprived at all this week. I've eaten food I like, the same food I ate before SP, even included a few things I don't eat regularly but still enjoy. So no feeling of loss or depreivation in the food area. What I DID rediscover is that if I don't lay out at least a base plan in the morning, then I'm more likely to be running low on calories by the time dinner rolls around. I also learned that I need to eat about an hour before I work out otherwise I get to feeling a bit dizzy by the end. Piece of fruit or a granola bar seems to help.

Although I am a Diet Coke addict, and refuse to every fully give up this refreshing, delightful beverage, I did drink at least 2 liters of water a day. WOOHOO! This is HUGE for me. But I did it and didn't completely hate it. Sorry but that's the best I can do at the moment.

emoticon Plan for Week 2: Complete Week 2 of the Bootcamp Challenge, Complete Week 2 of the 200 Squats and 100 Pushups Programs, Bike a minimum of 30 mins a day 5 times.

emoticon Plan for Week 2: Plan out each day's meals the night before, then do shopping as necessary on the way home from work. Brown bag lunch to lunch each day. Only eat what I bring to work, no side purchases!

emoticon Plan for Week 2: Drink 2 liters of water a day at work and at least .5 liters after work. On weekends, drink 2.5 liters of water.

    Hi Safaribabe,

I don't have alot of time to do alot of things available for me on sp, but I have learned ALOT about calories. Being a low carber for 15 years, I am realizing that I miss real food! I am doing the same thing you are - bringing my lunch everyday with snacks. I did not bring enough today, and I had to eat a little before I worked out too. You are doing really awesome working out! I am not pushing myself, but then again I am because I haven't worked out everyday in a long time. My sister signed up for this too. Good luck to you this week!

    Wow, you have gained more insight from your first week back to it than I have. I actually have done really well with putting myself first this time around - that is one thing I have always been bad about and the main reason why I am in the condition that I am in right now. I always put off what I need to do for myself so that I can do for others. Well NOT this time!

Anyway, it sounds like you are definitely on the right track and keep up the good work and the focus! If you maintain it, you will achieve great things! emoticon

Awesome 1st Day Back to the Gym

It's been ages since I've been to the gym. But today I determined to start back. Well, actually yesterday I did but them i forgot my gym lock. Usually it's the sports bra I forget or event he sneakers, but this time it was the lock. Anyway, I made it today and had an awesome 8 mile ride. Time was I'd ride up to about 20miles a day, but I was probably more chuffed by these 8 miles than I was by the 20 becuase it came as a complete surprise that I would last that long. I programed the bike for 30 mins pluss a 5 min cooldown, but I was fully prepared to accept 20 mins if that's as far as I got. But nope I made it the whole 35 mins and probably could have gone a few more but didn't want to completely overdo. It's amazing how the first few minutes are the hardest but once you get going, you just keep going til before you know it the time is up.

Today I also wore a pedometer to work. I tracked the amount of walking I do in a regular day and that came out to about 3.6 miles! WOOT! Actually that wasn't a wholly normal day because I knew that I needed to stop at the market on the way home. I wanted to get some light salad dressing that I could take to work with me and some chicken for dinner. I decided to take the bus home and rather than gettin off at the stop closest to my apartment and going to the market there. I got off at the stop before and ewnt to the market a block in the opposite direction from my place then walked home (about .5 miles). So I guess my regular day is closer to 3 miles. (Anyone have any idea how many steps that is? My Pedometer only tracks miles and km.)

Came home and cooked a nice dinner -- grilled chicken, baked sweet potato and peas. I discovered that sweet potatos really do not need to be swinning in butter to taste great! That's a big one for me. The rest of the night I did Day 5 of the 2 Day Bootcamp Challenge.

Tomorrow I have Squats and Pushups, another ride and Day 6. Thankfully, due to the impending snowstorm, my date was postponed so I don't have to do everything at 5AM. While I am an early riser I like my morning routine of meal planning, news, shower and caffeine! Exercise videos do NOT figure into the serenity I try to embrace in the morning. At least not yet it doesn't!

I just read that on the internet. I have been curious myself. I drive all day, and probably walk a total of one mile - THAT will change!

Plan B

So today was supposed to be my first day back to the gym. Of course the Powers That Be had other plans. And they made me leave my lock at home! I managed to come up with an alternative plan however, which involved me walking home from work (1.57 miles) I also did Day 2 of my 6 week Squats and Pushups programs. So I'm very chuffed about that I finished off the night with Day 4 of the 28-Day Bootcamp Challenge and a nice healthy meal full of fresh veggies when what I really wanted was a bag of chips!

All in I'd say that despite the setback at the gym it was a pretty good day. Now I'm wholly done in and am going to head to bed!

And yes, I've already put the lock in my bag for tomorrow!! emoticon

    HAH! I knew it! And honestly.....1.57 miles home from YOUR office is 2 gym workouts! That cabbie/traffic obstacle course is a workout in and of itself. LOL emoticon

Ups, Downs and a Bit of a Rant

I'm not sure why I've been in a perpetual state of Blah today. Maybe it's because I have to go back to work tomorrow. Maybe it's because I didn't get half what I wanted to get done this long weekend done. Maybe it's because my BF is making me nuts. I don't know but I've really had a hard time working up much of a fig about anything.

That said on the plus side, I made a ymmy omelet for lunch with fresh spinach and scallions. Tonight I'm having pasta with spinach, peas and fresh tomatoes, olive oil and garlic. The one thing I love about SP is that you aren't bound by any dietary restrictions. You can pretty much eat what ever you want as long as you stay within the range. This is a good thing!

Also on the plus side I went to the market and got the fixings for tomorrow's lunch -- brown bag time! And then went to Bed Bath & Beyond to get some new storage jars as the seals on all my old ones had pretty much gone to seed. I did drink all my water today, or will have done as soon as I finish this liter and I did do Day 3 of the 28-Day Bootcamp workout. So that's good too.

Tomorrow will be my first day back to the gym in a dog's age. I've determined that I'll do my strength work at home. Used the SP Workout generator for some of it and the rest is Day 2 of the Squats and ushup Programs. Then at the gym I'll start riding the bike. I used to love doing that. Hopefully, my butt won't hurt as much this time around!! Goal for tomorrow is 20mins on the bike. So tonight I'll pack my bag. I usually forget something...sports bra, socks, something. Hopefully this way if I DO forget anything I'll remember it before I leave in the morning.

That's about it for tonight About time to get dinner going.

Thanks for checking up on me. I am slowly sliding into the routine. Little things every day. I'm working my way up to being a Spark fanatic again. You've inspired me to really start bootcamp. I'll post my daily progress; I know I have to be accountable.

Hope you enjoy the time at the gym tomorrow! I'll be getting on a bike as first time on a spin bike. I'm a bit nervous, but looking forward to it! Then off for a swim. I can't wait!
